It's an inherent cost of the open access and anonymous format of imageboards. It's great for people who are maybe a bit different or simply want to be candid, but unfortunately it's also great for weird freaks who like to be loathsome and obnoxious all the time.
>>
>>218408690
>it's also great for weird freaks who like to be loathsome and obnoxious all the time.
I feel like it's got way worse recently though.
Maybe my mind has blocked it out but I don't remember there being this many schizos here 10+ years ago. Literally every general on literally every board will have at least one schizo who is absolutely determined to ruin the thread for everyone else. Some boards like /vg/ have 3 or more per general. It's insane.
Maybe it's just a result of the site growing and becoming more popular. Maybe it's a result of mental health conditions increasing in Western nations. Maybe it's something else. Either way it's fucking annoying.

Alucarda, Satanico Pandemonium (your pic), and To the Devil, a Daughter all come to mind, though Alucarda is the best nunsploitaton imo… it's classic Mexican trash in the best way possible. I probably watched the music video on Youtube over a hundred times back when I first saw it:
https://youtu.be/5314Ekhu_nA
Also for anyone interested, here's a good quality DVDrip of Alucarda I uploaded back in 2024 to share here, since there are lots of janky rips floating around:
https://mega.nz/file/Bew0VDaI#S4MSlLG_PTXKOmOdN6BGd5lseg6OD33mYeIbM9tcQvQ
I'm pretty sure The Devils is great as well but I haven't gotten around to that one yet. The First Omen is a great modern entry. Might as well also mention The Nun for fellow Farmigabros even if it's not as good as anything else I just mentioned.

>>218408895
Seconding all of these; I finally watched Black Narcissus early this morning and it is nothing short of stellar. Deborah Kerr from The Innocents and Kathleen Byron both kill it, but Byron is the clear standout and truly embodies the I Could Have Saved Her trope. There's also a 3-hour series based on the same book starring two favorites (Gemma Arterton & Aisling Franciosi) but I've got a feeling it doesn't come close to Powell and Pressburger's vision.

This wasn't quite as good as I was expecting after the praise I heard of it here, but it's nowhere near as bad as other reviews would suggest. I do love it when films take creative liberties with how computers and the internet works. I also appreciated that this one had a bad end. You don't see enough of that.

It's a shame Alyson Walker seems to have quit acting. She a cute.

Williamson veto'd other Miramax directors like Robert Rodriguez, possibly even Tarantino himself, because they all interpreted the script as being for a parody film. Craven was actually approached as the first and initially said no until a fan at some con told him he thought he had gone too soft after the release of Vampire in Brooklyn so when they asked him a second time to direct he took the job. Scream would've been a very different film without Craven who had already directed a similar meta horror film with New Nightmare two years prior. Scream satirizes but it never parodies that is Scary Movie's job.

Mildly entertaining and Samara Weaving is nice to watch (although her trademark scream started to get annoying by the end). I don't know what to expect from the sequel that's coming out soon since it doesn't seem like the kind of story that lends to a part 2, but I guess they always find a way.

I was distracted the whole time by how ugly the movie was shot though. Terrible lighting and an ugly brown/orange filter over everything. I don't know what these directors are thinking with this shit, but a lot of modern movies suffer from it.

It's why horror shit that's not supernatural bullshit usually a joke because Michael Myers, Jason, Freddy, etc it makes sense they keep coming back because they really can't be killed. Unfortunately, the best horror shit is usually humans doing fucked up shit because in reality it can actually happen like Hostel and SAW. Like do we really need 20 different sequels to Scream when the killer always fucking dies in the end anway? What fucked up universe do they live in where people still willingly want to be the Scream killer when they know all the previous killers all end up fucking dead? It's so retarded.

It seems like horror sequels seem to work best when they completely change up the tone and scenario. Things like Don't Breathe 2, Black Phone 2, and Aliens are not as good as the first in their series, but they manage to not be boring since they are not simple rehashes.

