His existence was memoryholed
As he deserves. Conan won.
>>218224603He wasn't that good. He literally just copied Letterman's show and only beat him in the ratings after getting that English actor who got caught fucking a prostitute
Better monologue than conanBetter band than conanBetter segments than conanBetter guest interaction than conan
>>218224877His car channel is more successful than Conan's Tonight Show.
>>218224877Also Leno has never killed his party goers by not calling the police on someones son.
>>218224792i don't get why he gets the blame for Conan having shitty ratings
>>218224603Because he truly did phone it in for over 20 years doing The Tonight Show. No signature bits, a few memorable interviews (Hugh Grant after he got caught with a prositute and Kanye West after he interrupted Taylor Swift at the VMA's). Off the top of my head I can remember the signature bits and guests from Carson (Carnack The Magnificent, Rickles, Dangerfield), Letterman(Stupid Pet Tricks, Top 10, Remotes, Charles Grodin, Jay Leno ironically), Conan (Walker Texas Ranger Lever, Clutch Cargo, Norm, Kevin Nealon, Harlan Williams). Cannot say the same for Jay Leno. Doesn't help that his run on the Tonight Show is only very very partially archived, and what we have is low quality and usually not the full episode. Nobody was taping this shit ass show Leno was doing
>>218224955Apparently retards thought him having a show before Conan was somehow sucking viewership away. Or something.
>>218224877Letterman was better
>>218224961They didn't have to tape it. They watched it when it aired.
He's remembered for inspiring Gray Leno.
>>218224955>>218225016He moved him to after midnight when everybody’s asleep in bed and fucked him over.
>>218224877>Better monologue than conanunquestionably but Leno was a pro stand up and had a back pocket full of stale punchlines and OJ jokes >Better bandAbsofuckinglutely not. Max Weinberg 7 is better than corny ass Kevin Eubanks. Who wasn't even the first choice btw. Originally it was another black guy named Brandford Marseilles but he refused to laugh at Leno's shitty material and got replaced. >Better segments than conanAgain no. Jaywalking is corny boomer shit, same with Headlines. This motherfucker read newsprint typos for over 20 years and called it a signature bit.>Better guest interaction than conanLeno was the creepiest of the talk show creeps and it's confirmed that multiple female guest on Conan wanted to fuck him. Conan very well may have fucked prime Martha Stewart. It's no coincidence that whenever Leno is portrayed by another actor (Chris Elliot, Pam and Tommy, and that awful Late Shift HBO movie) he's played as a creep and a psycho
>>218225039Conan's ratings were shit at 11:30, anon. You do understand they did that as a response to his shitty numbers, right?
Careful, Icarus...
>>218225039>conan debuted to 9m viewers>in just one week he lost so much he was losing to letterman>this is leno's fault even though his show didn't even begin until SeptemberConan fags sure are good at revising history. Guess that's what they were doing instead of actually watching the show.
>>218224603I love the whole early 90s tonight show saga, just as fascinating as the 2010 conflict. So many funny moments and people involved>CBS execs tried to court Leno by buying him a vintage motorcycle. Jay kept the bike and stayed with NBC>Deciding factor in Letterman not getting the tonight show was because he didn't invite any NBC people to his Late Show 10th anniversary party>Jay Leno hid in the closet in an NBC executives office and listened to a conversation about Him and Letterman and took notes on what they thought Leno was doing well and what they thought Letterman was doing better>First two years of Leno's Tonight Show was being run by his insane bitch manager Helen Kushnick. Kathy Bates plays her in the Late Shift HBO movie that's how much of a terror this woman was.
>>218225072Leno was always the out of touch boomer and corporate office drone’s favorite late night guy. He was a harmless hack to everyone else. After the Conan debacle, coming back after Conan failed by the way, people started making things up to hate about him like he’s creepy. Letterman was the actual lecherous creep. Just a bunch of nonsense.
