It's hard for underages to understand but before the internet you had to find physical retailers that had a product in stock in order to purchase it.Rashomon wasn't playing in American theaters on it's release in 1950 and wasn't playing in theaters 40 years later except in tiny arthouse cinemas. I don't even know when it got its first official western release but the vast majority of people who wanted it would have needed to obtain bootlegs and that was purely in the realm of actual film nerds or younger people. Boomers would not be familiar with Rashomon as a whole either in 1950 or when the episode of The Simpsons first aired.
