Instead, he was a despicable overly cocky character who's only concession is that he didn't get to win at the competition he wanted to be in (but he still won anyway). And he suffers no other consequences for his hubris. That's not a satisfying film to watch. Again, if we got to see the character's mask slip and see for certain that his arrogance was all an act, then it might have been more endearing, but the script left that out, and Chalamet's acting was wooden as fuck. The set design, costuming, and photography were good. The music was weird - it would have made more sense had they ended the film in the 80s as they had originally intended, but the anachronistic music felt too put-upon to feel like effective storytelling.
