Powering through the latter half of season 3 now - just finished the (topically titled) two-parter War Without End. Even more stuff I can't talk about without spoiling it for anyone who hasn't got this far yet, but, holy kino. Notable guest stars since my last thread include: the Golgafrinchan captain, Mr Suder, Admiral Forrest, Al the Bartender/God and Basil Exposition/Logan 5.Random (non-spoilery) observations:>Delenn is so damn wifeable. And has lovely hands.>I think I may end up being more of a B5 fan than a Star Trek fan. Granted, it may be recency bias. >>218340004>>Delenn is so damn wifeable. That's great anon, I remember being super protective of Delenn during my watch thru.
>strong female character that has actual emotions and flaws, is small and frail, her strength is her diplomatic and interpersonal skills which she uses realistically, as well as her unbreakable morality and strong willA character like Delenn would never be made today, if they reboot b5 like they're saying she'll be dual wielding handguns and punching out 6'5 men every other episode. I could actually see someone like Delenn being respected and put into real leadership roles irl, most strong female characters in modern shows would be despised by anyone they interacted with in real life.
>>218340004>I think I may end up being more of a B5 fan than a Star Trek fan. Granted, it may be recency bias. And granted, I may be feeling unfairly negative towards Trek as a whole due to how thoroughly the franchise has been ruined under Kurtzman. That's part of what makes Babylon 5 special. It told a complete story from beginning to end in five seasons, fully written ahead of time so that it even references future events that happened much later in the series. There's no Babylon 5: The Next Generation or Babylon 5: Discover to retroactively spoil your enjoyment of it. There's a couple of rather mediocre follow-up shows, but those aren't directly related to Babylon 5 and at the very least attempt to pursue their own unique storyline.
I hate Delenn, and all Minbari scum. Her romance with Sheridan was gay, in fact anytime B5 tried to do romance it was terrible
>>218340412Drummer and Avasarala from The Expanse are like Delenn in those ways
>>218340004It's more consistent because it was written by one guy who wrote the whole thing first. It wasn't a bunch of writer's, or a producer buying fanfic tier scripts and greenlighting them on a week-to-week basis.I still say G'Kar is the best.
>>218340634More Avasarala than Drummer, but yes.
b5 ruined star trek for me, just feels inferior. the events of 95% of episodes are never referenced again in any subsequent episodes. it's just a relic of mid 20th century television
>>218340815B5's long five year story was intricately planned out in advance. JMS even planned out backups if actors dropped out or things went wrong. And turned out he needed a lot of them. Star Trek was just make it up as you go along. They were in heaven when they got their hands on JMS's ideas and knew they could copy it for DS9

>>218340291>>218340412theres a small scene in season 5 with delenn in the lower decks episode when the workers ask her "you really do love each other dont you?" and she just gets this beaming smile and walks away, and they talk about her smile afterwards, that is just pure adorable and made me like her more

>>218344637The original series was filmed on 16 sets built in an old hot tub factory but I fail to see how that would have caused Richard Biggs’ aortic dissection, Tim Choate’s motorcycle accident, Jerry Doyle’s heart failure due to chronic alcoholism, or Stephen Furst’s diabetes.

>>218344519Some have theorized that the production was exposed to toxic chemicals since they filmed in an old Jacuzzi factory next to a waste processing facility but several of them had addiction problems that ended up killing them. Mira Furlan was 65 when she died, which was relatively young, but not insanely so. Richard Biggs is the only one that really stands out, dying at 44 of a weird heart condition.
>>218344328>thing that happened irl takes you by surprise not shit retard. The show is not real
>>218344637That might have started with Patricia Tallman. She complained in her book about the environment where they filmed, especially about the waste transfer plant behind the studio building. The studio itself was cramped, with poor air circulation, often getting over 100F under the studio lights. Actors liked going outside for some fresh air, but it often reeked of garbage from next door and of vehicle exhaust from the freeway nearby. It's understandable that she and others would think it was an unhealthy place to work but as others pointed out, the deaths were mostly due to factors unrelated to any potential contaminates at the studio. If she's the seed of the conspiracy theory, it would be a bit extra funny given that she also does stunt work in addition to acting. She also ended up as the head of the studio after marrying JMS (they've since divorced).
>>218340815>>218341398Congratulations, your retarded mindset gave us modern streaming. We used to have a clear, rational format hierarchy: episodic TV, serialised miniseries, singular movie. Each filled a niche and allowed different kinds of stories to be told. Then an unholy alliance of "hurr durr muh continuity" serialisationfags like you and pretentious movie actors who wanted nice steady TV cheques without upsetting their tiny-peen egos killed episodic TV and the result is a strictly worse entertainment landscape. Instead of television being dozens of series in every mainstream genre and several in niche genres, each pumping out many seasons, each season containing some good, some bad, and a few great episodes, your mentality has just compressed the same ratio of good/bad/awesome into a much smaller number of much more expensive productions. YOU(via driving the market with your expressed preferences) are responsible for nutrek being so shit that people started going back and trying to find 90's sci-fi like B5 to watch in the first place. The reality is you don't get a JMS making a B5 often. 99% of writers and showrunners are simply not capable of producing that kind of consistent quality over the entire run of a multiseason show, that's what miniseries were for in the old system, to provide a serialised format that most writers & showrunners were capable of producing at reasonable levels of quality.

