Just saw this. What did I think of it?
>>
>>218454583
>the ghost is a metaphor for the refugee experience
Yep it's this.
>Sudanese refugees make it to England
>Government gives them a free home in a slum, stuff to start out with, and a stipend
>But the neighbors are all le racist because they don't smile at these poor refugees :(((
>Main characters start seeing visions and hallucinating memories of the horrors or whatever they saw in Sudan
>Decide house is haunted by some African witch spirit or whatever
>They hold an Afircan séance and find out the witch is actually MC's inner belief that he doesn't deserve the life he now has
>Then they have some real long hallucination they're back in Sudan and there's some Resident Evil 5 opening village shit going on
>Eventually work things out and they kill the witch to metaphorically accept the fact they're outsiders living in a foreign country and blah blah happily ever after
There was some decent cinematography. Typical Netflix high quality production levels. It relies heavily on jump scares, seems like it's targeted to the 13-20 year old demographic. It's the type of movie that might be entertaining to your average teenager or African adult. There wasn't too much political throat shoving outside of the neighbors doing "MICROAGGRESSIONS" against the protagonists (not smiling, "can't you speak English?" "I hope you're one of the GOOD ones!")
2/5 stars from me.

I stand by my statement that The Babadook was the single most damaging horror film. not only was it average at best, but it gave hollywood a metaphor template to churn out movies with.

Just finished Audition. Kino, I've seen a bunch of other Miike films and this one I can see lives up to the exxxtreme reputation he has.
People probably see it as feminist now but at the time in Japan I imagine it was culturally different. To me it's like one of those old violent children's fairy tales.
It first makes you feel for actresses as they display all their innocence and desperation and vulnerability. But the lead is also innocent and vulnerable blinded by love, he seems to be replaying conversations and imagining things more accurately in his mind as the film goes on.
She goes on my rare "ok not saveable" list alongside The Loved Ones Lola.

Dodgy 90s era CGI and acting aside this was a pretty decent. A lot of poorly received films from that era don't seem that bad compared to the quality of output of modern Hollywood. Any other disaster type horror movies worth watching out there? Not just animal horror in general but disaster specifically.

It was nothing like Blair Witch Project, Phoenix Forgotten, or Gonjiam. I'm looking for ff kinos so if you have any in mind I'm here for it

Meta sequels rarely live up the OG.
I've always had a soft spot for Jack Black which I admit likely due to be seeing alot of his best films while I was young and impressionable.
Generally I'm not a fan of Paul Rudd he really needs a good director to bring out his talents.
Anaconda (2025) had some good jokes but greatly hinges on an extreme familiarity with the OG movie. The snake looked alright for the 5 minutes it was on screen. I'm happy that Steve Zhan is still getting work.
>>
>>218458957
>I respect your differin opinion
>although did like Mungo, its not as good as other ff
Based anon, I appreciate your open mindedness. To better define my stance, while the phone-video scene of the lake was good, it was a bit the only actual spook scene in the whole movie, with the other "appearances" and subsequent reveal of the brother being rather poor qualities imo. Plus the plot point of her meeting her future death was rather odd and at some point got confusing.

As for your next choices. Id recommend them. In a similar vein, I walked away having enjoyed them. Won't spoil too much with critiques, but I think you'll be pleased

She doesn't need a TV, within the first 10 minutes of the film we're told of a couple who watched the tape and died inside of their car. Once you get hit with her curse you will always die of a heart attack after 7 days no matter what unless you can transfer it to someone else in time. At least that's how it is in the original film/novel I haven't seen or read any of the sequels if they retconned it.

I was thinking about this movie the other day, and they should have let the sharks escape.

'B-but anon, the super intelligent sharks would have procreated and filled the ocean with smart sharks!'

First, of all, shut up, faggot, second, so what? We're not even tasty to the fuckers. If anything, the biggest problem we humans have with sharks is that they're too dumb to tell us apart from seals. Smart sharks would make the oceans safer, since they'd keep away from us.

'B-but what if they use their brains to develop technology?!11'

With what, imbecile? With their flappers? No, really, a supersmart shark and the dumbest shark would be essentially the same thing. Nothing would change. If anything, they'd breed out of unnecessary smarts in a few generations.

'B-but...'

Shut the fuck up.

Idk if I have just one favorite but I tend to like psychological/supernatural/monster movies the most I think broadly speaking. I used to only like slashers when I was a kid and thought everything else was so boring and I still like them but it's probably the most stale horror subgenre of them all and I don't really seek out or care about watching many of the newer ones past the 90s. Slashers are by their nature just unfortunately very formulaic in structure and there's not much more you can do with it outside of gimmicks like Happy Death Day or Freaky.

