Serious question, is this show any good?
Was considering giving this a watch after I finish Mad Men because I'm in the mood for more corporate suitcore kino.
Watched some compilation clips on YouTube and it seems very funny (I like the comedies that the creator has been attached to).
But it seems like the level of hype people have put on this show in normie circles is insane and I'm assuming it's not THAT good.
Brian Cox is awesome though and I think I'd watch it just for him.
>>
>>218665363
I'll say it was great for the first two seasons and decently okay for the last two seasons

>>
>>218666018
I don't care about the latter because one of my favourite shows is The Thick of It (which the creator of Succession wrote for) and that show is 100% full of POS characters too, just in the politics realm instead of corporate.
But I do want a show that's entertaining and interesting, at the very least.
>>
>>218666018
The one guy worth rooting for just becomes like the rest of them. Such a blueball of a character. I get the point, but having *his* character get the point could elevated the show’s latter seasons.
>>
>>218665363
the first couple of seasons are alright, good soundtrack and some performances but otherwise not special

last two seasons are spent screeching about Not!Drumpf and Not!Elon

it's not so bad because ultimately, like other top shows (mad men, sopranos) it's just about the characters experience's moving through time. there's no real end point or arcs, just layers being peeled back.

it grips you in disingenously on the premise that there is something big at stake and something to strive for but this just kind of becomes a statement in the context of the story. Most poo-pooed and tried to memory hole the show when it ended precisely because they didn't get any pay-offs. But unlike a game of thrones, it was always by design and not just a shitty 'oh, it's coming! it's coming... it's gonna be big!!' trope.

They oversold the consequence too hard in the first two seasons and so when it switches gear in the third and you realise there aren't really any kinds of consequence it kind of sours you on how invested you became early! But it's very watchable, engaging and entertaining.
>>
>>218667049
I see, that makes sense. Ultimately, being true to life, in that type of environment there isn't ever going to be an emotionally satisfying conclusion because in real life there wouldn't be. Really, if there was, it'd be weird and inappropriate considering the setting and characters.
Yeah I'll give it a watch after Mad Men. I'm settled on it. Usually if both normies and /tv/ agree a show is good, it really is good.
But it'll be a while, I'm taking my time with Mad Men because I love it so much and know there won't be anything else quite like it.
>>
>>218667049
Maybe it's because I watched the full show for the first time in the middle of the last season and didn't have to wait years, but I enjoyed the ending. What more did people expect than all of them to troll themselves out of everything they ever wanted?

probably one of the big brained 4D chess upending cultural revolution powerplays the siblings and every other character all kept bullshitting about in every single episode

when you realise what kind of a show it actually is under the veneer all the try-hard nicholas britell scoring may as well just be benny hill music. which makes it better. cousin greg getting some grand symphony just so he can go and pick out a pair of slippers and leave a manilla folder behind.
>>
>>218666672
Yeah, Greg. He presumably grew up around his grandfather, a completely different kind of hard sonofabitch. It would have been great to see that manifest.

>probably one of the big brained 4D chess upending cultural revolution powerplays the siblings and every other character all kept bullshitting about in every single episode
Yeah but the fact that nothing of the sort happens is what makes it so funny and satisfying to me as a naturally realist and non-sentimental person who knows the corporate world and doesn't give a shit about it morally-speaking.
I love that the writers didn't cop out and give an audience-pleasing "and then the evil systems were brought down by the plucky underdogs". That would have completely destroyed the show and ruined everything that came before it. Succession is about as ice-cold as you can get in terms of having any deeper message it wants to convey. It's hyper-cynical and realist and I love it for that.

what a fucking retarded ending for this show honestly i cannot believe you guys actually like it, it was so shit
I wouldve been alright with ken losing but the way he did was so ass especially considering the night before this shit happened where the siblings were all finally good with each other and making that disgusting shake and all that, to do the shit she did after what happened the night before is just insane and doesnt make any sense
shiv also wouldve never given up power to tom instead of ken honestly what a retarded fucking show
>>
>>218667629
I think it was Shiv realizing that she controls Tom, so she still controls the company. The real disappointment is not seeing her devisions crash the company because, as Holly Hunter says, she’s not as smart as she thinks she is.

the ending where she holds tom's hand is literally her realising that she doesnt control him anymore and its the exact opposite like even if tom is just the figurehead ceo he's still way more in control than her
its just a retarded ending man the way ken lost was so stupid and also i dont believe for a sec that rome wouldve bought up the infertile shit like he did especially after ken defended him when logan slapped him and again after the shit they said to each other the night before roman wouldve never said that

No anon you are the retard, all that disgusting shit was to show how the siblings are actually NOT OK with letting Ken have it all, and Ken put up with it precisely because he is a spineless dipshit that will literally eat shit to have it all.
If Ken took power it was virtually over for Shiv. At least this way she gets to be the wife of the CEO

just because the ending is realistic doesnt make it good bruh you guys are so obsessed with having endings that are exactly like what happens irl that you just accept any kind of sloppy ass ending

and this shit isnt even realistic because in the case of the family that succession is based on the one that owns fox news, roman roy won and ken and shiv separated from the company
>>
>>218667818
Incorrect
>>
>>218667803
They were already board members. Ken had no intent to share power with anyone. All the siblings wanted nothing short of being the second coming of Logan himself.
Love was never a factor in Tom and Shiv's marriage. Being married to a Roy and being married (and pregnant) to the CEO of Royco benefits them both at this juncture.