So I can 100% imagine people missing details. G'Kars face shows it poorly when they added cuts or wounds.
>>218351247Saw him in an episode of 'Sliders'. Came off completely flat. Don't know if any of his other roles were good but he sure played Londo well. Andreas Katsulas however was great in everything I saw him in.

>>218340004I also entirely agree with Koenig in Bester being his best role and sadly one completely overlooked.
>>218344608>The best part about Babylon 5 is how fucking kino it still managed to be.It's mindblowing to me how writing the entire thing before filming didn't become standard after B5.
>>218348432Bit harsh, anon. I'm not as down on episodic TV as that poster is, but no one's to blame for shitty current-year serialised TV except jews. (And, OK, the good goys who still pay to access it.)>99% of writers and showrunners are simply not capable of producing that kind of consistent qualityMaybe. But to be hired in Hollywood you now effectively have to be at least three of the following...>jewish/non-white>female (or trans)>gay>living in LA>friends with/related to someone influential>willing to put propaganda above entertainment...which rules out nearly everyone on the planet who *might* be a potential JMS. Even if only 1% of writers (or wannabe writers) could hack it, or 0.001%, that's still a fuck-ton of people. But they insist on recruiting from only a tiny pool of the connected chosen and well-placed DEI pets. If only you knew how good things could be... in a world not run by them.
>>218351342you have to keep in mind episodic was still the name of the game for tv shows
>>218341629This is because they told stracynzki season 4 was the last, so It kinda compressed things then season 5 was greenlighted so he had to fill It with something. But the series had a more or less complete series arc before temp 1 ended. Other things that warranted changes was the actor for sinclair and his illness.
You guys are alright. Don't go to Z'ha'dum tomorrow.
>>218351325Happy for him too as I know he had trouble with typecasting following his Trek character. I know it's still sci-fi but it's different enough of a role for him to show his ability.Great acting, great writing.
>>218340815Rewatching b5 today the similarities seem a lot less meaningful. The strength of star trek is the episodic format allowing for really well writting one shots. The visitor and inner light are probably better than any episode in b5 even though the latter has a stronger story and character development overall.

>>218351768>>218351841I loved it. JMS kept everything very mysterious and doled it out little at a time. The best thing though was that you could trust that he had thought it out and had behind the scenes answers plus consistency. So when things related to it happened in far apart episodes, you could piece it together. Now that's all been turned into empty mystery boxes so writers don't have to think, just come up with junk on the fly, and let fans make up their own answers.

>>218353488not that similar BUT some of the best moments of BSG 2004 you will see were heavily inspired by, if not fully ripped from B5. for example when the Galactica jumped into the atmosphere that one time, I thought it was the most awesome thing ever, but B5 did it first

Trek had to follow the "no human conflict" bullshit so you don't get the reality of some situations. Homefront/Paradise Lost should have straight up had Starfleet on Starfleet attacks, not just half assed stuff. They even had General Hague stolen away for it.

>>218357887I wouldn't bother. The pilot and first couple of seasons are really good. the problem is you will then have to watch the rest, which is so bad it retroactively ruins most of what was good about the first half.now before someone butts in and makes some idiotic comments about me not being able to handle religion in my science fiction, that is not why I think the show finishes horribly. it was just executed badly on every possiblr level.
>>218357887It's a miserable show, I would definitely not watch it if you don't want to be made even more depressed.

>>218357961I'm kind of with you. BSG just isn't hitting the way my friends have been telling me for years. It's quite distracting how much 9/11 takes a toll on the plot, slapping that knockoff WTC firefighters pic every time they exit the pilot's meeting room. It's great, don't get me wrong, just annoying little things hidden even in season 1. The miniseries was great though & you can easily see why it was picked up.

