The siege of Helm's Deep lasts two pages in LotR. Tolkien, who usually raged at any changes to the story made by prospective screenwriters, even suggested it could be cut in a film adaptation. There was no shortage of men at Helm's Deep, that was an issue at the siege of Minas Tirith. That's why Aragorn arriving with the reinforcements he had gathered was so critical to the battle.