its not like she needs it considering she got 2 bil but still she has no power under the company
and youre actually deluded if you think ken wouldnt have given rome a position like coo or something he genuinely loved and cared for rome

ken losing just makes zero sense he was the eldest boy theres no way he wouldve lost
>>
>>218668032
>ken losing just makes zero sense he was the eldest boy theres no way he wouldve lost
Yeah but the modern corporate world is not like a medieval monarchy, despite what the Roy kids wanted.
Shareholders and board members will not accept hereditary succession if the successor is a fucking retard they have no respect for.
That's kind of the point of the series.
>>
>>218668032
Okay Rome gets to be COO, but what about Shiv? She gets nothing (again), which was the reason she ran to the Swede in the first place

>>
>>218668290

>>
>>218668253
>>218668302
And the problem is?
It's funny because that's literally what the whole "tradwife" archtype is based on, and yet when it happens people on here seethe.
>>
>>218668367
that was my whole point retard that if ken won she wouldve got to keep her position on the board and get an additional bullshit position instead of having NOTHING
>>
>>218662494
Lots of cuts, of her worst angle, shes 100% booty, hips and waist
>>
>>218668393
She keeps her position on the board no matter who wins you fucking troglodyte, she is one of the shareholders. Ken can never give her anything that might come close to satisfying her greed or ego. The alternative is being the wife of the CEO, which she picks. That after four whole seasons you understood nothing about the plot or the main characters is a testament to your brown ESL genes
>>
>>218668526
she doesnt have the position on the board right now omfg youre so retarded rn all she is, is the wife of the ceo thats it not the wife of the ceo and a board member
and the fucking ending made it insanely clear that she has no power over tom anymore she didnt fucking pick him retard, the swede did

>>
>>218668367
Stocklet here. Is there a difference between selling the company and selling your shares in it? I was under the impression that the vote was over the majority shareholders selling their shares to Mattson. I thought it was them opting out of control as well as ownership.
>>
Succession is a masterpiece and the ending was kino
>>
>>218668671
"Control" is tied directly to "ownership" re shares. A share is literally just a portion of ownership. The more shares, the more ownership and therefore the more control.
When a company goes huge and "public" it basically means that shareholders become the true "owners", not a single individual businessman.
If a person accumulates a majority in shares, it means they have a majority "ownership" and therefore can make decisions without having to rely on compromising with other "owners" (i.e., shareholders). In practice this means they are the dominant "owner". There isn't much difference between control and ownership - you can only have one with the other, in large-scale corporate contexts.

>>
Would you guys be okay with being in an open relationship with Shiv?
>>
>>218669202
Stop with this "self-insert" bullshit, just say you like characters that are more moral and human and realistic.
Truly "self-inserting" with a character should be very rare and unusual, not just "literally any character that is good". It makes the phrase meaningless.
>>
>>218669232
Probably, if it meant I'd have the freedom to 1) keep my billionare connections, and 2) have the ability to be in a real loving relationship with a different woman. Eventually I'd maneavuer to get the money and power myself without having to rely on Shiv. Like the plot of Death on the Nile - pretend to love the rich bitch to get her money and then go to live with your real partner.
>>
>>218669239
no this is actually self-inserting its not the same as a character being morally good or a character that is written good too, there are so many good people in got but i only self inserted as robb
its like i need to pick one character in every show or movie where whenever i see him i can go damn thats literally me like are you telling me you didnt have a character like this in star wars or some other movie/show with a big cast
>>
>>218666729

Holy cope. It has nothing to do with old HBO or the golden age of TV dramas. It's just another nu-drama that tries too hard to imitate and one up all the other "powerful people doing bad stuff" shows that came before. The only way you can watch it is by suspending disbelief so hard that the cartoonish dialogue and ridiculous scenarios no longer make you laugh - or by being a woman. The only worse example of this genre I can think of is Yellowstone. I'm sure there are even worse ones since they're still pumping out more these abominations every year.
>>218665363
If you liked Mad Men then you'll love it.
>>
>>218669146

Thanks! I *thought* that was how it worked. So, in essence, had they not sold, the siblings would have been acting as a unified bloc amongst the board members with Kendall appointed Chairman. Instead, they either “cashed out” out completely, or sold enough of their shares to give Mattson control while remaining on the board as “lesser powers,” so to speak.

>>
>>218670697
Yes, exactly. The company was only "unified" under single rule with Logan, but in modern times (ie., when the show takes place) it's scattered among all the shareholders, but if enough shareholders get together to act together, they can control everything because it's purely a numbers game - if 3 people owning 51% of shares want to do something but 20 people owning 49% don't, the 51% will win no matter what.
So yeah the siblings were ultimately stupid and defeated their own interests because they wanted pure absoluyte 100% power which they'd never get because that's just the nature of the corporate world. Only Logan had that power because he buult this shit, not them.
>>
>>218669078
I’m like you. Don’t get me wrong, I got the “point” of the show, but I just feel like it would have been more impactful and resonant to have at least one character “learning” along with us.
