Being a mediaeval peasant was... LE SUFF-
>>
>>218211046
That’s not a peasant.
>>
>>218211068
He was a peasant anon, that's called social mobility

>dies of extremely minor, preventable infection
>>
I think it’s weird that Europe never has slaves during their medieval period. It’s kind of backwards really.
>>
>>218211114
slavery was a myth designed to uphold white """superiority"""
>>
>>218211114
Lots of places had a special type of farmer that wasn't allowed to leave, change jobs or decide things about the farm without permission.
>>
>>218211184
jannies are the modern equivalent of this btw
>>
Ah yes, the typical late-10th century queen-sized box spring bed with headboard and several fluffy pillows, mammoth-sized pelt blanket, as well as two candles left on (capable of illuminating an entire room).
>>
>>218211114
during the High Middle Age slavery declined and mostly replaced by serfdom, but some places had continuous slavery throughout the middle ages and into the Renaissance, like what's known today as Italy and of course the Vikings.
>>
>>218211362
A peasant would probably have a large mattress but it would be gross since the entire family would sleep on it.
>>
>>218211046
they got like four months off a year and quit when the sun went down, peasants had a better work-life balance than the modern wageslave
>>
>>218211400
They grew crops almost all year round. Also they still had to do various farm chores even when they weren’t growing/harvesting anything.

Better to sleep like this than have your balls filled with microplastics
>>
Lack of antibiotics and painkillers made life terrible back then. I don’t see the appeal.
>>
>>218211114
you mean serfs?
>>
>>218211378

The Byzantine-Roman Empire's slave population declined while their Muslim Enemies, the Muslim Arabs and Persians and the Muslim Seljuk/Oghuz and Ottoman Turks were Empires that ran on slave economies and was driven by Holy War/Jihad.

>the entire family slept in one mattress
how did they have so many kids back then?
>>
I would have died at age 12 from appendicitis, so I'll settle with being alive in a relatively soul destroying era considering the alternative.

When was the last time you needed to take antibiotics not to die?
>>
>>218211110
Go on then. Cure an infected wound in the wild with no modern medicine if you're so great.
>>
>>218211184
Except permission was almost always given, and guaranteed if you were going on pilgrimage. Any motherfucker could nope out at any time by joining a monastery or crusade and your lord couldn't do shit about it.

After eating your mom's rancid pussy.
>>
>>218211519
You learned of country matters early. Likely the large main room would be partitioned with sheets, hay bales, etc for privacy so mom and dad could fuck while the kids stayed on the other side of the room in their own partition.
>>
>>218211046
Medieval peasants didn't have antibiotics in their food or the equivalent of a table spoon in micro plastics in their brain and testicles, how backwards and illiberal.
>>
>>218211114
Slavic states east of the Elbe ran on the slave trade in the very early middle ages.
But it is impressive how quickly it was done away with.
>>
>>218211423
They would have had to do that anyway.
>>
>>218211490
Serfs aren't slaves.
And 19th Century Russian Serfs weren't really the same thing as Medieval Serfs.
>>
>>218211046
No era where you could go to war and kill Muslims was suffering.

key word "almost" as in they got winters off
>>
When will we get a show about the Frisian Peasant Republic?
>>
>>218211114
Serfdom was almost literally the same thing, the only difference really was whether or not you were a foreigner. Either way, you were still property.
Europeans brag about not having slavery, but the only reason is because their own countrymen lived in such abject poverty and servitude that they didn't need slaves.
>>
>>218211911
>Serfdom was almost literally the same thing.
Almost only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.

Point is, whatever their differences, they filled the same societal role.
You do not need slaves when your own poors are thoroughly subjugated. Yeah, serfdom was better. Still though, yeah, the only reason Europe phased out slavery is because they didn't need it when they had serfs.
Potato potato.

99% of everyone was impoverished (by today's standard) before industrialization. The middle class is a modern invention.

>Serfdom was almost literally the same thing
No it was not. Serfdom was essentially just land renting. Serfs owed their lords a certain quota of goods, everything they produced beyond that was theirs. They had rights and legal protections and couldn't be sold or traded, and had plenty of leisure time including lots of holidays where they legally couldn't be made to work.
Your idea of what the middle ages was like largely comes from Monty Python and the Holy Grail

>>218211110
Stop raping kids
>>
>>218213245
Oh, piss off. You and I both know that serfdom was an institution for centuries, and it spanned several different countries and cultures.
You're fucking delusional if you're trying to imply those rights were in any way consistent or universal.
And my point is, again, the serfdom WAS better than slavery, but at the same time, the institution of serfdom WAS also why they didn't need slavery. You don't need slaves when you have serfs. That's just a fact.
I can tell you're a European just over how you're getting all pompous about how you didn't actually hellmax your poors as much as you could have. Serfdom was still amoral and disgusting, by the way.

It is often difficult to make generalizations even about the same region at the same time in history. There were even instances where a church holding a 5 minute walk away from a secular fief had incredibly different lifestyles.
"Serfdom was" already makes you out to be a bullshitter when it is not immediately followed by a geographical and chronological (and possibly, ecclesiastical or secular) qualifier. One cannot meaningfully make very many non-trivial observations about such a diverse, long-lasting system.

Under slavery, unlanded common men could generate capital and a fighting force without employing a skill or providing a material useful to their landed superiors. As feudalism became more complex, this had to be removed in order to protect the entrenched aristocracy. Peasants, no matter how rich they could become through trade and craft, couldn't keep serfs, even if they were allowed to lease land for enterprise.
