Now that we got the braindeadery out of the way, I really enjoyed it. Solid 8/10. Not as good as the book and I wish they hadn't cut so much but still. Worth a ticket.

I listened to the audio book a month ago and was shocked when I see a movie was coming out. I can finally be a bookfag and complain how it was better!
>>
>>218903231
Welcome to the club. Work on bringing up the differences between the book and the movie in casual ways instead of just going straight to "the book was better" because most people just stop listening once they hear that. If you want to enlighten the plebs you have to talk about the way the scene could've been better first THEN mention that's how it was in the book.
>>
>>218903221
That theme makes its way through the entire story.
>turning a mighty symbol of war into the scientific, globally collaborative hub needed to save humanity (aircraft carrier)
>turning an environment hostile to life into the source needed to breed tons of astrophage (cover a large portion of the Sahara desert with solar panels to generate enough power for the breeding process)
>use the most powerful weapon ever invented by humanity to stall humanity's extinction (nuking Antarctica with hundreds/thousands of nukes to release all the methane trapped in the ice into the atmosphere)
>>

>audio book
If you’re "reading" a masterpiece on a tiny screen during a commute or letting a narrator’s voice drift through your headphones while you wash the dishes, you will never in a trillion years experience a book. You’ll think you have experienced it, but you will be cheated.
You will be experiencing a profound weakness and the extreme putrification of a potential journey into another world. Do not let your friends or some clever marketing advertisement trick you into accepting these spiritual shortcuts. It is such a sadness.
The power of the written word in that world is critical. Every syllable, every comma, and every deliberate silence on the page has been worked on to be a certain way. If you don't have a dedicated setup for your reading. The right light, the physical weight of the paper, the total silence of the room. Without these, it’s a joke.
It is the most sickening, horrifying joke. This world is so troubled and it is such a sadness that you think you’ve "read" a book on your phone or through a speaker. Get real.

I gave it a chance but it was shit. I was into it in the beginning when its just him and he wakes up on the ship and shits fucked. Then they bring in all this awkward shitty backstory and you never really come to understand why he even cares about anything. The alien creature is annoying and faggoty. The damn thing was an hour too long, and they're STILL doing the wise token negro bit. There's literally a scene where a bicycle enthusiast american security guard tells Gosling's super intelligent secret genius character to put a box inside a box to solve the problem that fixes everything. He does all the boring shit and doesn't even get a handie off the grump german woman. The enemy/threat wasn't shown enough to care. The constant back and forth between current and flashback timelines is disorienting and leaves you not caring about whats happening to him. I wanted the sun eaters to win. The movie is like somebody prompted an AI to make a shitty version of 2001 crossed with Enemy Mine, Armageddon and Mac and Me. I really wanted to like this dammit

The movie is good because it keeps the framework from the book but excises almost all of this style of dialogue, and what little remains is made palatable by Gosling's delivery

I just read the whole book over the weekend while I was stuck at airports, this is not even close to the most egregious example. Grace is the most insufferable OH MY HECKIN SCIENCE cringe Redditor character ever put to paper. There was something this bad or or worse in multiple chapters, sometimes every other page had him being Reddit personified. I can normally brush this off but it is his core defining character trait, he's genius science man but erm THAT JUST HAPPENED the whole way through.

The tonal whiplash in this movie was insane. Lots of great moments and visuals but also some of the worst excesses of Marvel quipping. Rocky becomes a fucking cartoon character like 15 minutes after he's first introduced.

Lot of moments feel artificial, carefully crafted for certain crowds ,and completely ignore the natural flow of the movie.
Like Rocky changes from a smart alien being into Disney character the moment he sets foot on earth' ship.
Grace has no character arc even though they did try to force one.
The events on earth are often seen as gag scenes and have no urgency. The music used are all over the places, from catholic music to modern pop etc...

Fun buddies movie and all but it's certainly not amazing one.

seen the movie yesterday
as the book reader it made me feel just sad
its good, but the best moment in the book is reduced to a few second scene
just part of a montage with background music
and its so weird cuz it had all the ingredients to make an awesome catharsis moment
theres a real build up and then theres the pay off...
the movie was poorly planned, edited but they really should have cut out some parts in the first half
so that the last act of the book is not this insane sprint

[SPOILERS]
The movie makes it a big deal for the hero to decide to save Rocky or to go home.
Good.
But then once the decision is made the movies is basically over and its just ending.

Meanwhile it was really fucking hard to find Rockies dead ship.
Real desperation, they literally should have made gosling cry because he cant find him, like really sob uncontrollably.
But with luck he finds him, and theres a fucking pay off when after he beats on the hull of the dead ship, Rocky comes up on radio and he is absolutely happy beyond this world.
Its like videos where dog reunites with their owner happy... or kids get something they wanted for xmass and they talk talk.. and Rocky the fool immediately offers he will just wait for his people to send another ship, that the hero can go home himself...
but its really the heart and the catharsis of the book, when Rocky after months on a dead ship stranded in the interstellar space is saved...
>>
>>218917369
Awful. I don't know how anyone could read this and enjoy it as an adult.
>>
I liked the movie in general, but Rocky's species not knowing about radiation or special relativity was retarded on so many levels. There's just no way you can have the tech to build a light speed space ship and not know about radiation or relativity.

