Because the shitty prequels and sequels and other junk hadn't been written yet. Why didn't he tell him about Darth Maul getting cut in half and falling a million feet then somehow coming back because people have no originality? How about fighting Vader on Tattooine, but then Vader didn't follow up on it at all? How about any acknowledgement of Leia being related or him meeting her before? Anything?
