>Considered for Sidney Prescott: Molly Ringwald, Drew Barrymore, Reese Witherspoon, Claire Danes, Robin Tunney, Brittany Murphy, Melanie Lynskey, Alicia Witt, A.J. Langer and Melissa Joan Hart. Ringwald, Witherspoon, Danes and Tunney turned it down. Barrymore preferred to play Casey Becker in the opening scene.>Considered for Gale Weathers: Janeane Garofalo and Brooke Shields. Elizabeth Berkeley tried to audition, but was turned down because she starred in "Showgirls". Courteney Cox heavily pursued the role because she wanted to play a bitch to offset her nice girl image from "Friends".>David Arquette tested for both Billy Loomis and Stu Macher before being cast as Dewey Riley. Dewey was originally a hunky chad who died in the end, it was Arquette’s idea to play him as goofy yet competent. His performance was so popular that Wes Craven reshot the ending to have him survive.>Considered for Billy: Joaquin Phoenix, Ben Affleck, Michael Landes, Justin Whalin and Kevin Patrick Walls. Phoenix and Affleck turned it down. Walls came the closest and was cast as Casey’s boyfriend Steve Orth as consolation.>Considered for Stu: Freddie Prinze Jr. and Ethan Embry. Matthew Lillard was cast by chance. He was accompanying his girlfriend to an audition for a different project in the same building, caught the "Scream" casting director’s attention and was asked to audition.>Considered for Randy Meeks: Breckin Meyer, Jason Lee and Seth Green. Jamie Kennedy won because he kept ad-libbing his own jokes. Randy would originally end up with Sidney, but the chemistry between Kennedy and Neve Campbell wasn’t strong enough.>Considered for Tatum Riley: Rebecca Gayheart and Malinda Clarke. Gayheart came the closest, but had to drop out, so she was cast as Lois in "Scream 2" as consolation. Tatum was originally a tomboy. It was Rose McGowan’s idea to have her be a stacy to contrast with Sidney.
>Directors considered: Robert Rodriguez, Sam Raimi, Danny Boyle and George A. Romero. According to writer Kevin Williamson, all of them played up the comedy too much and Wes Craven was the only one to find the right balance. Rodriguez later shot the Stab film scenes for "Scream 2".>There was a big debate between Craven and the studio on whether Billy and Stu should have proper motives or just be killing people for the sake of it. They eventually compromised on Billy having an actual motive and Stu just being a psycho.>The studio didn’t have faith in the film and almost cancelled it until Craven screened a fully edited and scored version of the opening scene that impressed the execs.>The original title was "Scary Movie", which was rejected for sounding like a parody and wound up being used in the actual "Scream" parody movie.>Ghostface would originally wear a white robe, but focus groups said it made him look like a Klansman.>Principal Himbry’s death was added after the studio complained that nobody died in the second act.>Drew Barrymore was front and center in the poster and trailer so audiences would be surprised when she dies in the opening scene.>According to Craven, Williamson and the actors, Billy killed Steve, Himbry and Tatum, while Stu killed Casey and Kenny the cameraman.
>Considered for Mickey Altieri: Tobey Maguire and Eric Mabius.>Considered for Cici Cooper: Reese Witherspoon and Alicia Silverstone.>Titles considered: “Scream Again” and “Scream Louder”.>Sidney’s boyfriend Derek Feldman and her best friend Hallie McDaniel were originally the killers aiding Nancy Loomis, while Mickey would try to save Sidney before being ambushed and killed by the two. After the ending leaked online, Craven reshot it to make Mickey the killer.>The original script was very different from the final version: Dewey was a campus security officer, Randy was Gale’s new cameraman, Derek was the horror-obsessed film student and Mickey the clean-cut med student, and Joel was a student rather than Gale’s cameraman. The biggest change was the ending: Dewey dies from his injuries, and after killing Nancy Loomis, Cotton Weary stabs Gale to death in revenge for ruining his life and chases Sidney around until they mortally wound each other and die side by side. The studio obviously refused the idea of killing off all the main characters and ending the franchise.>Mickey was supposed to be the one who runs into Gale covered in blood (due to finding a wounded Dewey and trying to help him), leading Gale to suspect he is the killer. Due to the reshoots, they gave that scene to Cotton, even though it makes no sense why he would be creeping around campus after hours.>Joel was supposed to get killed, but the actor Duane Martin convinced Wes Craven it would make more sense for Joel to peace out of the film after Randy gets killed.>Craven didn’t get along with Sarah Michelle Geller, particularly due to having to accommodate for her “Buffy” schedule.>According to Craven, Nancy Loomis killed Randy and stabbed Dewey, while Mickey killed everyone else.>A deleted ending scene had another Ghostface watching Sidney from the college’s bell tower, implying her nightmare would never end.
