It's an ion cannon. It uses ions to cause a ship wide emp which also causes the ship to start to fall out of orbit because of all the ions.

No dingus, they can glass them because Admiral Ozzle dropped the fleet close enough that the rebels detected them and were able to raise a shield around the base in time to protect it from orbital attacks

They didn't plan for them. Most of them probably didn't know they existed. (Stop. Don't even think about it. I know one of you is about to tell me there's "no way the 69th rebel winter battalion hadn't seen them before". I don't care about anything you can't infer from just watching the movies.) 80% of the OT is a reference to the world wars (part of why it's so good and so iconic). It's exactly like the irl guys in the irl WW1 trenches encountering tanks for the first time. The battle of Hoth is Dunkirk.

Now you understand why the Empire was interested in the Death Star. A single planetary ion gun on an otherwise uninhabited ice world could disable a single Star Destroyer every volley. A single shutter shield could protect, for a while at least, the rebel base from concentrated bombardment by the largest imperial fleet ever assembled and forced them to commit to a slow ground assault to destroy said shield. It makes sense then why the Empire would be interested in a station that let them flip the table and just blow up the planet in question.

The Rebellion was growing every day, every world the rebels took through popular revolt or rapidly overrunning the imperial garrison could easily become prohibitively expensive to attack and retake. It was a rare case of foresight on the empire's part, since even before the prequel's retcon the Death Star was being worked on back when rebellions were small and local.

Way I justify it is the rebels knew they couldn't defeat imperial heavy armor, fighting retreat and evac was always the plan (hence the ion cannon), so the trenches and turrets were to defeat a rapid assault with faster light armor.

Think about it, Hoth was a Rebel Strategic Victory. Hoth had no strategic value, rebel command was there specifically because it was an ice ball in the middle of nowhere. The Empire failed to kill or capture any noteworthy rebel leadership, everyone who Vader caught was AFTER Hoth. If the Empire tried to bum rush them without their plodding heavy armor, they'd get massacred and the rebels could safely retreat. If they went in with the heavy stuff, they'd lose men but the ploddingly slow walkers would give them a longer escape window, even if the attack was expertly coordinated. You still have to man those trenches to deter the fast speeders, but it worked. It wasn't as clean or decisive as they may have wanted, but that's war. The rebels succeeded in their strategic objectives and the empire failed, and the rebels lost at most a few hundred men in the process. Arguably, the Empire lost more money in the handful of AT-ATs they lost than the rebels did in the cheap turrets, snowspeeders (straight up technicals, civilian craft converted for military use), and infantry.

Blowing up planets is absolute retardation in any case. The rebels weren't some cosmic existential threat, it's not like the tyranids in 40k or something. Think of all the resources lost from blowing up a planet.
>>
>>218694519
I have this transport ship boxed up in my attic.
>>
>>218694602
The five ISDs and Executor in Vader's task force apparently didn't have enough turbolaser firepower to overwhelm the output of the planetary shield. The Empire only had six Torpedo Spheres available in the whole fleet that would have been able to brute force the shield by sensor probing for a weak point then firing 500 proton torpedoes simultaneously that would punch a hole in the shield long enough for a turbolaser salvo to destroy the shield generator.
>>
>>218694769
I had no idea torpedo spheres were a thing. That's fucking wild.
>>
>>218694602
There's the base's shield. It's why they needed the ground assault in the first place, the shield generator is the primary target and it's why the rebels go from putting up a fight to full retreat when it gets blown up. The fact a base sized planetary shield can frustrate a massive, SSD lead fleet is why the Empire's fiending for the death star to the point they'd try to make a second larger one.

Ozzel wanted to catch the rebels off guard with a rapid assault, which was a pretty bad plan since they lost contact with the probe droid, one should assume the rebels know they're coming. Vader wanted to surround the system first and lock down all the ways out of the system. Which would've been a better plan, but as the ranking officer it's Vader's fault for not communicating it to his admiral. The scene, for clarity's sake.

See, the thing is you're not thinking like an evil space wizard. The Rebel Alliance isn't existential to life in the galaxy, obviously. What they are is a threat to you ruling the entire galaxy. Who gives a fuck about wasted resources? Palpatine thinks like a third world dictator, he'd happily blow up half the galaxy to rule the remainder.
>>
Don't you guys talk about anything else on this board?
>>
>>218694602
Logistics. The Empire cast a wide net looking for the Rebellion’s main base. That means they’d dispatched their forces across a lot of systems waiting for their probes to report back something. The instant the probe spotted the Rebels, the clock started ticking. The Rebels started preparing to bug out, and the closest detachment of the Imperial Fleet started making its way to Hoth.

You see, before absolute hacks took over the writing, Hyperspace travel wasn’t teleportation. It was just a spatial shortcut, and the greater the distance, the longer it took. So what you were seeing was the first Imperials to arrive before the Rebels could finish their withdrawal.

meanwhile with the death star you can just blow the entire planet instead of engaging in ground warfare. planetary officials and regular people will kick the rebels out themselves out of fear of getting blown up. not to mention you'd be able to obliterate rebel bases on uninhabitated planets like hoth with basically zero drawbacks

Whether or not it was canon at the time, the star wars lore since then has decided that planetary shields are extremely annoying to crack, regarding sustained and heavy firepower from a fleet to make orbital strikes actually viable. This is why the Death Star was such a big deal: it punched right through a planetary shield like it wasn't even there and blew up the planet anyway.

I kinda almost wonder if the Death Star was originally intended to JUST punch through shields with overwhelming force, and then it turned out that the level of firepower needed to do that would also vaporize the planet on the other side of the shield if you managed to do so, and they just sort of rolled with it.