>>218357515>>218357881I think it was a couple of reasons, first they were lonely and missed the older races that had moved on. They were too far advanced to have any meaningful interaction with the younger races.Second they were burnt out and tired of their jobs being the galactic babysitters. One just wanted to groom us like an over protective parent and the other just wanted to throw us into a gladiator arena and see which one came out alive. This worked when we were truly in our infancy but once the races had grown up it caused problems and it took the great war to get the parents to see the children were able to handle life outside the nest. It also helped that the old ones came back, if they hadn't shown up I doubt it would have worked out. They finally saw that they weren't needed anymore and could move on themselves and go where they always wanted to be.
>>218358121yeah but what specifically happened in the b5 cycle that people didn't do in all the other past cycles in the vorlon-shadow war? you're telling me that sheridan was the first person to unite the galaxy?
Was this the show where they give half the cast AIDS?
>>218354444I would have liked to have gotten to fix her.
>>218358148The races didn't have technology powerful enough to get the vorlons and shadows to even notice them. They were more like the generational wipes of the reapers but on a lesser scale. And the old ones didn't come back presumably to pick up their bros they left behind.

>>218358404Between Grease and Taxi, Jeff Conway was probably the most famous cast member pre-B5 airing. He'd already tanked his career by then, but he was still the most recognizable. Bill Mummy was a huge child star, but I think this was his first adult. Bruce had four seasons on Scarecrow and Ms. King. >>218357526Mass Effect tried hard to rip-off Babylon 5 and failed miserably. Fucking Canadians.
>>218360740They copied a lot of stuff, B5, Trek, Star Control, etc. Plebs will never notice.
>>218360740It was almost impossible to watch B5 without the discs for so long that I think you're on to something. They wanted people to focus on the ST connection so they wouldn't see that nearly all of ME's storyline rips it off. And I say that as someone who likes ME a lot too, just going to imagine it as the B5 game adaptation that got cancelled actually coming out.
>>218360836Literally everything in mass effect came directly from Star Control 2 and the few things that didn’t were just shit.
>>218358825Boxleitner was solid but I wouldn't call him a good actor. I think O'Hara was better, but he got to play a more psychologically complex character, whereas Boxleitner played the upright Yankee hero. Mira Furlam, Katsulas and Jurassic were the good actors. Doyle was also solid. The rest were not good. Of the main cast that is

>>218354689Nothing makes a man bitter faster than being rejected by a slut with low standards.>>218354444Anons sometimes criticize her acting abilities in B5 threads but that she's such a different person from her character shows she has some ability. It's not uncommon for an acclaimed actor to turn out to be basically playing themself in most of their roles.
>>218360836I'm pretty sure you were supposed to notice how they deliberately move through homage sci-fi eras in every game.
>>218357413The trek shit, especially DS9 stuff, is just low effort dopamine farming. The tranny stuff, while annoying, is a bit more in-bounds considering JMS wanted Delenn to be a tranny and his other shows have been focused on them. Trying to relate a 90s show to contemporary politics is where things really go off the rails and should be squashed.
>>218358374From a "early death" angle, like Doyle, Conaway had addiction problems that caught up with him. The production tried to make the most of its limited budget and sometimes that included getting better talent than they should have been able to afford because those actors had other issues that made them undesirable to the bigger studios.

>bester>is the best character Bravo Extrahacski.
>>218358121>>218358148>>218358187Before Sheridan, the races capitulated in the 1000 year cycle of war between the Vorlons and the Shadows because they knew no better. They didn't really understand who and what the Vorlons and Shadows were and what they were actually doing. Which was trying to mold the younger races into mini versions of each of their respective beliefs, instead of just being actual baby sitters, letting us grow on our own with gentle nudges and guard rails if we did something stupid. They made it personal to each of their beliefs and were hell bent on continui9ng an endless cycle until one sides beliefs prevailed. Sheridan, with the help of Drall and the great machine, created the crucible of galactic war with all of the younger races and the Vorlons and the Shadows and then used Drall and the machine to let every one see, in their minds, what was actually going on 'behind the scenes'. Once we all knew, we said 'yeah fuck you both' as evienced, no only to the viewers, but to the Vorlons and shadows as well, when the younger race fleet just jumped in front of Shadow missiles to defend. They (v/s) new then, they lost. Both lost. They could no longer deceive us into going along with this any longer and with the other remaining old ones coming into the fray as well, something that had never happened before. They (v/s) basically said, "ok, well, whatever, guess its over, we'll fuck off now".
>>218363604Well said, it's a shame mass effect couldn't have done something like that. Even if it was a direct rip off it would have been way better than what we got.

