I watched one last Dieterle: his third biopic for Warner with Paul Muni, Muni as Benito Juarez. Dieterle was the liberal-guy-go-to for these progressive biopics and in this case they LARP Juarez as the mexican Lincoln, with stovepipe hat and all (maybe this is based on the historical record, I don't know).The movie is a weird mix of lots of little accurate historical details and silly Hollywood morals. They have Louis Napoleon as a full comic character riding a wooden pony (his third appearance in a Dieterle movie), Maximilian as a noble idiot (that's how many historians portray him tobehonest) and Juarez with the vitality of a marble bust.It features a scene where Juarez teaches Porfirio Diaz about the importance of democracy that had me rolling with laughter. Fucking Porfirio Diaz!tl;dr great cinematography / 10, which is mostly why I enjoy these movies
