why is no one talking about this movie?? just watched it and was blown away. talk about a hidden gem
>>
>>218410235
We talked about it when it released. I was very surprised that Zach Cregger was an actual filmmaker and not just a director. Then I learned David Fincher worked with him to teach him how to edit and Zach actually listened. Then I wasn't so surprised anymore.

Truly a great film. There's so much to analyze. I hope the community is revisited so we can get an answer for why the Feds didn't get involved with 17 missing children.

Also, fuck witches. Hamnet and Weapons should have had the same climax. Total witch death now.
>>
>>218410235
We didn't talk about it because it was fucking trash.
>>
>why is no one talking about this movie?
horror/mystery is really not that popular as people here might think and you are quite late to the party (incels don't like to hear this but most things only have value at release when it's still fresh and relevant, nobody is waiting for your lazy ass to watch it a year later and expect some live discussion)
I still enjoyed it tho, it taps into different things like psychological horror, is there anything scarier than an angry mob of midwits ready to lynch someone just because they need a scapegoat?
>>
>>218410351
you are the midwit
>>
>>218410345
This. True horror comes from shit that’s plausible, not ‘muh witch did it with magic powers’.
From the position of a horror cognoscenti, ‘Weapons’ is as spiritually and morally vapid as Sharknado.
>>
>>218410367

>>
this place is full of fucking chatgpt bots lmao. OP can say something retarded or jocular and you will still get plenty of people talking talking with a straight face as if it really happened
>>
The ending was dumb and felt like a reshoot that undercut the whole story/allegory. Directors lately are dangerously afraid of an unhappy ending and it is ruining horror.
>>
>>218410235
it's shit, and was also substantially changed to make it more commercial.
all marketing zero meaning.
>>
>>218410310
Speaking of witched, The VVitch should have ended exactly 2 minutes earlier than it does. It turns a mid-tier movie into a fucking masterpiece if you just cut from the walking into the forest" shot to credits.
>>
>>218410235
The plot revolves around the cops, really the entire country, not actually giving a fuck that the kids went missing. All the kids did was run out the door straight to the house, the dogs would have found them, anyone could have figured that out in no time if they actually tried.
>>
>>218410351
>anything scarier than an angry mob of midwits ready to lynch someone just because they need a scapegoat?
Nothing was going to happen to her

Zach said the original ending didn’t test well so he changed it. Can’t remember exactly what it was, but it was more grim than what they ended up doing. At least it wasn’t really a happy ending.

Yep, a child being forced to be an adult, and to care for adults, with suffering and death as the consequences. You must be a child yourself, not to see it.
>>
>>218410235
I liked it, but it's a movie that becomes less interesting and less ripe for discussion after you've seen it and everything is explained. Arguably it's less than the sum of its parts
>>

>>218410235
It's not as great as that. It's an okay watch with an okay plot. The way the storytelling is done is quite simplistic, which may be charming in a way for some. For others like me it can feel like things were brought to an abrupt end and we're left without answers. There isn't any explicit explanation we get as viewers.

>>218410468
>>218413880
I too wouldn't exactly call it a happy ending given the specific details that I won't spoil for anons here. But yeah, it was also not exactly an unhappy ending. That is a kind of resolution that's reached in the end.

>>
>>218410456

>>
>>218414445
I can see why people didn't like that ending, although I wouldn't be surprised if they had ended up liking it. This movie is the definition of average, in no particularly disparaging meaning of the term. Just very basic in all aspects and meant to be appealing to a wide group of people.
>>
>>218410235
It was talked about tons when it came out like a year ago
My main issue with the movie is it falls apart if you think about the premise for one minute. The cops would immediately get a warrant and search the homes of the two common threads on the case, being the teacher and the one student in the class that didn't go missing. And spoilers, it's case closed within 24 hours if they do that
Besides that, it is a well directed/shot/acted movie, and creative. But like most mystery box stuff the answer to the mystery is disappointing and it needs to forgo common sense a little too much to make the premise work
>>
>>218413786
they didn't check the underground with the almost 20 kids simply standing there, and thus ending the scheme inmediately
>>
>>218414264
>storytelling is done is quite simplistic
>There isn't any explicit explanation we get as viewers
I don't think you're qualified to make judgements about the quality of storytelling.
>>
>>218410235
this movie sucked. its scariest part was a jumpscare and half of the movie doesnt move the plot in any meaningful way or in a way that pays off. i would say zach needs to stick to sketch comedy but i doubt he would even be as funny. he 100% has trolls remorse going off the wkuk streams before trevor died