>>218225132https://archive.org/details/conantonight/Conan.O.Brien.2009.06.01.Will.Ferrell.HDTV.XviD-DVSKY.aviI've actually taken the time to watch Conan's Tonight Show run and I can agree it's a very rough start but definitely deserved time to improve. Leno's Tonight Show was a disaster for at least the first year and in many people opinion never really got much better. Just settled into a steady, mediocre background noise that was good for putting aging boomers to sleep. To give any leeway to NBC that their decisions were justified during this period is ludicrous. It was retarded then and it's still retarded now
>>218224877And yet nowhere near as funny. Leno lost.
>>218225132buddy there is an entire documentary on youtube made about everything that happened. stop being a faggot.https://youtu.be/vBV-mm84rSI
>>218225210>time to improveHe steadily declined in ratings for months straight. He was not a good fit for TTS. He didn't click with boomers and his lame adjustments and move to LA put off his regular fanbase.
>>218225257>a documentary negates the reality that his numbers were shit long before leno's show ever aired
>>218225210Elaborating on what I don't like about Conan's Tonight Show and what didn't work about it1. Too loud. Way too fucking loud. They're sort of playing to the DVR crowd that's going to be watching this the next day, not the live audience that's trying to settle into bedtime. Stop shouting so much.2. Insane choice of guests for a first 6 months. Norm Macdonald had 3 appearances in 6 months. Nothing to promote just there to hang out. Conan is indulging himself and his audience from his 1230 show. Needs more mainstream guests3. Monologues are a total drag. Conan will get hung up on a single joke riffing unscripted about the audiences reaction or a face that Max Weinberg made or whatever. With Leno it was boom boom boom one joke after another. Didn't even have time to groan at a shitty punchline before a slightly better one came along to make you forget the shitty one. Move on to the next Joke/segment.
>>218225257A Conan fanboy made a YouTube video about it?! That means it’s all true! Dumb zoomer.
everyone realized he was in the right, so they stopped talking about it to avoid embarrassment
Is he the ultimate boomer? Right down to the car collection. He’s led such a charmed life it’s unreal.
>>218224603Every talk show monkey will meet the same fate.
>>218224961>the tonight show>nobody gave enough of a fuck to put it to tapeHoly shit what an embarassment

>>218226122>replying to himself
>>218224603Carson is the real hack
Jay Leno's material is as bland and safe as a bowl of oatmeal. He's not controversial, he's a workaholic and he does what he's supposed to do as he grinds day after day. He's also incredibly calculated and ruthless. There's a lot of anger in there.
>>218226365Reminds me that one of the edges that Leno had over Letterman was that Leno was willing to do OJ material. Letterman find it to be a bit distasteful to joke about a double homicide
People wasted their lives staying up to watch this garbage, nowadays it's even worse and oversaturated what the fuck is wrong with you
>>218225072jaywalking was hilarious come on

>>218224603What a weird thread.
>>218225906both bits from other shows
>>218227174What is weird about it. This show was a fixture of American life for people's entire childhood and is now disappeared completely because the parent company chooses to keep everything in a vault. Colbert and the daily show advertised after every show that you could watch the archives before they shut it down asWhile back. No reason, just spite.
>>218225780He almost burned to death too.
It's looking more and more like the 90s and 00s won't get to have the nostalgia popularity of the 60s through 80s because a lot of people are in positions of power who just want the entire 20 years to be memory holed after all this Epstein stuff.
>>218227278Has nothing to do with that. They dont want competition to current programming so they make it impossible to watch archives. Network tv is dying and losing a battle against streaming and is squeezing as much ad dollars as it can. Deal or no deal was the dumbest game show ever.
>>218227338I think it has a *lot* to do with that. Jay did so many interviews over the years and probably a lot of them contained anecdotes that would be considered very scandalous today. As the years go by just watch as they begin to bubble up from the tape collectors and get various celebrities in hot water.
