What does /tv/ think of the giant monster movies of Eugène Lourié? The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953), The Giant Behemoth (1959), and Gorgo (1961). Beast and Gorgo are pretty well known in their genre; Behemoth a bit more obscure. I've only seen Behemoth once so I'll rewatch it today.

The three films all had fine performances, effects work, and camera work by the standards of their time, but the monsters are the real stars. Again, the Rhedosaurus and Gorgo and Ogra are the stars, cool designs and well done effects work. Gorgo is the most ambitious, with a full suitmation city rampage, as well as being the only color film.

Gorgo is usually on tubi, but the others two are a bit harder to find on streaming services.

I did my rewatch, and Giant Behemoth is definitely the least of the three. The characters are too dry and the Paleosaurus takes too long to show up, but once it does it's a constant presence onscreen.

Only one I've seen is The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms. It's kino and clearly inspired Godzilla way more than weebs would like to admit.

It certainly was, as expected of Ray Harryhausen.

Was Ray involved in any of the other films?

Beast and Gorgo are good. Never liked Behemoth due to the story and creature not being particularly interesting.

No. The effects of Behemoth were done by his mentor Willis O'Brien. Gorgo's special effects director was Tom Howard.
