How exactly do sex scenes enrich movies?
Whenever people talk about the greatest scenes in movies, they talk about things like dialogue scenes, action scenes or just scenes with amazing cinematography.
Nobody thinks about sex scenes when they think about what makes a great movie actually great.
If the most popular thing about a movie is a sex scene, it's always some kind of a perverted NC-17 or X-rated movie that only cares about eliciting controversy rather than any actual cinematic qualities.
So once again, how do sex scenes improve movies?
How would a great film be worse if a sex scene in it was either removed or changed to some implied cutaway shot?

It’s smut. There is no argument against this.

City Lights is one of the greatest romantic comedies ever made, and yet it doesn't even feature the main couple doing an on-screen kiss. The most romantic moment happens at the end and it's just the two of them smiling at each other. And yet it's still one of the greatest moments in romance in cinema.
I often think about City Lights and how great it is, and I compare it to later "great" romance movies with lots of explicit smutty sex scenes.

Sex is a cheap, fast way to draw the audience in emotionally. To inform them of the relationship without having to try and build it up in different ways. Kind of like horror movies use a "last girl" to greater build tension and fear as we can more easily empathize with the weaker sex when she's forced to fight back.

I always look for pads in sex scenes and nude scenes. Sydney Sweeney has a pad over her asshole when she's getting fucked doggy style in euphoria. The redhead from GOT had a pad on when she took her shirt off. You could see it clearly. I'm really interested in pads.

The audience is too retarded to understand that two characters had sex without either showing a sex scene or explicitly stating "they had sex"
Watch a sitcom and you'll see that the writers constantly go with option 2 because of standards and practices.
