Word of god states that 1 Battlestar is worth 2 Basestars, and it wasn't unusual over the course of the series for a Viper pilot to have 50+ Raider kills.The only reason they destroyed the 12 colonies was because of the computer virus and surprise nuking all the population centers. Its stated in the show the base stars were built intending that they were just for acting as carriers for raiders and nukes. Not as battleships.They were relying on the virus working. If it didnt work they would have been very outmatched.
