Been binging a bunch of old sci fi movies like this, 12 Monkeys, Running Man, Total Recall, Escape from New York, etc. Any other shit that you guys would recommend? Doesn’t even have to be good.
Bladerunner is excellent
>>218421425I’ve seen that. I’m not even looking for recommendations for good movies. They can be bad as long as they’re somewhat interesting.
>>218421413demolition manvirtuosityjudge dreddstrange daysdark city
This is an often overlooked sci fi film. It's not a classic, but it's decent.I'd also recommend the original Planet of the Apes. It's a funny film where Charlton Heston overacts spectaclarly.
>>218421449Haven’t seen virtuosity or strange days. Thanks.
>>218421413Strange Days13th floorDark CityThe Matrix (obviously)GattacaHackers for the comfy CRT-core
>>218421459>>218421448Put these on the list.
>>218421471I’ve somehow never seen Hackers and I don’t know why.
>>218421520Hackers was not a hit when it released. It's only in recent times that it has attracted a cult following of "ironic" viewers. The film is very bad, but it does serve as a time capsule of a specific pop-cultural moment, and can be interesting for that reason.I remember seeing the cast of Hackers interviewed on the Big Breakfast, a British morning TV show. The host was openly ridiculing the film, because it had tried to make hackers look hip and cool, when in reality, he said, a hacker would be a sweaty nerd living in his mum's basement, and wouldn't have a chance of dating Angelina Jolie. That was the common perception of hackers in those days, and it helps to explain the film's failure.
>>218421413videodrome too but its pretty lewd
>>218421713Lewd doesn’t bother me.>>218421680I’m somewhat familiar with that. For some reason I figured it would’ve been on the loop on tv back in the day like how Independence Day was.
>>218421413War GamesChildren of MenMinority ReportMad Max 2
>>218421858Nah, it was nowhere near as popular as Independence Day. Not in the same ball park, the same town, or even the same continent as Independence Day.
>>218421902Yeah, but sometimes movies that weren’t that good would be aired on tv for some unknown reason.
>>218421879Haven’t seen War games. I’ll check it out

>>218421680Hackers is legitimately good. It is a highly stylized fantasy cyberpunk film. It is not intended to be realistic at all. Anyone who complains about it for being unrealistic is a dipshit.>Wizards aren't real so LoTR sucksThis is what you sound like.
>>218421413Unironically Mario Bros. movie.
>>218423188I love this movie.
>>218421413I have just the thing for you, anon - Dead Space, starring Bryan Cranston from Breaking Bad.
>>218423233I’ll check it out
>>218422417I second Tank Girl. What a ridiculous movie, comparable to Mad Max. I raise you Doomsday, from director of Descent, British version of Escape from New York.
>>218423183Hackers isn't bad because it's unrealistic. It's pretty boring for most of it, with only a couple funny quotable lines.
>>218421413>12 Monkeys, Running Man, Total Recall, Escape from New York>>218421449>demolition man>virtuosity>judge dredd>strange days>dark city>>218422454>Onions Green>Invasion of the Body Snatchers 70s>They Live>The Fifth Element>WaterWorldthese are all 30+, 40+ and even almost 50+ years old... Can you rec some new movies, they don't even have to be new, more like perhaps 5-10 years old
>>218423233Isn't this just a less interesting Forbidden World?
>>218423268I just like the aesthetic of older movies. Practical effects are fun.
>>218423268>Can you rec some new moviesNope.
>>218423183>Wizards aren't real so LoTR sucksThere's an obvious difference between depicting wizards in a long-ago medieval fantasy realm, and depicting hackers in 1995, with the intention of capturing the present cultural zeitgeist, and with the implication that what we're seeing is somewhat realistic. Your defence of Hackers is disingenuous. Imagine if a film made in 2026 portrayed TikTok users as totally cool and awesome, and fans of that film answered criticism with: "Uh it wasn't meant to be REALISTIC. Haven't you seen Lord of the Rings?" That would be a bit silly, wouldn't it?
>>218423268>5-10 years oldOof, now that's pretty tall order. There is a reason why anons recommend older thing. In past decadethere was Arrival, and I really enjoyed Ad Astra a very straight forward space scifi. I would also recommend Solaris from 2000s, older but it doesn't look dated. Maximum comfy in a way.
>>218423281Don't know what Forbidden World is but I bet yes.
>>218423349It depends how well it was done I guess. It's an abstraction. People get in fights in real life but are they flying through the air doing spinning kicks and shit? What does it FEEL like to be a super hacker hacking the planet? Why can't shit be heightened or stylistic? It's just cool.
Virtuosity
>>218423581>Why can't shit be heightened or stylistic?Maybe it can be. But in this particular film, the style made it lame and unintentionally funny.
>>218423439Don’t know shit about Forbidden World, but I sure as hell know Forbidden Planet

>>218423268Edge of Tomorrow and Oblivion fit the bill, they're fucking incredible films too. Both star Tom Cruise though, but he's great in both.Edge of Tomorrow is an edge of your seat thrill ride with great simple theme's, you don't have to overthink but its not stupid either.Oblivion is a mystery scifi that is much slower paced, but still high minded. Both had incredible cgi budgets and everything looks real even now. Also it probably doesn't count, but John Carter is also a great scifi fantasy film. I'm still mad how Disney sabotaged their own film, its frankly their last great movie they ever released, especially with a positive, relatively smart and confident, strong male MC.

>>218421413It's more recent but The Colony hits that niche
>>218421471This. I'd also suggest Akira, Ghost In The Shell, CyberCity Oedo and Perfect Blue. Yes they're all anime but 90's cyberpunk anime was peak sci fi and are nothing like the modern shit it's become.
>>218423268Go fuck yourself.
>>218423188If anyone today told me that a Super Mario Bros movie would have a decent dystopian cyberpunk aesthetic, I wouldn't have believed them.
>newFuck, I forget I literally just watched this last week. Gets points for some unique stuff but loses them for some stupid stuff. (like the effects crew have zero knowledge of geography)Comparable to Outlander (2008) which also reccing.
>>218423314>Practical effects are fun.Yup. Silent Running is boring as fuck, but I still watched it just for the aesthetic (I hate the Apple future look from newer movies) and ship models.
>>218425789how'd you bypass the tranny-janny word filters anon? wizardry....
>>218426298the sequel was okay aswell, better paced. The first one is a "watch it once before you die" kinda film, for sure, but while i found it interesting and memoriable, i didn't actually have FUN watching it.
>>218421413More classic 90's Keanu trash
>>218421413Split Second, nonsensical violent sci-fi starring rutger hauer. in the far future of 2008 london is flooded thanks to global warming, which means there's about 10cm of water on the ground everywhere
OP you should check out Gunhed. It has kind of similar vibe to those Terminator 1 dystopian future scenes.

>>218426362I'd add AD Police, but Perfect Blue has nothing to do with SF.
>>218423268Never watched picrel but it's recent scifi if you don't care about quality. There's also Chinaslop like The Wandering Earth
>>218427787I just try to sneak it in cause it's great.

Death Machine (1994) has interesting sci fi components.
Cypher (2002). It requires a mandatory second viewing to get all the tiny clues you missed on the first viewing
>>218427787If you're watching AD Police, may as well also watch Bubblegum Crisis/Crash too.
>>218428270The Jack Dante character is almost like the Joker from Batman. He reminds me of a goofier version of Heath Ledger’s Joker.