>>218227147what an awful outfit on conan. i can respect rob reiner grandpamaxxing
Conan gave us Mommy Movsesian the queen of /tv/ show some fucking respect
>>218227643Literally swollen with child mommy mommy mommy mommy
>>218227658Endlessly plappable
>>218227682I liked the segment where Conan takes her to.buy a car. Getting to.know the staff was endearing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1uqguKwzCQhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSO_a881-Mohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-IszpTfUroThe outtakes from the TBS show are really illuminating because you can see a bored and genuinely frustrated Conan half jokingly insult his writing staff for the awful, never going to make it to air comedy bits they were coming up with. Those final stripped down Conan episodes before he quit to do the podcast were so sad. Riding that early streaming wave was a double edged sword for Conan.
>>218227822Conan's a bitch.
>>218227822Conan does have an acerbic edge that reveals itself and you can see that he is a human who gets upset and angry.
>>218226986That doesn't happen at all. What the fuck interviews are you watching. Conan always lets his guest, especially comedians, do their thing.
>>218227896Combined with that Lampoon brain he can actually be really cutting and brutal when he insults somebody.
>>218224603Never hear about this guy
>>218227901Nah, especially if he doesnt think you are in the same league. H. Jon benjamin wanted to do the tom cruise jump on the couch bit and he sandbagged it immediately because he was his boss for years.
>>218227521I had some cool bands recorded on vhs but threw them away when I got internet. Bad move. The joe rogan shitting on Mathew Broderick for godzilla is so awkward especially when he could easily counter with, you do fear factor.

The weird, special interest trending guest are a time capsule that i would like to see. Something went viral and they did a circuit among the morning shows and late night. Can't think of any besides Ross the gay intern blowing up.
The host before Ferguson was such a smarmy douchebag he got kicked out of any cameo spots.
>>218224603No way this dude is literally THE World Greatest Expert on Automobiles. The British guy came here and was blown away. So in his own field he is more known and respected than he probably was in comedy. You want a real memoryhole Craig Kilborn. This guy got fired from his show and legit banned from Hollywood itself.
>>218227338DONDI Island now THAT was dumb but close second. >>218227901That anon is exaggerating a lot but nah Conans thing is definitely to freak out in a joking way to something random the guest says HE LEFT THE TAP WATER ON? Pimpbot is also arguably racist. That bear went way too far. Conan is only funny bantering.
>>218224603He never got political. That make him a winner in my book. Leno won!
>>218225160The little thing that is interesting to me about it is the parallel to real life. Gen X hits their 30s-40s at this time and begins to say OK its my turn to get management or talk show host role, 58-62 whatever is pretty old right?Boomers represented by Jay Leno was like "you want my job? >>218224603I know him because of Jerma and Vinesauce
>>218226365>>218226425His humor is a product of his hometown (mine as well). The private school is literally the best boarding school in the world. Kennedys bushes everyone of importance goes there. Zuckerberg went to its sister school. The public school is very good and very competitive tons of people go to ivies, but it's not the private one.The next town over is the town that Archie comics was based on. The whole area is one of the whitest most quintessential upper middle class areas in the world. Basically white compton. When you grow up in that environment you tend to be numb to everything. When JFK jr is attending school across town along with a few of the Bushes and Belichick's son you get jaded in the way people from beverly hills get jaded towards celebrity and life itself. But it doesn't have the beverly hills hollyweird weirdness to it because it's a very normal area that a lot of people don't know has such powerful connections.Personally I share a lot of the same bland humor. There are very few people that truly appreciate the fact that you don't have to score a knockout laugh out loud joke every joke. Sometimes it's fun to just be mildly amused.

He was accused of forcing out Carson in the early 90s because his batshit insane manager, whom he later fired, planted stories in the newspaper. >>218225188Letterman came off as more personable. People thought Leno was an emotionless robot. In reality it was actually the opposite. I could write a thesis on how shitty of a person Letterman was.
>>218237866>Letterman came off as more personable.lmao. Nobody ever said that. He was a sharp witted prick and barely bothered to hide it.
