NuTrek is just a product of the new Dark Ages. Back in the 1960s, people were obsessed with space exploration. It was seen as the next step of human evolution, it was seen as something inevitable. Man on the Moon, base on the Moon, man on Mars by 21st century.
Since then, those aspirations and dreams have been replaced by narcissistic navel gazing. People nowadays spend more time pondering what is between their legs than contemplating unknown possibilities of existence. Modern culture is obsessed with identity. We've abandoned religion and replaced it with a cult of hedonism.
And nothing represents it better than those NuTrek shows. You look at TOS and TNG and they represent that Space Race spirit perfectly. By the time of DS9, different storytelling priorities started developing, but ENT still had have love for space exploration within our lifetime, maybe inspired by the Space Shuttle program.
But by 2011, the program had ended, and we entered what I would call the new cultural Dark Ages. Space exploration faded from collective consciousness, replaced by inward obsession with identity. Before 2015, you could ask kids who they want to be when they grow up and they would all answer "astronaut." Now the answer is "influencer." Adolescents and young adults spend more time coming up with new genders to identify as than actually learning about the outside world.
You look at all these NuTrek shows and what they all have in common is that space exploration is completely secondary. Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, Starfleet Academy are not shows about space exploration. They're shows about self-discovery, feelings, emotions. Star Trek is secondary in that equation. Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds in particular are shows that are more interested in talking about Star Trek than actually being Star Trek.
So in the end it doesn't matter who owns Star Trek because current culture is incapable of producing or appreciating stories that elicit wonder and imagination

You're right, but I think you're wrong as well. The space race was a dick measuring contest between the US and the USSR. I'd like to think that NASA or any other space program on earth was as eager to reach the stars as we were back in the 60s, but the fact that we have no extraterrestrial colonies, and instead just a bunch of satellites around earth shows that the whole thing was just a dick measuring contest.

Oldtrek portrays a future where mankind can travel at speeds greater than the speed of light, and meet new worlds and shit. That sort of world becomes less and less real as the days go by, and i hate that

Troi isn’t even empathic shes a cold reader akin to John Edward and also Picard has autism. There’s a bunch of times where some REAL SHIT is going down with crew members and somehow she can’t “sense” it. The show doesn’t even explain it with some kind of psychic blocking thing they just don’t have her show up on screen.

The response to the episode “Wrongs darker than death or night” has always been bizarre to me. Fans say Kiras actions in this episode are irrational but thats the point. It’s supposed to be irrational. She was a child soldier and is suffering from PTSD. Just because she’s had episodes prior to this that challenge her world view doesn’t mean those years of conditioning are just magically going to go away, that’s not how that works. Especially with news that is so personal, of course she’s going to regress, of course rationality is going to go out the window, that kind of revelation is traumatic for someone like Kira. I also find the way people talk about Dukat odd, that this episode makes him too evil or petty. People seem to misconstrue Dukats complexity as a villain whose next move is hard to predict as moral complexity. Dukat was never morally complex, he was a repugnant monster from day one, he oversaw a system of torture, rape, and murder. His behavior in Waltz and Wrongs is not some dramatic shift in his character, it’s him going mask off. It was established before this that Dukat had raped a Bajoran woman, I have seen people unironically take Dukat at his word that it was a consensual and loving relationship, despite the fact that Cardassians raping Bajoran women was an established fact in season one. The implication was always pretty clear. I can understand people talking issue with the time travel plot and Siskos willingness to allow Kira to go back in time but honestly I don’t see it as any more ridiculous than any of the other plot conveniences in numerous other episodes.
>>
>>218319986
>that this episode makes him too evil or petty
it does. him calling up Kira in the middle of the night just to troll her is actually retarded and out of character. but it is in line with the character assassination agenda they set in motion after Waltz. if you're defending anything he does after that episode as making sense you're probably retarded.
>>
>>218320072
Truth. The bts situation is actually quite clear about it. Behr and RDM always had an agenda to make Dukat a cartoonish evil nazi villain. Wolfe and the various episodic writers, along with Alaimo, favored a more nuanced depiction of the character. When Wolfe left the show at the end of s5 Dukat was summarily flipped to be like Behr's ideal.

Waltz makes no sense to me. Why does he hit Dukat with a pipe and say he’s not actually evil since he didn’t kill all the bajorans like he should’ve and then at the end of the episode say Dukat is le hecking ultimate true evil turbo Hitler? The natural flow of the script should have something like Dax saying Dukat is an evil man and then Sisko being like

no the guy that got that guy's job. dukat was a mid level administrator from the space station not even overseeing shit on the ground. his job was receiving reports and making reports to his higher ups, the best he could do was minor reforms that probably werent even implemented by his junior officers. he wasn't even powerful enough to be a villain, he was a maritza who didn't realize it.