Normally with a story like this, it would be the same premise but with a different family that had made the deal with the Devil, but since this has Samara's character again, it seems kind of ridiculous. These movies are not really my thing but I can understand the appeal. They're clear love letters to low budget exploitation cinema with homages to all the big classic slashers everywhere, but they're also very nasty, vile and mean spirited so they aren't gonna be for everyone. Leone pulls no punches even kids and babies (the latter only in AHE) aren't safe from getting murdered and dismaimed, the only restraint he's capable of is having the decency to not show the kids get killed in graphic detail directly by Art but you'll still see their severed body parts on full display. Art being a bit silly and the kills being over the top doesn't make them comedies and they lack the camp factor of other splatterfests like Peter Jackson's early films. But in the era of CGI blood and gore they really make you appreciate the technique and craftsmanship behind cheap but good looking practical effects.

AHE is incredibly cheap looking with some horrendous acting, but the VHS segments are made to look like they were shot on actual film but still look too digitally clean.

Terrifier 1 might be trashy low budget exploitation distilled into its purest essence: characterization and plot take a backseat to people getting brutally slaughtered just to show off practical gore SFX, all the hot scantily clad bitches that can't act their way out of a wet paperbag, characters acting like complete morons pretty much every step of the way, even some nice full frontal nudity and it has that distinct 70s/80s inspired grindhouse aesthetics and cinematography and music, much better looking than AHE.

T2 keeps the 80s synth tracks and grindhouse look and attempts to have a plot and slightly deeper characters. Lauren LaVera can act better than anyone from the first film and she has a smoking hot body that Leone for whatever reason decided not to show us the goods in the shower scene which goes against the spirit of exploitation idk what changed his mind when he already gave us bare tits in the first.

Characters act less stupid in the sequels but remember there’s a difference between acting stupidly and acting irrationally these two often gets conflated by moviegoers who are used to seeing Rambo types that always keeps a cool head. T3 expands the lore a little from the second film and gives more focus to Art’s demon accomplice, but it completely ditches the grindhouse aesthetics of the first two so now everything looks too clean and digital idk what he was thinking with this one either. We very briefly see a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it nipple shot as a girl gets chainsawed through her tits but that’s as far as the nudity goes.

For some reason during the brutal opening with the slaying of little children Art actually yells twice which he never does again at any other point in the movie even when he gets stabbed and slashed. The random five year time jump between 2 and 3 and the introduction of Gabbie is clearly because Jonathan’s actor had a massive growth spurt in the two years between and Leone wants Sienna to be the caretaker and protector of a little kid, but even though the actor wasn’t very good I still cared enough about him that I think he was completely wasted here and he didn't deserve getting killed offscreen. The climax in general felt rushed compared to 2 and also not keeping santa outfit on.

I do appreciate Sienna not just being another girlboss. The couple of times she overpowers Art in both movies almost seems like he lets her just to see what would happen as he easily overpowers her almost immediately afterwards and the sword is clearly magical in nature but she actually struggles a ton in all her fights against Art. I will watch the 4th film only if it actually ends the story.

Besides the practical SFX the soundtracks of these movies are surprisingly pretty good there are actually some real bangers in them. And props to David Howard Thornton for his performance as Art even if he is a political fag.
>>
>>218416614
>Leone for whatever reason decided not to show us the goods in the shower scene
it was a sell out move, sexless zoomers and critics don't want nudity in movies anymore. you can hack a woman into tiny chunks but don't DARE show her breasts you creep.

Terrifier 1 is good, 2 and 3 are terrible aside from the gore effects. Damien Leone can't write or direct worth shit.

Anon despite what you may think there's a reason the series didn't blow up until T2. Leone clearly made the right call by not just remaking T1 again. He doesn't attempt to write above his skill ceiling it's a simple story with simple characters and some minor straightforward symbolism and it resonated with audiences beyond just the niche gorehounds.