>>218237866>>218238350He was a curmudgeon that also was hypersensitive to critique.
>>218225072>another black guy named Brandford MarseillesBrandofrd's a very well known musician
>>218237866leno was uglythat's why nobody liked him. so was conan tbf
>>218238350He was more human. Leno had this sterile thing about him.
>>218237231Carson actually had varied guests on too. Late night shows now are basically solely a vehicle for some creative to plug the new thing they've made or are starring in. You rarely see multiple guests interact anymore either.
>>218225160Late Shift was a great movie but it gets a lot of shit for some reason
>>218238599>that's why nobody liked himHe beat every other late night competitor for years. Go to sleep boomer
>>218238779Letterman booked the guy who played him just so he could bump him
im a huge conan fan but mostly just late night. tonight show wasnt good and tbs mostly sucked ass. his podcast shows that long form interviews arent his style because he needs to make almost all of them about himself
>>218224603Letterman was always better, NBC was just too normie man
>>218238920I'd do the same thing. There's only one me
>>218239106Nah, that's a bitch move. Dr. Phil did it right.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qaDpJfAOe94
>>218238944Yup, throwing watermelons off a roof is real avant garde humor.
>>218238920>>218239106That 'actor' is Johnny Michael Higgins
>>218239278Shut up bitch
>>218237106>This show made zero sense.Did you not comprehend of lyrics of the intro? https://youtu.be/NzbgHf14dI8Three kids who liked comics, went into Leno mansion. They freed Leno from his memory hole and he turned them into Beetle Borgs.
>>218225033Gray Leno was also memoryholed, or (more accurately) mentally repressed
>huge, awful looking set compared to his NYC studio>passes on A list guests for C list comedians>brought back useless unfunny fat fuck andy richter for some reason>max weinberg delegated to band duty and not bantering with conan (whenever he was actually there and not touring with springsteen)>letterman finally started beating the tonight show under his tenureWas it ultimately a good thing that Conan lost The Tonight Show?
>>218239433max being le deadpan creep was too risque for the 11:30 crowd, unfortunately
>>218224603He was incredibly bland. Never said anything offensive, never stuck his neck out, just mumbled through each show with a 7/10 performance. He wasn't offensively bad like Fallon or Colbert but there was nothing remarkable about him besides his longevity
Jay Leno taught me about crazy steam powered cars. I love this guy. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rUg_ukBwsyo
Conan O'Brien has the most mismanaged career of any comedian out there. He's funny as shit when interacting with regular people on the street and his remotes are the bomb. But for some reason he insisted on being a late show guy and following a format that was already stale in 1995. It doesn't work for him. And then he started doing this literally who podcast where he just reminisces with other comedians. Dude never embraced his strengths
>>218239433They wouldn't let Max run wild. They let him molest his wife one time.
>>218225160These proto-podcasts are such an odd phenomenon. Without the internet they relied on being broadcast, requiring a gigantic production operation. Huge amounts of money being thrown around for such a silly product.
>>218231826>he fell for the memeDon't get me wrong it's a great story. Jives perfectly with Leno's 'likable everyman' persona. But he's is way smarter than people think. More along the lines of 'highly motivated laser-focused sociopath always thinking ten steps ahead of everyone else'. Norm knew thishttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mj_N-0xdNEM
>>218224603Why did the mob beat him up
>>218224603Good. This genetic abnormality should never have seen the light of day.
>>218239682Didn't pay his gambling debts
>>218239590I never liked his show that much. He tried too hard and I got more laughs from Andy Richter anyway. Now that he's a youtuber like everyone else I actually find him amusing.
>>218233997Based. Only came here to rep my boy craig ferguson
>>218239682He kept sneaking into the village every night and eating three or four children. So the townsfolk gave him a good thrashing and chased him back into the haunted forest.
>>218239590He hosted a TV show for 30 years, how lacking in self introspection are you to write this stupid shit?