>Considered for Detective Mark Kincaid: Ben Affleck and David Boreanaz.>Considered for Angelina Tyler: Alicia Silverstone, Reese Witherspoon, Katie Holmes, Claire Danes, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Christina Ricci, Christie Clark, Allyson Hannigan and Kellie Martin.>Considered for Jennifer Jolie: Selma Blair and Tea Leoni.>Considered for Tom Prinze: Josh Hartnett, Paul Walker and James Van Der Beek.>Considered for Sarah Darling: Kate Hudson, Tara Reid and Ali Larter.>Considered for Cotton’s girlfriend Christine Hamilton: Denise Richards, Alyssa Milano and Charisma Carpenter.>Considered for Jennifer’s bodyguard Steve Stone: Stone Cold Steve Austin (hence the name).>Considered for Randy’s sister Martha Meeks: Fairuza Balk.>Considered for studio archivist Bianca Burnett: Jamie Lee Curtis and Meryl Streep.>Considered for studio exec John Milton: Christopher Walken.>The original script featured Sidney working as a guidance counselor in Woodsboro High and Ghostface being a group of misfit students obsessed with the Stab films mentored by Stu. They scrapped it because of Columbine.
>Angelina was originally the second killer aiding Roman, but the studio was concerned that two killers would remind people of Columbine and changed the ending so Roman was working alone. Craven briefly considered having Kincaid’s partner Detective Wallace having been bribed by Roman to sabotage the investigation, but ultimately decided against it.>The movie went into production without a complete script since Kevin Williamson wasn’t available. There were constant rewrites on set, and even Carrie Fisher, who had a small role as Bianca Burnett, did some uncredited rewrites.>A deleted opening scene would show Sidney accidentally killing a Stab fan who broke into her house to play a prank on her by dressing as Ghostface, leading to her going into hiding.>A deleted ending scene had a recording of Randy telling his friends to forget the horror movies for a while and watch a comedy for a change, before listing some of his favorites>Sidney’s role was reduced because Neve Campbell was not fully available.>Craven got a lot of hate for killing Randy in “Scream 2” and considered bringing him back by revealing he survived and was under witness protection, but decided that was too contrived.>Kincaid was originally the main red herring before the rewrites made him Sidney’s love interest. Since he no longer had a purpose, they considered killing him in the third act, but Craven decided to spare him to give Sidney a happy ending.>Roman obviously killed everyone, but the movie was filmed with Angelina as the second killer, and she would have been the one to kill Sarah, Tom and Tyson Fox.
>Considered for Jill Roberts: Anna Kendrick, Lucy Hale, Ashley Greene, Scout Taylor-Compton and Mary Elizabeth Winstead.>Considered for Kirby Reed: Emma Stone, Aubrey Plaza and Alia Shawkat.>Considered for Deputy Judy Hicks: Lake Bell, Christina Ricci, Anna Friel and Amanda Peet. Bell was cast, but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts.>Considered for Jill’s mother Kate Roberts: Lauren Graham, Kim Rhodes and Elizabeth Perkins. Graham was cast, but dropped out when the character was changed in rewrites. Mary McDonnell, who played the role, refused to attend the premiere after most of her scenes were cut.>Considered for Jill’s friend Olivia Morris: Ally Michalka and Jenna Coleman.>Considered for Judy’s friend Marcie Perkins: Gabrielle Union and Rutina Wesley. The character was ultimately cut from the movie.>Considered for opening scene cameos: Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Selena Gomez and Kristen Stewart.>Titles considered: “Scream Forever”.>Script differences: Kate was the main red herring. Gale and Dewey had a baby son. Rebecca Walters was a school reporter who idolizes Gale and gets killed in the final massacre. Sidney’s publicist who gets killed in the parking lot is an older woman, Beth. Deputy Perkins’s sister Marcie was a friend of Gale’s, and Deputy Hoss was the third killer alongside Jill and Charlie Walker.