The movie felt like it was 20+ minutes too long. Really weird pacing situation. They do this long goodbye scene, where everything is resolved, but then, oh no, there's a problem, and now we need to continue the plot to stretch this to two and a half hours.

I will say, Ryan Gosling ending up living with the aliens is more interesting than a, "one of them sacrifices themselves" ending, that the movie was practically cockteasing you with.

>Grace is shown to be a unskilled pilot
>Rocky was shown to be a rather good pilot when he kept up with Grace's erratic movements.
>Grace and Rocky make a plan where Grace has to be the pilot because they're using his ship
>Grace also has to do a space walk and leave the ship unpiloted at a critical time.
Err, but why? They could have just had Rocky fly his ship down low while Grace does his space walk thing. Nothing changes except the plan would work 10x more smoothly.

Actually, on that note, why did Grace even need to do the space walk before boosting his ship back into orbit? The ball with the bacteria wasn't going anywhere. They could have just left it on the side of the hull, flown back into orbit, then collected it.
>>

>>
>That one part where Rocky sees Grace recording a video diary and thinks he's talking to someone in real time
>This demonstrates that Rocky doesn't know light takes time to travel from one star to another, despite being from a space fairing species.
It feels like they made him an idiot for comedic purposes, but they went too far. Combined with the fact that the rest of Rocky's crew died dude to not knowing what radiation is, I'm just flummoxed at how his species even built their ship's lightspeed engine. It mean it requires generating CO2 spectral emissions.

Do you think slack-jawed, gum-chewing, Yankee-doodle-dandy Astronauts or vodka-swilling, cannibal, Cosmonauts know that much about the theory behind how their rockets work?

They're there to do publicity sections for TV or the internet, set up the occasional science experiment under strict fool proof instructions, record data and turn on the computer that flies the rockets these days.

Do most Amazon delivery drivers know how to change a tyre on their van if they get a puncture? Probably not, half of them don't know basics like not parking on corners or double yellow lines.

So why would Rocky need to know about light speed and all that gubbins when its probably all taken care of by scientists and above his paygrade.

Imagine meeting an alien species and getting off on the right foot that fucking hard.

Which is not to say I'm not up for a bit of the usual picrel IRL if we meet aliens, because the best kind of bug is a dead bug, and I'm not going to get all weepy about it like that little faggot Ender.

But I could live with being galactic bros from the get-go. Wouldn't be the worst scenario possible.

Agree. More of a stretch than your average science-illiterate normie realises.

Does anyone know if that was from the book or was that some kind of change/oversimplification for the film?

It was from the book, epic science man has to explain to Rocky that his crew died due to cosmic radiation and what relativity is because his race completely bypassed those concepts before making a spaceship

>>
It's better and has less cringe comedy from the book. Gosling is charming. There is nothing to hate.
>>
>>218922322
The Eridian's ignorance of relativity at least serves a plot purpose in the book. It's why Rocky's ship has like double the fuel of Grace's ship. They weren't expecting the fuel saving effect of time dilation. I figured this was the reason in the movie as well, but didn't confirm it until reading a plot synopsis of the book. I can sort of let it go because it is a high level concept and maybe the Eridians didn't have their own Einstein to figure it out, etc.

As for the radiation ignorance, though, that's just silly. It also serves the plot purpose of killing off Rocky's crew, but there's so many other ways to do that than having the Eridians never discover they can die from radiation exposure. It's a sheer leap of logic to think this intelligent species never put some of their animals into orbit for a few days to see how their biology handled it.

Okay I just had Gemini explain the book concept in relation to the film and I get where it was going, the two points of view of the same phenomena without them being able to 'see' light the same way we do and rushing a starship into construction with minimal testing and space experience.

Yeah, more clever and detailed about it than the movie can convey, so fair enough.

Am I the only one who hated the Rocky movie references? Seemed supergay to me. Okay, so maybe forgivable if the alien is basically a fucking rock, but also the fucking probes being named after the Beatles was just lame and gay to me and made it worse. What the fuck do those hippie faggots have to do with space and shit? They were just Grace's favourite band all of a sudden of something? In the book maybe? Something like that Voyager episode where they declare Woodstock some epic turning point in history? Just made it seem more plebbit at the same point I'm doing my best to forget the lame excuse they had for putting this gay teacherfag on this mission in the first place.

No, it's described as space algae and is going to cause humanity's extinction so there are no qualms about them finding a way to kill it. Also they don't completely wipe out the Astrophage either, the solution is introduced to the atmosphere on Venus to control them, so presumably they can continue to breed as much of it as they want on Earth to harness as the ultimate fuel source.

