Correct, it was a trend and copying a now mostly forgotten film. It's just understood that once you travle to Mexico it becomes yellow. The idea is hot desert = sand = yellow. But you'd only ever encounter these conditions in a literal DUST STORM.
Fincher’s The Game had piss Mexico in ‘97. From Dusk Till Dawn probably had it in ‘96 but I think it was yellow before they crossed the border.