Thats funny, I was gonna say that I spiralled in different subgenres and ended up on the other side pretty much a slasher/splatterchad. I like the slasher formula and I kind of think of it like if it aint broke dont fix it. I love all types of horror but my favourite is gnarly dude fuckin up a group of people in an interesting location. All you really need for a top notch slasher is a good location, cool looking killer, memorable music, and either a high body count or a modest amount with excellent sfx work

Mary Lou is basically Carrie meets NOES. It's fantastic.
Cherry Falls is a silly slasher where the killer targets virgins. The uncut version is my holy grail. It's never been released and apparently cut a shit ton of gore and sex to make an R rating. Maybe one day we'll see the uncut version but it's seeming less and less likely.

Ever seen actual combat medics? Hell, have you seen them in fiction? Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers, Hacksaw Ridge? Skinny weird dude is fine.
> some of the worst fight editing
This is correct. Also the reactions people have to what's happening around them is a fever dream throughout.

I was actually on board with the psychotic android angle because what people don't like to admit is that the xenomorph is extremely limited in what you can do with it and there's no way to do a whole tv show with it (yes I have read the comics, that's how I know how utterly retarded all Alien Earth premises are). They basically just had to channel Westworld season 1 with a dash of Blade Runner.
No dice.

Hell, even the corpo war cyberpunk angle isn't bad, you can copypaste large portions direct from game lore and lesser books (Altered Carbon, etc). Corpo bioweapon spionage could be a great series. But it wasn't that either.

It's like 20 different hooks for sci fi show premises crammed into the show and none of them are written well and they all step over each other to the point that child-adult girlboss x pet xeno vs retard Elon Musk genuinely seemed to be something they were proud of.

and why the fuck is the same actor playing multiple roles, and what was the point of first 40 minutes? or last 20?
its like the dumb fag in charge cant grasp the concept of an 3 act structure or even how to fucking finish a movie without a marvel mid credits superheroes assemble scene, like hes doing fucking ghetto avengers

>Ever seen actual combat medics? Hell, have you seen them in fiction? Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers, Hacksaw Ridge? Skinny weird dude is fine.
i do you one better, i seen them in real life, since i did basic training before going back to school
you gonna get your random assembly of people, but its hard to not get beaten some discipline in knowledge into you after few weeks
the character looks legit retarded, out of shape and clueless, and him being an army medic seems to serve no purpose story wise
he show no gun handling, he supposedly is the units veteran who saw action countless time and was deployed multiple times

hell he did working the unit all those years? yerk off?
should have just made him some scientist

> Also the reactions people have to what's happening around them is a fever dream throughout.
the editing and camera work is a trainwreck, there is always this couple second delay to everything, while anything that happens offscreen happens at 100x the speed so alien teleports around when not looking at him, but just stands there doing nothing when on camera
and ironically this could have been fixed in post, something you cant do to the acting, but at lest they could have edited all action and alien scenes better

also on the matter the timeline makes 0 sense now i think about it, how can he be 30? its like 10 years of his life are missing, and how can he be so young in the flashbacks? he should be aroun 25 in those, it makes 0 sense

>Maybe movies just ain't for you pal.
how is that an answer to my question you fag?
why have the added confusion of the same actor playing multiple roles? not only does it force everybody to keep fucking repeating their names every fucking 5 seconds so we know who is who, it makes some of the scene completely incoherent as you have to guess who the fuck are we even watching

even this shitty eddie murphy movie knew you have to make each character look different, not just give them a different shirt, but nope, sinner runs on nigga school of movie making, the only difference between different roles by same actor is the color of his tie, which good fucking luck spotting in dark scenes if its the blue tie one, or the red tie one

It's hard to believe but somehow Hitchcock actually managed to make ordinary birds seem scary, there's a key conversation in a diner scene 2/3rds into the runtime about birds that really puts it all into perspective. It's a very slow burn though, it starts out as a romantic drama then turns into a horror film about an hour in after building up to the first big attack and setting up the characters, their relationships and their personal motivations first.

Some of the effects whilst obviously dated surprisingly still hold up fairly well and it's technically impressive what they were able to accomplish already back then and I read they used over 20k live birds total. I was actually surprised at this level of gore in a mainstream Hollywood film from 1963 even though it's only one scene, Psycho really was revolutionary for its time. Horror is a much more influential genre than most people probably realize desu.

If you don't care about the romance or the characters and just want the bare minimum of setup before getting to the action or you just can't suspend your disbelief enough to buy into the concept in the first place this is going to seem like one of Hitchcock's worse films when it's actually one of his greats.

There's no real explanation for why these attacks occur and the film just ends before any resolution is reached and it couldn't have ended any differently really but there's clues as to what could be the cause of it all throughout.
