Everyone loved the colonial marines fighting the xenomorphs and wanted to buy the toys, comics and play the games. Alien was good but nowhere near the excitement and staying power of Aliens. And Alien 3 was horrendous dog shit that crashed the franchise into a wall it still hasn't recovered from despite trying a dozen more times.