>>218239863He hosted a show for 30 years and he's known as "that guy who got cucked by Leno"
>>218239863Colbert has been hosting for 20 years. Does that make him good?
>>218239927Everybody saw Leno as the fucking loser in that situation though
>>218224603>always #1 in the ratings>outsmarted everyone>came out on top every time>adored worldwide to this dayThe only thing he can't do? Lose.
>>218240336>The only thing he can't do?Pay his debts on time.
>>218224603the first cancellation everi feel glad
>>218224961Pierre Bernard's Recliner Of Rage
>>218224877>Better monologue than conanSure, he's a better comedian but Conan had better writers>Better band than conanNo way. Conan has the best band in late night history hands down.>Better segments than conanNot even close. Leno's segments are the worst out of Carson, Letterman, Conan, Ferguson, etc.>Better guest interaction than conanLeno only had good interactions with comedians or people who shared his kind of blue-collar sensibilities whereas Conan was great with everybody and could even make some vapid Hollywood whore seem interesting for 3 minutes. But Carson is the GOAT here.
Letterman was better through the mid 90s and that's when Conan was at his peak too. But in the late 90s, Leno became slightly better an definitely a more skilled comedian and late night host. I liked them both but Leno came out the best in the end. I actually went to tapings of letterman a few times and that was fun.Conan was meant for the slot after the main show. He's not meant to be the main event. Conan was great back in the day but he wasn't meant to the headliner and everyone pretended like he was. It's pretty obvious Leno comedymogs and jestermaxxed conan, or whatever the kids say
>>218240642Nah, Letterman's peak was in the late 80s/early 90s. Conan's peak was in the late 90s and early 00s.The thing that separates Carson from all of these guys is that he was the king for like 30 years straight.
>>218224877>better guest interaction not even fuckin closeleno hated when his guests were funnier than him made for shitty awkward tv
>>218240652I'm pretty sure my post was agreeing with you. Letterman was great until 94/95.Back in like 94 or 95 I wrote Conan some fan mail. I was an edgy teen back then and we all loved staying up to watch conan because it was the first time we'd seen like a weird talk show. Yeah, it's not really weird now but by standards of the day it was weird seeing something like that not on cable TV. But conan wrote a little note back saying thanks for watching on an 8x10 black and white photo. I framed it and it's probably in the attic at my moms house. I haven't watched anything conan has done in 20 years but I like that he sent me a personalized autographed picture back before he was well known
>>218240854Conan always had top tier musical guest taste as well whereas Leno would mostly have popslop. Letterman did well too but Conan in particular always had cool bands on.I remember seeing La Bamba and the horn guys from the Max Weinberg 7 playing backup for King Krule, stuff like that
>>218241022Yeah he did have the best musical guests. I remember so many good ones...Uncle Tupelo, sponge where they had the singer from letters to cleo for some reason, Belly. I remember there was a whole David bowie show where he did a couple songs. I actually bought the afghan wigs black love cd a few days after they played on conan because I liked it
>>218224895No wonder, that shit is great
>>218233732I will die on this hill that "background noise" is some sort of low IQ phenomenon. Like how the fuck does your brain need mindless dogshit running 24/7 to feel 'relaxed'?
>>218236866At least Asmon occasionally shares knowledge/value that has merit. If it wasn't for Zack I never would have played E33, Wind Rose, or looked up Psyanime. I will also say I don't consume any asmon content that is longer than 10 minutes unless he's watching other content that I'm pre interested in. 99 percent of Asmon's content does more for the soul/mind than anything Leno ever did.
>>218225039>>218225087>tonight show>comes on the next daylol>>218225132Conan lost it after Obama was elected. The humor wasn't the same. He's also geninely not talented. I remember watch his documentary and he's a nice guy and cares about his people but I genuinely can't figure out why he was ever a thing.
>>218225307Norm on Conan was the gold standard.
