Style: the film

This and van helsing are such a perfect pair.
You can probably also throw hellboy in there too.
Such a similar feel between three but especially the two.

What's substance: the film?

I watched this for the first time a couple months ago and it blew my balls off, extreme levels of kino. Feels like a classic from the 70s or 80s, somehow.

It was actually written in 1998 by a twilight zone writer but it didn't get made until after he died.

Why was this hated again?
It made Sean Connery quit acting.

The plot was pretty shallow and it isn't anything like the graphic novel it's based on.

I recently watched both on tubi and Helsing holds up better. Gentlemen was OK but I thought it was style over substance because a lot of it had glaring verisimilitude problems.
