Rewatched the whole thing for the first time since watching it when it came out. Always knew season 8 was shit but man I DID NOT realize how bad it got in season 5 onwards. Season 6/7 genuinely feels like a Marvel show.

yeah it's pretty sad
>>
How is that even possible? I remember raging at the obvious decline in quality when 4 started, and it was a steep slope from there.

Ending was kino though. Not in itself, but for watching the Dany-suckers lose their minds.
>>
How jarring is teleportation when marathoning it?
>>
>>218228254
nta, but extremely.
>>

not OP, but a lot of people got on board after S3 and were exposed to significantly less of the good material, while others had bog standard cognitive dissonance trying to reason away why a show they enjoyed wasn't turning to shit.
S8 was noteworthy in being so shit it broke that dissonance well before the ending, which is usually the point where people are forced to face the fact a last minute save isn't going to happen.

>after S3
After S3 is where I’d argue the showrunners stopped caring. The red wedding was the only reason they took the job.
>>
>>218228485
I noticed around S3 or S4, a lot of normies and women were starting to watch too. Prior to that, it seemed to be mostly watched by fantasy nerds and dudes who read the books.
>>
>>218228485
I guess it makes sense, but I cannot fathom jumping into a show without catching up on past seasons. Do normies really?
>>
>>218228013
Let's be honest, there is no season 8. They split Season 7 up into two halves and called the second half Season 8 as an excuse to string the audience along.
>>
>>218228504
It didn't help that they had to plan around the fact they were rapidly running out of material to adapt.
They stopped caring right at the critical point where they needed to plan out the OC that would tie up until the ending.

>Littlefinger getting brain damage and leaving Sansa with the Boltons, Stannis butchered, Barristan dies for no reason
Season 5 was the point of no return but somehow the show kept it's momentum.

>Rewatched the whole thing
You are masochist
>>
Yeah it was odd seeing people act like season 8 being crap was a shock. The writing had been on the wall for years.
>>
>>218228013
During rewatches I usually skip every episode except Blackwater and Watchers of the Wall

t. GOT expert
>>
funny, i stopped watching after 4. tried to watch 5 a few times but could never get into it
>>
>>218228530
no
>>
>>218228530
It's really dumb and likely not the case. We had tons of rewatches between seasons since it was so epic and obviously building to something amazing... haven't rewatched every again since S6
>>
>>218228013
I saw it as it was happening. I tried to tell the other people I was watching with that something was wrong. They said I was being silly and it would be fine.
>>
>>218228013
The quality dropped significantly after S3. By S5 it was unwatchable. It baffles me that people didn't notice until S7.
>>
>>218228013
I was put off by S2 when memorable side characters got written out, recast or just memoryholed, namely Greatjon, Rakharo, original Mountain and Shagga.
>>
>>218228013
I remember being hyped for season 5 because season 4 is where the books ended. They made it seem like no character was safe from death only for every character end up with plot armor for the rest of the series.
>>
>>218228520
They complained a lot, especially about Ramsey and Sansa and you got the feeling the producers began watering the show down to keep them pacified.
>>
>>218228239
The only thing missing from season 4 was stoneheart. Everything else is still top quality.
>>
>>218233554
I think S4 is the perfect stopping point.
But don’t underestimate the number of people who have absolutely no metric for good storytelling. A lot were just mad because Dany went bad. They parrot more intelligent people saying that it was handled incredibly poorly, because it was, and they feel emboldened by the herd turning against the show, which they should. But a significant portion would’ve been angry no matter how well it was handled.
>>
To be totally honest the cracks start to show after Season 1. Season 1 is basically a 1:1 adaptation of the book with some slight changes to make things more palatable to TV audiences.
Season 2 and on started paring down elements from the books and playing fast and loose with the logic, and then it's all downhill from there.

It's been a long time, but my recollection is that this was when they went off the rails departing from the books, making up whole characters, etc. Faithful stuff was good, sure, but it was the beginning of the end
