He's chubby, that's it. He's hard working, talented, smart enough to keep outwitting his insane psychopathic bosses, has his shit together, a decent house, good things, good friends. It's never been suggested he's a "schlubby loser" at all.

Theres an episode where drew dies but there's a mix up in heaven so instead of going to the afterlife drew is reincarnated as his nephew. So drew is birthed by mimi and then breastfed by her, all the while he is fully conscious and basically in a "locked in" state screaming in protest in his mind. This is all well before the series gets really weird at the end when they kept trying to retool it to avoid being canceled. By the end drew is a broke lunch lady who confides in a magical negro bus driver, sweet dee from always sunny is the new mimi, and his love interest is a stripper he used to babysit.
