What are some kinos from the 2020s? Im creating decade collections with the highest quality rips of the best kinos from every decade and I have around 50-60 for every decade but starts dwindling in the 90s (36) until the 2020s where I only have 1 movie (Megalopolis). Any suggestions? Im looking at best of the 2020s lists and its pretty bleak

Chaplin, Hawks, Dwan, Walsh, Lubitsch inspire us to learn to see (men, stones, galaxies, myths, modern machinery, ancient instruments).

Skolimowski, Bertolucci, Rivette, Jancsó, Yoshida inspire us to make shots (cuts, travellings, durations, plays of light and shadow, of planimetry and deprecation, concentrations of photo-auditory particles).

FORTY GUNS

Production, screenplay, and direction: Samuel Fuller – In black and white, in contrast to the colorful sophistication of CinemaScope, Samuel Fuller offers us the second Western masterpiece of the year: Forty Guns, a film that breaks almost completely with the traditional and already tiresome language of the genre.

The first Western masterpiece of the year was John Sturges’ Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, which also deliberately abandoned certain elements in search of new expression. The ballad sung at the beginning, the street duel, the hero’s departure at the end, although present in Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, were already used in a less conventional way. It was not a search for shocking effects, as was (and still is) the case with less talented filmmakers. Now, in Forty Guns, although such elements are present, the way they are used is even more distant. And its advantage over Gunfight at the O.K. Corral lies in the creations of director Samuel Fuller: true discoveries of cinematic language that add a valuable contribution to the seventh art.
>>
The opening sequence is excellent: the hero calmly rides down a dusty road accompanied by his two brothers. There is no music. The scene is shot from above in a wide shot. Suddenly, a shadow gradually invades the frame and a muffled sound of horses galloping can be heard. There is a cut to the feet of horses running, with the sound of hooves galloping in the foreground. Cut to the hero and his brothers, alert to the sound. The camera returns to the horses’ hooves, and the sequence continues in this same vein until the forty horsemen accompanying the bandit Jessica (a woman dressed in black on a white horse) cross paths with the hero’s carriage, startling the harnessed horses and throwing dust in their faces.
>>
Another sequence that reveals Samuel Fuller’s ever-growing talent is the hero’s encounter with the rowdy, drunk, armed young man on the city street. Everyone expects the usual duel. The hero wears black pants and a bath towel around his neck (he interrupted his bath to go and settle the dispute), while the bandit waits for him with his gun drawn. The shooting is imminent. The camera cuts to the hero’s feet as he advances, alternating with the bandit, who becomes fearful when he recognizes the famous shooter. In this interplay of shots that creates dramatic tension, there is an unexpected cut to the hero’s eyes in close-up and then another to a close-up of the bandit’s hand. These shots follow one another until a new cut appears: the camera, from a short distance, quickly advances on the bandit’s hand, which stiffens and drops the gun: this camera movement conveys the power of the hero’s gaze upon the weak-willed bandit in the face of the famous and courageous sheriff. The hero’s eye approaches the bandit’s hand. In this way, cinema expresses itself through pure images. And this is what true cinematic language is.
>>
>>
Forty Guns is also punctuated by other fabulously well-crafted sequences. Many surprising, which should not be commented on, so as not to deprive the audience, or even the most attentive viewer, of the pleasure of the unexpected. And the unexpected in Forty Guns is not an easy trick. Nor a game, in the manner of Hitchcock. It’s serious cinema.

The drawback, even the flaw in this Samuel Fuller film, lies in the ending: the concession to the audience is made when it could have been suppressed. Barry Sullivan and Gene Barry make up excellent characters. Barbara Stanwyck, very old, is in ruins.

I know they're sister bands, but I could never get into Incan despite loving Immo, for some reason. I think it's their respective production styles. There's a real orderliness to the way those Immolation records sound, you can hear each instrument individually doing in its thing in the mix. Incantation are more like a muddy wall of sound.

So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from Hell? Blue skies from pain?
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil? Do you think you can tell?

Did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees? Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change? Did you exchange
A walk-on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fishbowl, year after year
Running over the same old ground, what have we found?
The same old fears, wish you were here

Is it the film strip or the lens? They just seem to be extremely fine grain (which should be impossible for the UK in natural daylight) that it makes a mockery of HD especially for 60s films when I watch them I just can't believe how crisp and sharp they are, or is it just me?

Kes sucks. Fuck birds. I hate birds.

start small and work your way up. every dumb phone has a camera anyway, think of scenes and shoot them just for fun. what do you have to loose? or just do it dry aka make a storyboard. and think of the shot setups, your characters, their lines.

This is my favorite movie and I haven't found anything that scratches the itch.

I've seen Daisies, Morgiana, Beauty and the Beast, Alucarda, Jean Rollin, pretty much all the Czech fantasy films but none of them are really similar beyond maybe some cinematography.

The Company of Wolves, Picnic at Hanging Rock, Lemora I haven't seen yet but they don't seem very similar either

If one were a /film/ anon living in a time where westerns were being released on the daily, that person would get tired on the genre very quickly in my opinion. Westerns saturated the market most of them were forgettable. It is kind of similar to what we see with superhero movies of today but the superhero genre doesn't have nearly as many good to great films or any at all frankly. With westerns at least there were standout films; I think everybody would agree with that.

It was stated that Vera Cruz and Django are "boring shit." That is an embryo take. Much much worse westerns out there in that time period.

It's one of those things where if it's not the right time now then when. That's why stupid people get ahead in the world it's because they don't allow their neuroses and overthinking stop them from doing whatever it is they want to do. DW Griffith made so many biograph short films. Many of them not that good, average, some were memorable. The experience he gained from spending years doing those shorts - immeasurable. It set him up to do Birth of a Nation and Intolerance.

Magnificent poetic work by the most inspired and artistic Russian filmmaker. The director's first sound film, U samogo sinego morya still retains a foothold in silent cinema and allows the characters to express themselves sometimes through silence, sometimes through words (quite scarce) and sometimes through singing.

A Dionysian work, everything in it sprouts and is joyfully transformed into its opposite. The plot consists only of tiny, imponderable and often improvised events on set, and yet the characters give the impression of a great adventure. Most of the sequences use a short and choppy montage and have a great lyrical amplitude at the end due to the interest that the author gives equally to the landscapes and the characters. The latter are poor devils devoid of everything, a kind of clown close to the heroes of Gosho or Jacques Rozier, and yet they give real life lessons.

Devoid of a political message, the film conveys, in short, a message of joy, happiness and gratitude towards life. Russian criticism of the time was implacable (see the documents collected in the Locarno Festival's excellent publication "Boris Barnet", 1985). The film was reproached, in particular, for its emptiness, its formalism, its lack of imagination, its naivety and its artifice. One of the critics (Hermann Khokhlov) laments that the sea "is in a way the main character of the film", which, in a sense, is not false, but he regrets even more that "this character does not arouse any particular sympathy".

Anyone who wants to delve into the immense Russian cinematic continent could not be better advised than to start with this film. Because there is no work more original, freer from all aesthetic and ideological canons, more intimately close to the creator and better in tune with that infinite cosmic vitality of the universe that the best Russian films have always tried to capture, in all eras.
