There's no detail about it. He just captures a lot of feelings really well.
Yeah, he clearly dabbles in pastiche to convey himself sometimes, but I think it works and ends up being very beautiful.

*stab*
>>
>>218344516
i went in with a true desire to like his films. i am just unable to do it.
it goes beyond pastiche. to use the lost highway example he even admitted he had to do all of the editing himself bc it wouldnt be possible for anyone else to have any idea what was going on except himself. how is that art? how is that impact? how is that anything?

he just creates some visuals that do look cool, slaps them all together and then sits back acting like its deep. then a bunch of reddit faggots try to retroactively apply meaning to his incoherent slop to show how enormous brained they are

it fucking sucks man.

what's wrong with this? genuinely asking
montage is important in filmmaking, a director that edits his own film to make it fit his Vision is not a far fetched concept
>>
>>218344633
>he even admitted he had to do all of the editing himself bc it wouldnt be possible for anyone else to have any idea what was going on except himself.
I've never seen an interview where he said this, but it seems you're taking a very bad faith interpretation of it. If he's doing something that's surrealist, wouldn't it be natural for him to want to sequence and edit the different shots himself? It just seems like he felt like the pre-edited shots wouldn't be able to convey themselves to an editor and decided to do it himself.

i am glad my halfwit take has assblasted you faggots enough into derailing the thread into actually talking about film lol

first of all, it is widely known and accepted that lynch edited lost highway. he talks about it in pretty as a picture: the art of david lynch. i am not taking a bad faith interpretation of it either, i dont remember the exact quotes but it was something along the lines of only him knowing how everything was supposed to go so thats why he led the editing effort himself.

i "get" all there is to "get" with his work. what i do not get is the appeal. he creates some great visuals i will give him that, beyond that he is one of the most overrated directors there is. he is truly the reddit version of arthouse - im not wrong

Yeah. It's about the clash between desire on paper against desire in practice. Erika claims to want transgression, but it's the symbolic/semantic relationship built in the process of craving something that she covets, as opposed to the actual exertion of sexual violence upon her body. And Benoit Magimel's character in turn uses that as a catalyst for his own voyeuristic fantasy.

But I wouldn't know. I've never seen a movie before. I don't even know what that is.

lol this wasnt a good movie at all, fucking Vincent Canby, I'll never trust him again.

I can see their angle of Boss Nigger being a parody of Clint Eastwood in High Plains Drifter, but the Boss is less justified and more obnoxious. He declares himself sheriff and uses his position to harass and steal, his motivations are petty. The main difference with the villain of the movie (one of Schwarzenegger's LA gym friends/stunt guy) is that the bad guy kills a kid. And director Jack Arnold has much better movies in the 1950s. 3/10 for the catchy song.

>Fellini, Kurosawa, and Bunuel move in the same field as Tarkovsky. Antonioni was on his way, but expired, suffocated by his own tediousness.
>He’s done two masterpieces, you don’t have to bother with the rest. One is Blow-Up (1966), which I’ve seen many times, and the other is La Notte (1961), also a wonderful film, although that’s mostly because of the young Jeanne Moreau. In my collection I have a copy of Il Grido (1957) and damn what a boring movie it is. So devilishly sad, I mean. You know, Antonioni never really learned the trade. He concentrated on single images, never realizing that film is a rhythmic flow of images, a movement. Sure, there are brilliant moments in his films. But I don’t feel anything for L’Avventura (1960), for example. Only indifference. I never understood why Antonioni was so incredibly applauded.

Kawase’s Koma (Japan, 34min), Kang Jun-Il travels to a village in rural Japan to honour his grandfather’s dying wish by returning a Buddhist scroll to its ancestral home. Amid ancient superstitions, a new relationship forms.

Hong Sang-Soo’s Lost in the Mountains (South Korea, 32min) the visitor is the supremely self-centred Mi-Sook, who drives to Jeonju on impulse to see her classmate Jin-Young – only to discover that her friend is having an affair with their married professor, who Mi-Sook once dated herself. The level of social embarrassment goes off the scale. In Naomi

And in Lav Diaz’ Butterflies Have No Memories (Philippines, 42min) ‘homecoming queen’ Carol returns to the economically depressed former mining town she came from – and becomes the target of an absurd kidnapping plot hatched by resentful locals. Serving as his own writer, cameraman and editor, Diaz casts the film entirely from members of his crew and delivers a well-seasoned mix of social realism and fantasy.

This is parody right?
>Does it naturalize rural poverty?
>Does it present suffering as timeless rather than historically produced?
>Does it frame dignity as individual endurance rather than collective change?
These are valid critiques. Saying love is a bourgeois construct is ultra nonsense.

I've never seen ichi the witch. Even though we are in /film/, in my opinion books are the superior medium. They allow the reader to use their imagination more. Films are generally going to be more explicit. So if one makes a film it is better to withhold.

‘The system‘ can account for some of the director's failures and frustrations. But it does not help us to understand or appreciate his successes. The accepted image of ‘Hollywood’, graveyard of artistic integrity and creative ambition, is the product of some notable martyrdoms: Von Stroheim, Stemberg, Eisenstein, Welles. . . .

But it does not take account of the large number of directors who functioned superbly within the commercial framework when it was at its most restricting: Ford, Vidor, Hitchcock, Preminger, Hawks, Boetticher, Fuller . . .