Perhaps the brutal head crushing kill would have been seen as too off-putting if it was done to a wife instead.
They didn't want to make people think of real life domestic/spousal violence, and there's kind of a sad double standard where you don't think of it as much if it's a gay couple

I'm going with this. They still play into the masculine and the feminine as the principle has a Mickey Mouse shirt and his fella has a Minnie Mouse shirt and it is the one in the Minnie shirt that invites the evil into the home (because this is a deeply Christian rooted movie, after all.)
>>
>>218410235
It's not good. It's not funny or scary. The atmosphere is wrong for either, it's not even clear it's supposed to be either. The broken narrative serves to limit suspense. Too many characters so you don't care about anyone, basically a major problem with all post diversity checklist products. The plot itself doesn't make sense as far as not getting caught immediately.
Oh yeah the cop getting stabbed by needles was funny.
>>
>>218415334
I think I am. I don't think you are qualified to assess criticisms of things you like maybe. There's a difference between storytelling that lets the viewer do some of the work and put together pieces of the puzzle, and what you see with Weapons. Where the story is simple (not much of a puzzle to solve there) and progresses in an easy to understand way without any explicit explanations, and which leaves you as the viewer with an unsated curiosity that had been building up since the start. Nothing is explained, no answers given, we learn nothing about Gladys or what exactly she had been doing or what her backstory is. The movie expects it to be self-evident and expects that level of depth, if you can call it that, to be enough for the viewer. So it leaves it there instead of building upon it, and that's what makes the movie simplistic. The format and storytelling is similar to what you'd see in children's bedtime stories that are supposed to start and end in the span of 10-15 minutes. They aren't supposed to be complicated. The stage is set, and the problem in the story arises and is then resolved shortly after. The story isn't fleshed out in any way, it's simple and basic. And that may well be something you like and enjoy, I already stated some people might feel there's a charm to things being simple like that. But it's not my cup of tea.
>>
>>218410403
No, a witch is fine, but the director has to have some basic respect for the idea of witchcraft and some interest in it, and it has to be written in a way that believably weaves this supernatural evil into a story that takes place in the world we live in. Hereditary, for example, succeeds at this. Weapons doesn't.

>movie so dull that anons would rather bicker about their interpretations of superficial symbology than discuss it
Gladys was a great villain but the ending was super anticlimactic after a slow burn that rivalled BCS. Methhead was unnecessary, could tell they wrote him in just to invent a reason to explore the house from a different character's perspective before the final act.
And they never really delve into the workings of the strange spiky plant. Of course they played the nature documentary on the TV when Gladys shows up at the gaybros' house, but is it a self-propagating organism like the Cordyceps fungus that has selected Gladys to spread its influence, or is its only her bloodline who can use the plant and thus how Alex can use it against her?
There's a whole lot of tension-building between Justine being ostracized and confronted, the dream sequence & the cop's AIDs scare but the jumpscares are foreshadowed and kinda weak, there's no payoff. Feels like a 10 year old's first horror movie, except for the sex & gore.

>Methhead was unnecessary, could tell they wrote him in just to invent a reason to explore the house from a different character's perspective before the final act.
No, the whole point of the methhead was so the cop would try to give the teacher AIDS, his wife would find out, and he would get kicked out of his house and need a reason to redeem himself alone instead of calling in backup.

Movie was shit
>the cop, the junkie and the principal had barely any connection to the missing kids. Their story segments could have been cut entirely
>Gladys for some reason was putting herself into peoples dreams
>Josh Brolin was onto something with the Ring Doorbell footage. He should have went to as many parents as possible, checked if they had some kind of Ring doorbell/security cameras, then determined which direction their kids were running in. Then took the info to the cops. Instead he did his house, another, then stopped
>annoying narration at the beginning and end of movie, we don't know who this narrator was
>after Gladys gets the kids to the house, she has them run out in the middle of the night because she knows the cops are coming in the morning. WHERE did the kids go? Why did nobody see them? When did they get back to the house?
>>
>>218420550
>Instead he did his house, another, then stopped
You don't need that many point to triangulate something, you only need 3 points, his, the school and the other one which is why he found the house after those 3 and didn't need to keep asking after that.
>>
>>218420572
>You don't need that many point to triangulate something, you only need 3 points, his, the school and the other one which is why he found the house after those 3 and didn't need to keep asking after that.
No, he should have done more. 2 houses could just be an odd coincidence, more data would have helped. If he did 5 houses and all their kids went in the same direction, it would have been a big break in the case. 2 houses wasn't enough to bring to the cops. That's what he should have done. It also would have gotten more parents involved. And I don't get why Justin Long and his wife didn't seem to care. A fellow parent of a missing kid might have a clue and they just don't give a shit? They don't want to check other parents cameras? They don't want the cops and FBI to know? It was so fucking stupid.
And I assume Gladys was using the kids to get better, but she looked the fucking same after the kids were having the life sucked out of them by her or whatever she was doing.

