What films MUST I ABSOLUTELY see in order to be able to consider myself truly well-versed? And I do mean the BARE MINIMUM.

I'm not asking for the word of god, but rather a creative exercise here. If you could make a list of less than a dozen titles that, upon watching to completion, would transition someone from numbskull to midwit with promotion opportunity to pseud with a FIRM understanding of kino, what films would you suggest?
