can some explain how marty supreme didnt win best score?
>>218595690Academy can't into scores if it isn't orchestral zimmerman slop
Epic synth fatigue
>>218595906i dont understand. fatigue from what?
>>218595690Only award it really deserved, I think the academy has a thing against purely electronic scores
>>218595690because NOBODY CARES ABOUT SOME FUCKING PING PONG MOVIE STARRING LE GLASSES GUY. NOBODY. WILDLY UNAPPEALING. YOU LOST
>>218595690It deserved it, it felt like Vince Di Cola 80s stuff. I was surprised when I found out the movie was not set in the 80s.
>>218596430I have a feeling that the score being synth stuff but the movie being set in the 50s played some part against it>"ummmm this score sounds like some sci fi shit but the movie is about some jew in the 50s? Snubbed"
>>218595690Coming to lose a staged match for a triple dose of humiliation from the people who loath you should not sound this glorious, and yet it works.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cu5PnPAt1LsHonestly, the score snubs are becoming egregious with every year. First Burwell for Three Billboards losing to Desplat's mid, then Babylon to DUUUN DUUUUN DUUUUUN. Now Lopatin just ignored.
>>218595690Academy hates non traditional scores, which includes electronic music. I was listening to the soundtrack yesterday, and I was reminded how good it was. Definitely a snub.
>>218595690I much preferred this to every other movie I saw from last year, but I didn't see Train Dreams so maybe that's better.
>>218595690Imo, the 80s needle drop songs got in the way of the electronic/synth score. It just gets confusing because it's hard to distinguish between the synth pop songs vs the actual score, and I love synth music. I'll give credit to the needle drops songs in that they're from a period of American wealth and a lot of the movie is about the success and aspiration, but they really should've removed "Forever Young" and "Everyone Wants to Rule the World". I'm surprised they had the strength to not use "Beat It" somewhere in the film
>>218596759you can say anything about The Smashing Machine but it also had a great scoreSafdie's have good ears for musicians https://youtu.be/xeAUvWtkCc0
>>218596430A lot of the actual songs used were new wave too I think Safdie just likes that era of music
>>218599274I know its not what you mean by new wave (you are talking about music), but your post reminded me of the recent video of Josh Safdie talking with Chloe Zhao, and Josh was saying he saw elements of new wave filmmaking in Zhao's films, intending it as a compliment, and Zhao's reaction when Josh says New Wave seemed to indicate she saw it as an insult. Then again, being Chinese, she may have different connotations with the term.
>>218596759Challengers OST got snubbed as well
>>218595690>80s music and shitty synth2015 called, they want that shit back.
>>218596294They don't mind if you do something actually good with it.Consult the winning scores BEFORE synthwave damaged entire generation with it's shitness.
>>218598745>but they really should've removed "Forever Young"This instantly took me out of the movie. I lasted grand total 5 minutes later, then noticed this is going to go for 150 minutes more and I just turned it off
>>218600931examples?
>>218600931>OPN is gen Z synthwaveNGMI
Lotta pingpong fans itt
>>218595690Completely possible the judges didnt even watch the movie
>>218600985Top of my head, since this is not my style of music:Midnight Express - one of the things that started the whole synthesizer peak in moviesKundun - electric fusion + orchiestrated soundtrackSlumdog - electronic fusionThe Social Network - pure electronic musicMake it good, and they will award you. Make it shit, and go empty-handed (or more likely - not nominated)
>>218601155... do you blame them in this case?
>>218598745I thought Forever Young was a great pick. One of my favorite parts. Could have done without Everybody Wants To Rule the World.Does feel like a vestige of the original ending where an older Marty takes his daughter to an 80s concert before being bit by vampire Rockwell.
>>218601210oh HELL no none of those come close to OPN
>>218595690Well, he didnt have the brst score, thats why he lost like every fucking game he played. Jew really sucks at ping pong, he should stop
>>218601119The movie is barely about ping pong. The sport itself is just a driving device for the character to escalate every situation into do-or-die mentality.
>>218601340Whatever OPN is.You wanted to know which movies won with electronic music, you've got them.
>>218601459>doesnt know who OPN is
>>218596759Babylon had a great score, the movie was antisemitic tho
>>218595690I love OPN, but this ost and also his ost on Uncut Gems (Akira referencing score for some reason?) made 0 sense for their films. Especially in the case of Marty, it felt like the score to an 80s sci-fi film more than anything else, which was completely jarring with the setting. Also, the rest of the soundtrack of the film just felt like a playlist of songs the director liked, which is always the most lazy way to score a film.
>>218601421this whole situation was contrived and was obvious as to where it was going
>>218601340Social Network has a better score than any soundtrack OPN has put out. He has the potential for a great score but keeps working on films where his soundtracks feel like lesser versions of his music, and are always unfitting.
>>218601780>oh no the aggressive hillbilly picked up the dog that escaped from the car just across the road from his house, where did all the good writing goVery serious arguments.
>>218595690that shootout song soared the shit out of me
I mean, the movie was deliberately going for an 80s soundtrack vibe due to the sports thing and intentionally placed it an 50s setting. You can debate whether it works or not, but they were very aware of what they were going for. It wasn't an accident or some commercial play. It was an artistic decision.
>>218601851>his soundtracks feel like lesser versions of his muYeah, his non-film stuff is superior, I think this is the real problem
>>218601332They really should've done that vampire Rockwell bit. It would've tied the score of the movie much better than the current, 1950s period piece it exists as. Maybe they saw Sinners and thought the two endings were too similar and had to pivot to how it is now.