>Original opening: Sidney at a restaurant with friends when a schizophrenic Stab fan attacks her and leaves her severely injured. She would have written her self-help book while in the hospital recovering from her injuries.>Original ending: Sidney survives but develops amnesia and doesn’t remembering Jill is the killer, and Jill gets away with her crimes. This was supposed to lead into “Scream 5”, where Jill is attending the same college where Sidney works as a professor, and suits up as Ghostface again when Sidney’s memories begin coming back, while a different Ghostface – who would be revealed as the still-alive Kirby – begins stalking Jill.>Craven and Williamson also had plans for “Scream 6” focusing on Gale fighting a Ghostface cult in Woodsboro following Dewey’s death in “Scream 5”, and getting caught in a love triangle with two men, one of which would be the new Ghostface.>The studio got cold feet about Jill getting away and added she scene where she attacks Sidney and gets killed. Even then, Craven had Sidney shoot Jill in the chest rather than the head, and added a closing shot of Jill still twitching in case he decided to bring her back.>Deputy Hicks was supposed to die, but much like Dewey, test-audiences liked the character so much they changed the ending so she survived.>Patrick Dempsey was approached to cameo as Kincaid, who would be revealed as Sidney’s boyfriend, but he wasn’t available.>Per Craven, Williamson and the actors, Jill killed Julie Randall, Rebecca Walters, Deputy Hoss, Deputy Perkins and Kate, while Charlie killed Marnie Cooper, Olivia Morris and Robbie Mercer.
>Considered for Sam Carpenter: Samara Weaving.>Differences from the original script: Tara Carpenter and Amber Freeman were a couple, Sam and Tara’s mother Christina Carpenter was in town and was the main red herring until Ghostface kills her, and Chad Meeks-Martin died from his injuries. After they decided to spare Chad, they considered killing his sister Mindy, but test-audiences liked her, so in the end both twins survived.>Patrick Dempsey was approached to cameo as Kincaid, who would be revealed as Sidney’s husband, but he wasn’t available.>Hayden Panettiere was approached to cameo as Kirby, who would be revealed as a creative consultant on Rian Johnson’s Stab 8, but she wasn’t available.>Chad’s girlfriend Liv originally had a minor role, but the directors liked the actress, so they expanded her part, made her a red herring and changed her surname to “McKenzie” to connect her to the originals (The McKenzies were Casey’s neighbors in the first movie).>David Arquette was disappointed about Dewey’s death. Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox tried to convince the directors to shoot an alternative version where Dewey survived as Wes Craven usually did with popular characters, but they had already decided that Dewey had die for real this time to raise the stakes.>Per the directors and cast, Amber attacked Tara and killed Judy Hicks, Wes Hicks and Dewey, while Ritchie killed Vince Schneider.
My notes. 3 is the best one. They should have kept Parker Posey alive. Wish the original 5 existed and would have liked Emma Roberts to survive. Getting away with it would be fun too. RIP IN PEACE, W.C.
>The original script featured Sidney, but Neve Campbell declined to return due to a salary dispute, so Sidney was written out of the plot.>Sam’s boyfriend Danny Brackett would have been killed in the end, but the directors decided to spare him and give Sam a happy ending.>Per the directors, Wayne Bailey killed aspiring Ghostfaces Jason Carvey and Greg Bruckner and attacked the Carpenter sisters at the bodega; Ethan Landry killed Annika Kayoko and Quinn Bailey’s boyfriend Paul; and Quinn killed Sam’s therapist Dr. Christopher Adams, attacked Gale at her apartment and stabbed Mindy in the subway.
>The original script followed Sam, Tara, Chad and Mindy in New York City and Sam becoming Ghostface and fighting a different Ghostface targeting her friends, but this was scrapped after Melissa Barrera was fired for her comments on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and Jenna Ortega dropped out in solidarity. Original director Christopher Landon also dropped out after being blamed for Barrera’s firing and receiving death threats, so the studio brought Neve Campbell back as Sidney and called upon Kevin Williamson to write and direct the movie.>Patrick Dempsey was approached to play Sidney’s husband Mark Kincaid, but was unavailable, so Joel McHale was cast as a completely different character named Mark Evans.>McKenna Grace tested for Sidney’s daughter Tatum Evans before being cast as her friend Hannah Truman.
>>218227987Why do Skeet Ulrich and David Arquette look completely different in this poster than they do in the movie?
>>218228796The plots and killers are just getting ridiculous now.Just have Stu come back, kill Sidney and Gale, before getting killed by Tatum and be done with it ffs.
>>218228080>Craven didn’t get along with Sarah Michelle Geller, particularly due to having to accommodate for her “Buffy” schedule.Wasn't there an inside joke that they named Jenny McCarthy's character Sarah Darling because Wes Craven thought Sarah Michelle Gellar was a pain in the ass? Not just because of her schedule.
>>218227987They should do an alternate timeline where all the fan favorites are alive and hanging out with Sidney; Dewey, Randy, Jennifer, and Kirby. No Gales allowed.
>>218230443Yep, this is true.
Sex with Sidney (scream)
>>218230937I also remember hearing I forget the actor that said it but Wes Craven was trying to give the younger cast direction while filming a scene for Scream 4 and they were all on their phones while he was talking to them. I think it was Matthew Lillard or maybe Skeet Ulrich who visited the set and saw this.