>>218232679>Who the fuck wants to watch Matthew McConaughey talk about what a blast he had filming his newest slop?middle aged normies who made up the bulk of the viewership?
>>218233997CF was the only one who actually fit what the audience wanted. He was disarmingly good-looking (mogging all the others), he was charming (mogging Leno and Letterman, and to a lesser extent Conan), he was the second most intelligent and second hardest worker (Leno wins this one), he had the second-best interviews (I give this one to Conan), and other than Letterman, he was consistently the funniest/cleanest. He had all of their strengths and none of their weaknesses.
>>218232202Wasn't he class president and valedictorian in high school?
>>218224603Good. Anyone that says his show was better than Conan's should be clubbed like a baby seal. Conan literally had the best context writers in the business working for him... even "Actual Items" was funnier than the original bit.
>>218237866Explain why Letterman was a shitty human being, not a shitty talk show host. I never got the impression that Leno or Conan are bad people. Leno was just a ruthless competitor in the workspace and Conan was an overachiever.
>>218241797*comedy writersfucking autocorrect...
>>218224955Conan's tonight show was unbelievably terrible, I remember it well! Packaging their cheap surreal weirdo shit in a big fancy production was so stupid. At least Letterman's transition went well, because he leaned into extremely great remote segments, rather than just increasing the scale of his little weird on-set quirk chungus bits (which he started doing out of frustration and total surrender when Leno beat his ass, too).
>>218224877I'm afraid you're just a nigger contrarian
>>218241446You dont want to wallow in negative thoughts and want to be entertained. Something artistic might require focus and emotional investment.
>>218237866what a bizarrely inverted take. Leno always cultivated a warm image like Carson did. Letterman was always a cunt and doing bizarrely obvious dominance struggles with guests. He got over in the first place by being the weirder funnier late night show after Carson with better sketch type content, which attracted kids. Conan was basically a copy of Letterman without the sense of aggression.
>>218239590>Conan O'Brien has the most mismanaged career of any comedian out thereIt remarkable how famous and rich he is considering how weak his monologues and interviews were. He should have just remained a writer.>>218239645Calling Jay Leno a “sociopath” for working hard and understanding network politics is retarded. Showbiz is competitive, protecting your job and playing the game isn’t evil, it’s survival. And Conan losing doesn't make him a good guy.
>>218239590I feel like he only got over doing the late late show because at the start he was so insanely nervous and desperate during interviews that it was like people cheering for a disabled person. People didn't know he was some Harvard mafia guy that had been pivotal on the Simpsons.
>>218241705>he had the second-best interviews (I give this one to Conan),Conan's interviews sucked. Letterman was better
>>218238742>You rarely see multiple guests interact anymore either.Mulaney did it with his netflix show that nobody watched and it was a disaster>Too many guests on the couch at once>Also a call in segment for some reason so instead of the professional comedians making jokes you get some random person with nothing interesting to say>3 musical segments in a single episode>Bands inserted in the middle of the show instead of at the end. Every late night show knew better than to do this
>>218226365>He's also incredibly calculated and ruthlessHow do you know this? Hearsay? His own admission? Deduction from whatever you read and heard about him over the years?
>>218243946Bitter losers like Letterman, Conan, and Kimmel said he is so it must be true
>>218241022Rewatching old Conan shows I noticed the Max Weinberg 7 playing a lot of obscure Who songs which I really appreciated. Playing "Cousin Kevin" when Kevin Nealon is walking out is a particularly inspired choice.
>>218243563>Calling Jay Leno a “sociopath” for working hard and understanding network politics is retarded.lmao the guy would literally hide in the closet of the NBC boardroom and eavesdrop on the network execs meetingsHoward Stern even warned Conan about it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxcAAb60lik&t=82s
>>218244376>lmao the guy would literally hide in the closet of the NBC boardroom and eavesdrop on the network execs meetingsThis was based tho. Bugs Bunny type behavior. What a fucking stinker
>>218243325>bizarrely obvious dominance struggles with guestsExample?
