the clue appears to be in the name...and that poster as well. Looks and sounds maudlin as fuck, were you expecting a comedy?
>>
you obviously haven't seen Melancholia or Manchester by the Sea then
>>

Melancholia wasn't depressing, it was boring.
>>
>>218413456
It is but I like to think of it more as a warning than just bleak nihilism. Don't become this dude. I have a low tolerance for pure doom-gazing movies, so other films like Von Trier's stuff put me off. At least this one has a message of some existential import.

it's my natural reaction to the first half of this film. yay, you dropped another name and read another book that was popular 20 years ago. you are sooo deep and sophisticated. two of the most insufferable characters in existence.

Most art / arthouse whatever you want to call them filmmakers are not intending their movies to be "deep" and "sophisticated". Most directors do weird shit or namedrop literature and whatever because they just think the weird shit is cool and also want to reference other shit they think is cool. Nobody thinks they're making an actual philosophical tractat or a puzzle to definitively solve when they're making a movie. Most of the people you think "look down on you" in fact don't have a "too good for this" attitute at all. Tarkovsky praised Terminator, Herzog acts in Tom Cruise action movies and Star Wars, etc. You're letting retarded film critics who apply the notions of "depth" and "sophistication" to guide you, this is performative closed-mindedness, you're the one who is being pretentious in the end "wow look at me I'm so down to Earth and common and know real life truth not this pretentious shit!". The movie in OP in fact couldn't be more straightforward by the end of it.

I swear Melancholia only exists because of the god-tier concept of this shot and von Trier worked backwards to write a movie around it

Depressing movies are tricky, because there's a thin line where, when crossed, it simply becomes boring

>>218413456
>Charlie Kaufmann yet again
This dude is clearly miserable at all times. If you didn't got that since Adaptation i don't know what were you expecting from this one
>>
this was more depressing. seeing this guys wife enable all his delusions until the final heart breaking scene where he fucking dies after chopping off his penis. it's basically 2 hours of seeing this guy get tortured by his demons and nobody lifting a finger to help him and instead pushing him farther and farther until he's destroyed
>>
>>218413456
The scariest and most depressing version of the future, worse than any dystopian or catastrophic depiction, especially if you are an autistic shut in.
>>
>>218413456
I only saw this movie once, when it came out almost six years ago, but I think about it pretty regularly. I'm pretty sure the janitor's life is exactly where I'm headed.

>>218422134
This is the standard "I'm measurably different experience"
Everybody around you tries to fuck with you just so see how badly you can break-down.
