I just marathoned Eyes Wide Shut on TUBi before they took it off the platform. Never seen it before, but over the years all I've ever heard was that it was a disappointing and incomplete mess, and that Kubrick hated working with Tom. What on earth were those people talking about? This is pure kino. You can tell where Cruise really struggled with the part, but aside from that it was all picture perfect. This movie is more relevant now than ever. What do you think about it? Do you think it will ever get "recut?"
>>218216000>You can tell where Cruise really struggled with the part?
>>218216040You couldn't tell he was really uncomfortable and stressed from so many takes?
https://i.imgur.com/4gZtIqj.mp4Yeah it's good
An all-star cast to say the least.
>>218216190IF it was the intention of Kubrick to have this scene portray the stealth abandonment of Helena by Bill and Alice to cult henchmen, then it's just bad storytelling and bad character work. For all their flaws, Bill and Alice are not complete sociopaths and likely care very much about Helena outside the events in the film. How could they nonchalantly just wave Helena away for the rest of their lives without even a second glance and immediately discuss their relationship problems?
>>218216000You cant marathon a movie
>>218216593welcome to 4chan, home of the tried and tested noob baits.
>>218216593you can if you have adhd
>>218216578I'm OP, I actually agree here. When I heard this initially I was almost preparing myself for that moment at the end. When I saw it my reaction was that it didn't look like she was leaving. I played it over and over, and it is odd that she pats her head like she's saying goodbye, but otherwise your point is exactly how I feel. If that's the canon ending then it betrays the good Doctor and Alice's devotion to their marriage.
This is my new favorite Christmas Movie.
>>218216654The most that can be said for this theory is that Helena gives and odd final look ito Alice in that sequence, something that must have been intentional from the director since he's dealing with a child actor that follows his instructions very closely. But my interpretation of that is more that Kubrick wanted to give the Helena charcter a proper exit from the stage, and the look ior attitude of the child is meant to convey that as a very young child, she senses that something is off between her parents in this moment but she obviously isn\t privy to the crisis they are going through and just leaves confused and sad to wander into the store.
>>218216000It's a rock solid movie for sure. I could never figure out why people didn't like it at the time. It's not my favorite of his, but enjoyable to watch every so often.
>>218216915I think this scene has another connotation that I felt at the time of watching it but seeing the red bubble gun salesman and the master of ceremonies reminds me that the system is designed to get them programmed while they're young. That she isn't yet involved with shady sexy societies, but one day she may well be the fresh meat that they prey upon. It felt inevitable, but not transpiring in that scene.
>>218216950Cheers. The piano usage was on fucking point. I really think it's a beautiful film. Lovingly crafted is the term I'd use.
>>218217007>Le spooky black and white photo with devil imagery Does Kubrick do this in all his films?
>>218216190these two scenes are a stupid comparison. Having the two men in suits be background characters throughout the film is enough of a clue they are being watched and maybe grooming helena. But she's not leaving with them at that stage. Its just foreshadowing that its likely going to happen
>>218217096it's a publicity still. i don't see any devil imagery in there, unless you mean the hunched posture and intent look.
>>218216131You're retarded.
>>218217282>Having the two men in suits be background characters throughout the film is enough of a clue they are being watchedOr maybe it's just a basic fact of filmmaking that there was only a limited pool of people available for background extra work for the duration of filming and Kubrick reused some of them in different scenes without intending audiences to comb through the frames with a magnifyer glass to identify potential spies stalking Bill and Helena through a crowd.
>>218216040Tom Cruise is pretty bad at acting angery because his response to angery situations is to be cuntish, and that's not manly. So Kubrick had to coax more out of him. >>218216978That's why they focus on the Barbie at the end, I think.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zE_2sVt31kTrying to do a debriefing, and getting some of the facts straight around the production of the film. I found this video and it seems to have scratched that itch.
>>218217348uh oh i just nooticed
>>218216190>>218216578I dont think it really portrays it in the film. It probably comes from reports saying that was the intention of the last scene but it was cut so people infer too much from the actual film
>>218217577this nigga's almonds getting activated
>>218217290>i don't see any devil imagery in there,Hope this helps
>>218217639pistachios = perambulating
>>218216623I do, in fact. That's what allows me to enjoy Kubrick even more, I reckon. Attention to detail, repeating patterns, metaphor.
>>218217604Avery was just regurgitating the original rumors and unhinged interpretations on the Rigan podcast last year, he didn't bring anything new to the table, if anything he brought more bullshit than clarity or facts. His other big claim was that he had a copy of the shooting script with narration, and that was his main evidence for his belief that things had been cut from the movie, but he wasn't even aware of the fact that the script had been published with this narration (which only provides minor psychological insights) at the time of EWS's release and had been widely available on the net the whole time.http://www.visual-memory.co.uk/amk/doc/0085.html

>>218217777Checked. This honestly is interesting and I remember seeing an interview with the guy that says he's going to go through with recutting the film one day with the narration. I'm not sure if that would really add anything to the movie, and his opinion that "the movie hangs on things uncomfortably long because it was shot for narration" doesn't add up with me. The movie was precisely paced, there wasn't a whole lot of filler and yet they took their time with the build up of drama and suspense. Doesn't really need a VO, imo. >>218216307What did she mean by this?
>>218217348I don't make much of the coincidence of the name of the reporter (Kubrick hired a real NY reporter to wrtie copy for the in-movie newspaper, let him use his name on the byline, later on he got assigned to the Epstein story in real life) but I do believe it provides a clue as to the background of Red Cloak (played by Leon Vitali), I do believe this is Kubrick throwing the freeze-framers a bonus clue here. (this was spotted by Rob Ager as far as I know)
>>218217907Boffo. Can never unsee.
>>218218233checked and agreed as well
>>218218263Interesting. Thanks for the information
by the way, here's an actual scene from the screenplay not in the film.

>>218218493if that's jay dyer behind the mask, i just find his tone of speech unbearable for more than 5 minutes. the little i watched, i got the sense he loves to hear himself talk and inject his worldview into his analysis more than shed proper light on them. in other words, use the movie as a springboard to launch into his own lectures and digressions.
>>218217647BRAVO VINCE
>>218216578I never heard this idea that the kid was given away before, certainly didn' looked like that to me, I even rewatched the end, there's no emotional weight whatsoever that would associate to it in that scene just kidman dealing with his betrayal

>>218216000>What do you think about it? It's his best work.>Do you think it will ever get "recut?"No need. It's a film about jealousy and it says everything it needs to say. People get distracted by the illuminati/conspiracy stuff in it but it's really only there to drive the emotional journey of the characters. It's not a film about exposing the existence of elite sex cults - if anything Kubrick presents that stuff in a very dry, matter-of-fact way as if to say "Yep, shit like this actualy exists, but a bunch of bored rich people in a fruity little club having fruity little wife-swapping sex parties in fancy dress costumes isn't really very interesting - in fact most of these people are fucking morons."What interested Kubrick was exploring how a loving husband/father deals with discovering that his lovely wife and mother of his child is potentially a massive shameless whore capable of brutally cucking him for no particularly good reason at any given moment and that if he's honest with himself, he's every bit as capable of behaving the same way if not far, far worse. >This movie is more relevant now than ever. Yeah especially with more and more Epstein stuff coming to light. It seems when all restraints and moral safeguards are removed from the equation that human sexual depravity can reach extremes that are almost comical, but mostly just sad and deeply depressing.
>>218216578Its just schizo fanfiction. Its a sex movie. Its a beuatiful big budget production of a red shoe diaries type story. The occult stuff is there as the setting and background but there isnt some secret hidden in the movie.
