He will have no material affect on the plot. - There will be a throwaway line that cheekily nods to the fact that they keep reprising the same plot for these films. "Why does this keep happening?" or "What is it with this family?" As if acknowledging it somehow gives them carte blanche to keep doing it- Michael Giacchino will write an absolutely fucking ripping score