>>218364853Citizen G'Kar is best G'Kar. His great storytelling ability was definitely foreshadowed in Parliament of Dreams (S01E05) when he tells Catharine Sakai about Sigma 957 and the ant on his finger.
>>218362512I think fan reaction to her would be different if JMS had the Ivanova/Talia romance play out on screen and remain throughout the series.
>>218365092That was a great scene, really set the tone for the show. Gave the old ones a real air of mystique and awe.
>>218361391Boxleitner grew into the role and it really showed toward the end. As his character became more sophisticated, he became a better actor. The most notable example of this is after the war, when Earth is deciding what to do with him, whether to be taken out back and shot for desertion and treason, or to be awarded all the medals and promoted, he finangles for a pardon for all his staff, gets it in writing, and then militarily agrees to quietly disappear so the new powers of earth don't need to deal with his new galactic hero star power. He steps down publicly and militarily to appease the new earth political apparatus, but then takes the extremely public role of running the galactic alien cooperation political and military apparatus and infuriates earth to the point they want the pardons for his staff back because earth wants revenge. But he kept copies in safe places. It's a very duplicitous thing, very game of thrones, very political for Boxleitner. Not something a boy scout would do.
>>218365214And knowing that, it made it all the more potent when Sheridan told them to fuck off. And they did.
>>218365254>Not something a boy scout would do.the pejorative of "boy scout" is someone who does what is objectively right no matter what
>>218365320He was playing earth the whole time and he knew it. He kept his cards close to his chest on purpose. It was a 4D chess move. A proper boy scout would have faced the music and disappeared. But the actor and the character grew and evolved and played politic. Stepped down publicly and made earth happy, when behind the scenes had a backup plan, then very publicly takes control of the new superpower and the White star fleet, infuriating earth (but earth couldn't do anything about it). By any metric it was underhanded and not fair dealing. But the audience liked it because the audience is with Sheridan, not with Earth.
The ending of Deconstruction of Falling Stars is what I imagine leaving this place would be like when 4chan eventually shuts down. I enter my encounter suit for the final time, my true self never to emerge again as I vanish into the darkness between galaxies that is the normalfag internet.
>>218365092Honourable mention goes to Neroon. He was an excellent foil to Delenn, and yet when he saw for himself that her formidability came from the love others had for her, he couldn't compete with that and stepped aside.
>>218365400It will never cease to be awe inspiring to me that babylon 5 had not one but two good endings when most stories have none. The last episode of season 4 and 5 both can serve as the ending of the show and both are just as good. It really was a once in a generation miracle.
>>218365377He knew earth was in the wrong. "boy scouts" aren't restricted from playing all the angles.
>>218365400There is always the hope of a Babylon 6 or NextChan.
>>218363721>>218363781The Carmine Falcone monologue in Batman Begins for me. The delivery was a bit rushed, I'd have preferred that Tom Wilkinson pause between points to really ratchet up the tension, to reeeeeeally let Bruce Wayne realize he's in absolute life or death danger. He's not Batman at this point, just a really, really angry teenager with a bone to pick. Thinks taking a punch is toughness. He's literally having it explained to him, to his face, with a gun pointed at him that he could have his brains blown out at a whim, in full view of the public, and no one would question it. A room full of cops and judges and this guy can shoot the richest, most famous kid in the city and get away with it.That's some "he shot himself in the back of the head four times, from the inside of a locked duffle bag - must have been suicide" shit.

>>218365553I always skip to the last 4-5 episodes of S5 after the 1st 4. The whole Teep war thing is boring asf and I think handled poorly/rushed/should have been woven into earler season episodes etc al. Also Lochley is a poor replacement for Ivanova hands down. When the writer has to include in the script that "The new captain ain't so bad"...yeah...Fuck off JMS for that one you messed up.
>>218365776The teep war arc was rushed. Not bad. It should have been a slow burn.
>>218365776well nigger, they told him season 4 would be the last, then demanded a season 5, which he had to furiously yank out of his ass.
>>218340004Read some of the books OP. There's a book called "To Dream in the City of Sorrows" that explains what Sinclair did between seasons 2 and 3, and how he got the scar on his cheek that you see in War Without End, and it explains what happened to Catherine. The Psi Corps trilogy I'd also recommend because it's almost entirely about Bester, the Psi Cop. The first book begins with the discovery of telepaths and the hundred or so years that follows, and ends shortly after Bester is born. The second book cover's Bester from age 6 to right as he's leaving for Babylon 5 to deal with Jason Ironheart in season 1's Mind War. The third book is set after the events of both Babylon 5 and Crusade, so wait until after you finish the show for that one, but it's great.A fun tidbit, not sure if you've ever noticed but in every single scene Bester is in in the show, his right hand is always clenched in a fist. The second Psi Corps book explains why!

>>218340412>strong female character that has actual emotions and flaws. They used to do this all the time in the 80's and 90's. Female characters could be competent, capable, admirable role models without being stripped of their feminity. They could be strong while still being emotionally vulnerable. Then feminism came along telling us that patriarchy ran the world and that hollywood only wrote women as sex objects. And now what we once had has been replaced by the 'girlboss' - a woman written with no feminine qualities, as if she's a testosterone powered man, telling women the only way they can be powerful is to have no emotions (spoiler, real women have a lot of emotions) and to act like men. Thanks, feminism.