I have no fucking idea how people are saying this is the greatest thing they watched or read and I probably never will.
I'd give it a 6. The plot didn't really do it for me and I thought some of it was in really bad taste considering the times of our era. It's actually to a point where I'm like, is this propaganda?
Grace is such a good guy for being forced onto the mission against his will because he has nothing at home. He's such a hero for sacrificing himself and everyone should be so proud we forced someone into space to save the earth and fulfill his civic duty. Grace should be proud of himself! Just like you when you get drafted into war and perform your civic duty :)

I'm surprised nobody really mentioned that part online.

They use it to power the rocket ship and make it accelerate to like 92% the speed of light for years, the book constantly goes on how an individual astrophage which is like 10 microns across has enough energy stored in it to power New York city for 100 years and dumb shit like that. The disaster that causes Grace to be forced to go on the mission instead of the original astronauts is caused by the scientist astronauts accidently running too much power through like a milligram of astrophage for a test when it was supposed to be a nanogram and it results in a nuclear explosion that vaporized everything in a 5 mile radius. They do that to promote spawning of more astrophage. i.e. they're farming them to later use as fuel.
>>The box flies
No, the IR acts as a pump to draw the astrophage from a source tank and then ignite them to produce thrust off the lens where they were collected. This is why it was called a spin drive.
The astrophage are consumed like a fuel. Which is why both spacecraft in the film had a limited range. They're not making infinity fuel.

Haha, r/outoftouch much? Anyway, glad you liked it — solid 8/10 is fair. Movie > book? Nah, book wins every time, but this one did the job: pacing was tight, visuals popped, and the lead carried it. >“Intelligence evolves to give us an advantage over the other animals on our planet. But evolution is lazy. Once a problem is solved, the trait stops evolving.”
>― Andy Weir, Project Hail Mary

You'd think these bleeding-heart 'muh science' retards would be the last to forget that humans competed, and still compete, against the most dangerous organism on the planet - other humans.

That's why we continued, and had to continue, to get increasingly intelligent over and above what was already necessary to kill all the other extinct hominids, leaving a big gap between us and literal monkeys so stupid they are no threat. You don't see any Neanderthals and shit competing for the same resources today because we wiped every single one of them out already, and we're still not exactly crazy about other homo sapiens that diverge too much from us.

Don't blame me. I don't make the rules. You'd think a 'muh biologist' would know there's no real difference between 'natural selection' taking a bazillion years, and the human-driven 'selective breeding' that turns wolves into chihuahuas over twenty thousand or so, (not that many generations when you think about it).

Hell, Hitler alone altered the German and by extension European, and human gene pool forever overnight while he was busy doing nothing wrong for just a few years, (I mean he would have if the Holocaust had actually happened - which it didn't - but it should have). What do you think Alexander the Great and Genghis Khan were doing centuries before that?

I swear plebbitfags are so far up their own arses about 'muh evolution' they can't see the forest for the trees, just as much as the Christcucks who couldn't see the obvious 'missing link' explanation that was always obvious.

Humans are subject to obvious intelligence-related selective pressures right now that are obvious, which is why (You) can't get laid and why you're a pathetic brokie NEET getting outcompeted by literally everyone else on the planet.

Hey, that's not due to lack of intelligence. There are many other virtues besides intelligence.

I thought the movie was good. It's easy to see how much they cut it down for pacing, since the book is kind of a lab procedural that most people wouldn't have the autism to sit through hours of. I still want to see an extended cut that shows a lot of the minor scenes that got glossed over. The first half of the movie was nearly a montage to condense things.

Stuff I didn't like: Leaned too much into broad comedy. Grace in the book thinks like a retarded redditor but it's not a comedy plot. They also inserted new scenes instead of showing more book content.Wish Stratt hadn't been humanized in the movie. Book Stratt was a bitch and Grace hated her. I wish they'd had the original ended where Rocky tells Grace the sun is working again a decade later. I thought that had a lot more impact.

In fairness hes a teacher to a bunch of foreigners so no chance really when you think about it.
This movie is deep
>>
>>218947938
Except he literally chose to go to save Rocky and is being treated not as some zoo exhibit but as a teacher to rock babbies, and Rocky outright tells him that he is free to be sent back to Earth if he so wishes.

>>
>>218948903
Wouldn't that backfire once the sun's output was restored?
Or is the damage done to the sun's output permanent?
>>
>>218949377
The effects from nuking Antarctica wouldn't be 'permanent' either, and maybe they'd calculate it as best they could, but also they're desperate. Also the science in PHM is stupid.
>>
>>218949377
From the Hail Mary being built to Earth receiving the solution, it takes about 30 years. They likely only did enough to counter the amount of cooling that was inevitable. It's possible that doing as much as they could might have only made a small dent in it.

>>
>>218917369
WTF? How does this shit get adapted? This sounds like it was written by ChatGPT. Now I know why the science in it is stupid. It's because the author is a retard.