The first movie got people interested enough to fund a kickstarter project, and then dishonest marketing and a dearth of horror competition made T2 a guaranteed success, especially for its low budget
>he doesn't attempt to write above his skill ceiling it's a simple story with simple characters
He made the movie almost 3 fucking hours long just filled with that shitty writing and acting, with like 10 minutes of entertaining gore scenes. He took his own writing way more seriously than that type of movie called for. A real "love letter to old slashers" would be about 90 minutes with attention paid to pacing and giving the audience what it wants first and foremost

Do you guys prefer when a slasher has a signature weapon like Michael Meyers or Ghostface or do you prefer when a slasher uses a variety of weapons like Jason or Art?
>>
>>218417629
Jason's signature weapon is a machete
>>
>>218417629
Variety. One thing I noticed during Scream 7 was that the kills were at least marginally interesting, most of the franchises murders are boring. A slasher by its nature should be focused more than anything else on having interesting kill scenes as much as a musical should want good songs.
>>

I think the more subtle aspects of horror just goes over the heads of most people desu. If you ask the people in the camp that doesn't consider Silence of the Lambs horror they will usually always point to Lecter's escape and the head in a jar as the ONLY two horror scenes in the entire movie, maybe they will also count the night vision goggles scene too on a good day, but ask anyone who do consider it horror and you'll realize Lecter's interrogation of Clarice is also supposed to be scary because of the way it's set up, shot and acted. As soon as Clarice is shown the photo of the nurse whose face Lecter ate along with Chilton's chilling description, though never shown directly to us, our imagination fills in the blanks and together with his very first scene immediately after props up Lecter as a movie monster rather than just a simple serial killer and his elaborate escape scene only further cements this. His presence is felt throughout the entire film despite the lack of screen time because of the way other characters talk about him. Hannibal is in many ways comparable to both the shark in Jaws and Norman Bates in Psycho and most people actually agree that his impact and scariness is lessened in the sequels where he has far more screen time. It's not just about Lecter though stuff like "it places the lotion in the basket" is also shot as a scary scene for example.

My distinction between thriller and horror has always been that horror puts you in the POV of the potential victim, and thrillers place you in the POV of someone hunting the threat or rescuing the victim. SotL does kind of blur this line, but in the end a horror version of it puts you in Catherine Martin's shoes, not Clarice Starling's.

>>
>>218419129
Those don't even run the risk of running into horror territory, same way Tucker and Dale vs Evil might but High School High wouldn't. There can be overlaps between thriller and horror but they're also totally individual things.
>>
>>218419163
of course, I just mean he's the victim being chased helplessly in that film.
I don't have any rules. death, darkness, fear, violence and gore, helplessness, supernatural etc. I know it when I see it.
people are most generous to the horror themed comedy end of things. which personally I don't mind.
>>
>>218419106
I've seen this reasoning being used before, but I think it's attempting to generalize and over simplify while ignoring any nuances that may or may not exist when the nature of genres is frequently more complicated than that. SotL is the quintessential example of the horror thriller, because while the plot may be that of your typical detective thriller and the killer gets captured/killed by the hero who saves the day in the end ultimately it's the presence of Lecter that makes it more than just a thriller though I'd argue that just being a scary movie should also be enough for it to be considered horror but I guess not. There's no point to Lecter escaping and calling Clarice up as she's celebrating to let her know he's still out there and is free to eat new victims again because the movie ends before that plot thread has a chance to get resolved. Thomas Harris didn't even want it to be resolved which is why he waited 11 years before writing his followup. The novel won horror related awards including the second ever main category Bram Stoker Award and Jonathan Demme has stated in interviews he was inspired by both Psycho and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre when he made it and wanted it to be the scariest movie since Psycho. The only reason why the movie doesn't provide graphic explicit detail with most of the violence as your typical horror films from the 80s is actually because of Psycho and TCM as he wanted to minimize the risk of walkouts in the theater for being too gory for mainstream audiences. It clearly worked out in the end even better than he could've hoped for.
>>
>>218419479
