The real point all the Sith really failed on, including Bane, is having faith in their apprentices. They always decide they hate them/resent them and want to kill them, then get a new apprentice. To be that deep into the dark side, you can't genuinely have the trust and compassion necessary to effectively train another. It'd only really be possible if you spent as little time with them as possible: just pop in, leave them an enigma or task, and let them do it.
