Oh yeah that happened
>>
>>218646515
why is it impossible for directors to do a straight take on Resident Evil?
>>
>>218646515
It never happened in my mind.
I'll stick with 1-6. Any one of them are better than this turd.
>>
>>218646515
The next one is gonna be shit too. Directed by the guy who did Weapons, which was fucking awful, and STILL doing his own take with original characters and story.
>>
>>218646611
Because most writers and directors want to make their own original content donut steel but piggyback off famous franchises even if they completely alter the characters and plot

It wasn't terrible, they did run out of money though. Turning Leon into a stoner retard was the best part.

Because they do not understand that Resident Evil is not about zombies. It is biopunk science fiction. It is Blade Runner set in the 1990s. There is no "zombie apocalypse." Zombies are not that big of a threat in the scheme of things. They are the accidental cast-off industrial waste of a biological weapons black market industry.

I thought the Mansion was cool. That was it though.

>Because most writers and directors want to make their own original content donut steel but piggyback off famous franchises even if they completely alter the characters and plot
Resident Evil does this all the time on its own, but it works because the people who make the games understand what the subject matter is. RE7 flipped every aspect of the entire franchise upside down and still made it work. The developers know the zombies and monsters are an aesthetic and not the subject of the plot.
>>
>>218647302
You're not wrong but zombies are a core part of RE's identity. The general public see Resident Evil as the zombie survival game so any adaptation needs zombies or at least something close to them.

In a way, but there are RE titles that have absolutely zero zombies. RE4 is effectively Lovecraftian and has nothing in common with zombie films.
>any adaptation needs zombies or at least something close to them.
Therein lies the trap. When some western retard gets called in to make a Resident Evil the first thing they think is "oh it's a Romero zombie goreporn I can do whatever I want with it."
>>
>>218648102
As far as creativity or originality go I'm sure Capcom bean counters don't care about quality control of their dozens of films as long as more get shat out. Maybe if a director or writer approached them with a passionate and lucrative idea we could get a good Resident Evil movie one day.

Not a RE fan (not dislike, I simply have yet to engage with it) but from what I gather, Wesker, a Nazi-tier eugenics experiment, is the walking, talking, breathing embodiment of White Man Bad and then they cast Lance Reddick as him. >>
>>218648427
>resident evil is george romero throu and throu, just with cops.
Not really. Zombies in Romero are a calamity, a natural disaster that occurs for an unknown reason. In Resident Evil the mechanism by which zombies are created is an pharmaceutically produced bioweapon, and they're not even the product intended to be made. The Tyrants, the actual intended outcome of the T-Virus weapons program, is far more of a threat than the zombies and even it isn't the subject of the plot. It's not about surviving the apocalypse, it's about surviving out of control corporate hubris and potentially even bringing the people responsible for it to justice.
>>218648546
>Wesker, a Nazi-tier eugenics experiment, is the walking, talking, breathing embodiment of White Man Bad
Wesker never actually did anything racist, he was a radical Darwinist. Didn't care what color you were, if you were weak you died and if you were strong you lived.

Cregger's reboot will be better r-right?

>Zach Cregger Says 'Resident Evil' Reboot Is “Not A Faithful Adaptation”

>"It's an entirely original story," Cregger shares with Entertainment Weekly about the upcoming film, based on the popular video games. "When you watch it, you'll be like, 'This is very Zach.' It's just [that] it takes place in the Resident Evil world."

>"I'm not gonna steal Leon and put him in an original story. I think that would be presumptuous," Cregger continues, referring to fan-favorite Resident Evil character Leon S. Kennedy. "But I respect the games enough where I'm gonna like tell a Resident Evil story in the Resident Evil canon that still leaves everything they love intact from the games, you know what I mean?"
At least it sounds like he's trying. Resident Evil stories can and should exist outside of Raccoon City and Umbrella. Continuously making media about Raccoon City is like making Batman's origin story over and over again.

>Resident Evil stories can and should exist outside of Raccoon City and Umbrella.

His movie is set in Racoon City tho.

>Zach Cregger’s upcoming Resident Evil film (slated for 2026) is a new reboot focused on a courier, Bryan (played by Austin Abrams), navigating a Raccoon City outbreak to deliver a package.

We got lucky with the first two films because they did a really good job. After that it fell apart because, again, somebody just had to go with the Le Zombie Apocalypse trope and immediately fucked up the whole thing.

Did they really use Vegas as advertising for it? The city appears for all of 2 minutes and they didn't even enter a single building.
>>
>>218648856
Money. Hellboy is in this weird place where it's not popular enough to justify a large budget (as the boxoffice for Del Toro's second film showed) but it's well known enough for producers to not let the rights lapse. That last movie had fanfilm-level production values.
>>

>>
>>218656143
That whole movie was such a disappointment, all of it was just shit happening in that lab or them driving aimlessly through the desert. Even the whole desert thing was just because Anderson saw Mad Max and wanted to make a desert film, so he made the film series canon that the world turned into a desert just so he could make this one movie.

I can appreciate his dedication to making these movies but his retarded and random ideas pissed me off.

The scene with the flaming zombie was fun and Kaya is sexo but overall it wasn't great. The sets were faithful at least.
>>
>>218655557
Bro just stop. It was terrible. The only redeemable aspect was the set design and that was nostalgia bait at best.
>>
>>218655813
The idea of resident evil has always been better than the execution. I have no problem with that.
>>
>>218656334
It's amazing how such a modern movie ended up with sets looking so painfully early 2000s in quality. I wonder if that was the intention or just the low budget?
>>
>>218656334
I would also like to add that I liked Chief Irons character in the movie even if he wasn't an irredeemable shitbag like in the games.
>>
>>218656405
Budget drives 100% of all creative decisions in these shit shows.
>>
>>218656341

That's the point of an adaptation, retard. You evoke the feelings and concept of what is being adapted, otherwise there is no point to it.
>>
>>218656445
Yeah I looked up the budget and I can see why it looks shitty then kek. Most of the money probably went to the actors then since at least one of them was pretty famous at the time.

And yet many of its adaptations do not meet this bar, nor do they understand the premise of that story to begin with. Let me give you an example:

This scene is perhaps one of the greatest and most memorable moments in any live action Resident Evil adaptations. It encapsulates everything the source material is about, and there is not a single zombie in sight.
