He doesn't "ham it up" he plays the role he is given expertly. He gives the same respect to a silly film that pays the bills or a comedy as he would do to a main role in a Shakespeare play on the London stage. He is also not snobbish or eletist and can be convinced to take roles that don't earn megabucks if the role excites or amuses him, this is why many independent film makers want him in their films and he gets offered parts that wouldn't be offered to a grumpy old man like Harrison Ford for example. As well as meaning he actually enjoys himself, this also means he is kept above the level of actors like Eric Roberts or Dolph Lungrum who are only offered C-movie slop these days.

In the early 2000's he was a little less discerning because he was hit with a massive surprise tax bill as his accountant had fucked up, so he had to make money fast for a few years and did almost anything in quick succession, like Bruce Willis before he completely lost his marbles, THAT is where "Le bad actor" meme comes from. Even then it was not his acting but the way the roles were written compared to his usual standards that was the problem. Even with the shitest writing and direction he would find the gond within even if it was just campy trash he was working with. During this time though he did make 2 of the films he is most fondly remembered for by fans; Ghost Rider and Kick Ass, so he still managed to come out on top.

Nowadays he is certinly back to winning ways and showing off his acting chops to great aplomb with films like Renfield, which is a modern classic where he was privilaged to star alongside one of the biggest stars in Hollywood right now, the sexy Celestial Awkwafina (who was recently rumoured to be taking on the role of Harley Quinn in Matt Reeves' The Batman 2) and catapulted Nicholas Holt to the A-list.