That's what it is, I guess you could say it's weird or marvely but it never bothered me, it's a small moment, I figured it's just Sisko thinking out loud. Also Dukat is evil precisely because he thinks he's being altruistic, he thinks that his "restraint" makes his crimes magically less horrific, that's the whole point of his character, he thinks that because he could have been far more brutal yet didn't that makes him a hero.

Waltz didn't need to exist in the first place the only reason it does is to hamfistedly spoonfeed the audience on Dukat's mindset so they have basically carte blanche to continue ruin his character from then on. he didn't need any explaining. in their incompetence that episode actually inadvertently sane-washes him by showing that he actually does harbor self-doubts and internalizes what other people think about him in an accurate way, which is unlike a true malignant narcissist who would never think like that.

I think it's insane that some of you make posts like this. Dukat in no uncertain terms wanted Bajorans to be a slave race for Cardassians. He wanted to work them endlessly and rape their women while exploiting their planet's resoruces. The only reason he killed slightly less Bajorans than his predecessors was so that he could Stockholm syndrome Bajorans into worshipping him and look better to other Cardassians by raising work efficiency. >>
>>218320990
anon, cardassians were a slave race to cardassia. dukat went as far with babying the bajorans as he could get without getting executed for treason but he wanted to go farther he was just weak. he was not capable of calling cardassia bad, even to himself, but what he really wanted was for the empire to become like the federation.

Why is wanting people happier not wanting to be hated evil? Because it makes you look good? Would it be good if it makes you look bad?

IMO Dukat did what any one of us in that position would do. Was the occupation evil? Sure. Was Dukat? He was just a person, a product of culture, experience and upbringing. There was nothing fundamentally different from a normal person to set him aside from anyone else in terms of being “evil”.

PICARD: They've left the Bajorans without a means of being self-sustaining. The relief efforts we've been coordinating are barely adequate. I've come to know the Bajorans. I'm a strong proponents for their entry into the Federation.
SISKO: Is it going to happen?
PICARD: Not easily. The ruling parties are at each others throats. Factions that were united against the Cardassians have resumed old conflicts.

You want to see Starfleet ensigns die horribly for no good reason?

This series was far too dark for my taste, to this day DS9 is the only Trek property that did "Dark Star Trek" in a way that still felt congruent with Star treks tone.

The amount of people that just get casually vaporized in Trek is horrifying. That hobo who accidentally vaporizes himself in TOS. That redshirt getting killed in the otherwise fun and silly "ATTENTION BAJORAN WORKERS" 'sode. etc. Ruins the otherwise comfy vibes of Tru-Trek. Plus the actually horrifying death like the woman who phases into the ground in an otherwise light-hearted eppy about Data trying out dating. Why do they ish like that?

It’s also weird that they’ll spend a whole episode coping with the loss of a literal who and then like the very next week some ensign manning Wesley’s chair will get crushed like a cockroach by a living god and Picard will be like
>wait… perhaps it’s just trying to communicate
>maybe we can still be friends with this new lifeform
>>
Who's the jabba of star trek?
>>
Just rewatched Waltz. I forgot how Sisko basically annoys him into radicalizing and the writers expect the audience to just go “well he said he always knew he should have killed them all… must’ve been thinking like that the whole time” like we’re toddlers

If he had been nicer to Dukat at any point Dukat would never reach the conclusion that he should have killed them and wanted to kill them. He wouldn’t even be an antagonist in s7

You're thinking of a Fiat, Ensign Gribble.

>Sisko
DS9 was an antithesis to ToS and TNG's tone and writing. No duh Sisko said "fuck the prime directive." A lesser captain like him HAS to bypass it to get things done.

>>218324225
>>218324575
You're retarded and detached from reality

Dukat desperately wanted not just Sisko but the entire bajoran people to see things his way as him being a just ruler .
If Sisko played along well enough dukat would have just been satisfied with Siskos simping , killed him and then continued on the same plan as what happened but without the emissary in his way .

>waltz explicitly has dukat's inner voices reveal all of his lies as he's lying to sisko in behr's desperate attempt to get right wing audiences to understand the story in the most blatant way
>racists who watch star trek think sisko is the one who made dukat that way and that dukat is a poor innocent victim

its not sisko. its the ungrateful bajoran scum that made dukat go mad

If Sisko simped for him all the voices in his head would shut up. They’d talk about sports or something until they’re rescued or escape. You clearly have not a single friend who doesn’t want to discuss politics with you.
>>
>>218324761
Imagine invoking racism in a discussion of a series where different alien races are fundamentally different from each other in capabilities, temperament and behavior.

I don't think you understand how unhinged , delousinal and obsessed Dukat is for that entire episode.

Did you even watch the episode ? They aren't trapped and Dukat can leave anytime he wants on his fully functional shuttle . He brought Sisko there to play his mentally ill game and torture him .

>You're friends only talk about politics
??? I don't know how to respond to this

Maybe you should have a little more empathy for the mentally ill like Dukat is. I swear this kind of ableism in 2026 is so uncool

But it's at least the 9th best Dukat episode
