Show fucked up by making them wrinkly ice monsters instead of the ethereal snow elves they are in the books.
Audiences weren't going to care about their motivations due to this one mistake which they realized and ended up shafting them in S8.

are they explained in the books or will we never know what's their deal because the fat fuck will never finish them

It's been a long time now but from what I remember it's implied that The Wall is actually composed of hundreds of weirwood trees in a line with Others stuck to them so that they constantly keep The Wall frozen. The Starks would sacrifice men to the weirwoods to keep the trees from growing old and collapsing. This seems even more likely now that Elden Ring is out and features a similar concept with the Erdtree.
We know from the show that The Others/White Walkers were created by the Children of The Forest but there's still a great many theories. Most likely is that they're a weapon gone awry, there was some sort of pact to provide them with humans to keep them away, but now nobody remembers said pact anymore. They've been growing much more active since Jon was born. Maybe they're afraid of the union of ICE and FIRE and want to strike first.

Fire consumes, but cold preserves.

they literally only appear on page twice:
one in the prologue of the 1st book, and then again when Sam kills one
that's literally it

Holy fuck imagine if Jon Snow was meant to be like Eren! He comes back from the dead and starts leading a white walker army to conquer King's Landing.

The show fucked them up by making them into droid control ships.

GRRM fucked them up by not finishing the books. No one knows where the hell he was going with the walkers, not even D&D who paid him to tell them where he was going with it. They just had to make up some generic shit that would please gawking retards watching. The stupid cold zombies barely even got passed the wall before being defeated. Despite talking it up for almost a decade, Winter never froze any significant part of Westeros.

GURM screwed shit up big time by not sticking to his original 3 book plan.
All his plotlines plotlines have devolved into a meandering fucking slog by book 4 and fat bastard's brilliant solution is adding introducing even more plotlines when he should be wraping shit up for the convergence and conclusion of all the stories.

I will laugh endlessly if he dies before finishing it. His legacy is already fucked. But he deserved to be ridiculed hard after he croaks then forgotten forever.

Even if the books are finished, it will still end with the Others losing fairly rapidly. AFFC and especially ADWD waste so much time with travelogue’s and pointless POVs (Areo, Oakheart, Trystane, Connington), yet there was virtually no development or appearance for the Others except for mentioning hardhome in a report at the end of Jon’s chapter before he’s stabbed. The show did actually one-up the source material here by actually taking Jon there like GRRM had apparently planned in an earlier draft. We basically have no build up for them whatsoever in the books thus far. So either GRRM is going to have unceremoniously kill off other plot points and characters in tWoW like the show did in season 6 and 7 to make time for an Other invasion or he rushes killing them off in book 7.

He’s probably stalling because he knows he can’t make a satisfying conclusion. His legacy is ironically better off if he leaves it unfinished so normies just assume it would’ve ended better.