Why didn't she just mind control Justine instead of sending a guy running halfway across town? She had her hair, the bar for weaponization already seems low cause apparently a kid's hand-drawn name is enough despite her saying she needs "an object from each of their homes".
>>
>>218420675
This too. Why even show her cutting Justine's hair to not even use it? It's amazing how movies like this get praised nowadays. It was mediocre at best with lots of plotholes, but zoomers just buy into any hype.
>>
>>218420616
>2 houses could just be an odd coincidence, more data would have helped
But it wasn't, he had all the data he needed which is why he correctly identified the house they were in.
>>
>>218416190
This was so fucking dumb
>where did the kids go?
>they clearly had to stand still for hours because the cops came in the daytime, and the witch wouldn't have the kids run back to the house during daytime, so it's at least 15 hours
>then they ran back to Alex's house
So with the entire town on edge, Gladys had the kids run out of the house, stay in some magical place where they wouldn't be seen for 15 hours, then run back to the house....all without being seen by anyone
>>
>>218420713
>But it wasn't, he had all the data he needed which is why he correctly identified the house they were in.
Not enough for the cops. They would have thought he was a crazy parent playing detective. But if 5 houses showed footage of the kids running to that area (and Brolin didn't know the house in particular, Justine told him), the cops would have looked into it. And Brolin not going to the cops with this is fucking stupid.

I think the most unsettling scene in this movie for me (in a good way) is the scene where the posessed Principal runs across the grass in broad daylight to attack the teacher. You can sorta see his face is fucked up but you can't quite make out the details.

The dream-like vibe of that scene is remarkably similar to some nightmares I've had in the past.

Which is one of the reasons why horror these days is pure slop. Cinema in general, but horror particularly, ought to be challenging - it ought to be HORRIFYING. It ought to make you uncomfortable. It ought to disturb and disquiet you. But now everything is ruined by being test audienced to death. You don't create art by committee.

They didn't run the Wicker Man or the Exorcist through a test panel to see if they approved of it. Several films recently have very obviously been on the receiving end of clumsy studio interference regarding the ending - this, the Running Man and the Long Walk come to mind as well. It's like they don't trust audiences to deal with an unhappy or ambiguous ending.

A million percent. As a sober guy who really wasn't fucking sober at one point I appreciated the realism.

"Weapons" was good, but it wasn't great. It's just that 2025 was such an absolutely horrible year for movies that "Weapons" stood out.

If the Academy had any decency, they'd cut the awards show this year to 15 minutes and only give out 2 or 3 Oscars. The rest of them wouldn't be deserved. Not for 2025 movies.

A man and a woman can still be a couple even if some medical condition or disability prevents them from having sex the normal way

>it's like... just like a school shooting, those suburban white people are mindlessly blaming each other instead of sticking together and doing the right thing".
Schizo here, I interpreted it as hinting that school shootings are MK ULTRA false flags

Because it was overhyped and completely falls to pieces in the third act.

The power of true horror has always been the existential dread of facing forces who are unstoppable and undefeatable and come from another plane of existence that you can not hope to defeat. All horror that has a protagonist who defeats the forces of evil and wins the day is basically just capeshit.

Is this really what normalfags think peak filmmaking is? I heard it being praised but it was literally just a 5/10 dumb horror flick I won't even remember in a few months from now. I mean it was somewhat better than the usual generic slop you get from this genre, but seriously?

It's a genius and subtle metaphor, so it's understandable that you didn't get it at first. You see the assault rifle is a Weapon™ just like how the kids are used as Weapons™. Bravo Zach!
