"The young woman is dressed in the Florentine style of the period, with closely fitted overlapping clothing and a neckline adorned with a coral necklace. The delicate face reflects the precise and pleasant style of the painter, a favourite portraitist among Florentine society at the time.

Ghirlandaio’s representations, like those of his contemporary Botticelli, favour the idealistic stylisation of female beauty, at a time when portraiture was spreading among the bourgeoisie and human values were increasingly making their way into art."

>Dumb movie made by a dumb director. Seriously, this is like some dumb guy watched the Wages of Fear, A Taste of Cherry, Mad Max and then went to a rave afterwards and got the idea to smoosh all of them together into a shaggy dog story. This is not technically well-made due to the director btw, it just has a ton of montages set to EDM and a few well photographed scenes of the convoy thanks to the DP (who also lensed Samsara, something I'm quite interested in getting around to reviewing). I have to say, any movie with this many explosions and comedic deaths will always be entertaining, even if there is very obviously nothing profound behind all the elements cribbed from other, better movies that the director obviously didn't get. Dumb guy magic desu.

It makes total sense how David Lynch played John Ford in The Fablemans, because they both peddled racist, misogynist, cornpone all-American daydream nation bullshit, with lush cinematography barely concealing childishly shallow worldviews. Ford was probably the most overrated director of the 20th century, like Lynch became the most overrated of the 21st. Which is not to say they never made any good movies, but rapey horror movies are to today's little boys what Cowboys and Indians were to little boys of Ford's time. When both played idiot savant for interviewers, they were truthfully denying the depth being projected onto them. Steven Spielberg is actually a better film-maker than both of them, but he's a gross asshole peddling nonsense too.

>The authors also noted that while exposition was considerably facilitated by the use of dialogue, sound film lost the advantage of the facile revision of intertitles, an aspect of silent filmmaking that offered more freedom to both editors and directors.
>The overwhelming majority of comments in the trade press do not concern the actual speed of line readings, nor the problem of editing per se, but rather the way in which dialogue interfered with “action,” sometimes understood as physical movement within the scene and sometimes as narrative pace (the apparent speed of the succession of events).
>Writing in July 1928, Joseph Dubray, the technical editor of American Cinematographer, contrasted silent cinema with how he imagined that talkies would develop. He noted that in silent film, as a result of editing and highly condensed titles, “every move is carefully analyzed so as to dispense with all nonessentials.” In contrast, in the talkies, “the eye confined to the surface of the screen would have to absorb a lot of lost motion in order to give the ear the opportunity of absorbing the essentials of sound.” “the whole tempo (excuse me for the use of this expression) of the picture would be lowered, its action would lose its greatest asset, the afore mentioned elimination of nonessentials.”13 Thus, in Dubray’s view the problem with introducing speech within a visual medium was that the image track had to “slow up” in order to allow for it.
>>
What's this american obsession with speed, slow doesn't mean bad. They're treating the audience as children with no attention span.

Decent, but nothing groundbreaking or profound. The acting is super theatrical and it's hard to take it seriously. Adjani and Neill are terrible. The film itself isn't that scary and it's not particularly subtle. Bland filmmaking if i'm being honest

>there's only a very narrow and particular use of a cinematic technique/apparatus
I hate the way you people discuss these things... "When you do X, I approve of these cinematography/acting/directing/etc choices, but if you deviate from that orthodoxy, it's "bad""... It's basically reducing artistic expression to a set of martial gestures and maneuvers that must be followed to create something "good"... But I guess the 'tistic mind can only think in premade maxims...

>>
Acting in a Cassavetes film = extremely important
Acting in a 50s western = not that important

I'm speaking in extreme examples here of course but idk why this is so difficult for people here to comprehend
>>
Actors are glorified pornstars. If you make a film with zero dialogue, you will notice that actors are of little importance. It's their gestures that matter, they should not try to elevate the film in any single way. Sadly, people still worship actors and that is why i believe cinema can't move forward as an artform.
>>
>>218934671
>>218934887
Agreed.
>>
The pursuit of "prestige" has made American cinema timid, beige, and afraid of looking silly. And in that fear, it has forgotten that sometimes "goofy nonsense" is the only way to capture the actual nonsense of the human soul.

>Initially conceived of a "Three Mothers" entry by its writer and intended star Daria Nicolodi, Cozzi worried about displeasing almighty Dario by "choosing sides" so he refracted the story to a kind of alternate reality meta-sequel, somewhere between Targets and Wes Craven's New Nightmare. This pissed off Daria, so she split the project.

Films about becoming obsessed with a girl you spoke a minute with before parting ways with no way of contacting each other, only to run into her a month later and finding out she's felt the same way the whole time, giving her your number she mistyped, and the next day spending hours outside waiting to run into her again, only to run into her again and finally getting in contact?

That does it, by golly
It's nasty for sure

Sidney Lumet tries to do an Antonioni pastiche, shot in Italy with an italian crew and even with Carlo di Palma as DOP
it's very boring so I guess he succeded

nice, very cool
>>
>>218975761
One of the many box office flops of Lumet in the late 60s.
Omar Shariff and Anouk Aimee play italian characters with their real voices which is a mistake, I guess that's why italians always dubbed their films.
The poor producer tried to sell this movie as a sexy flick, but just before the first time they are gonna fuck, there is literally *LITERALLY* a one minute long scene of Omar Shariff washing his teeth

Mizoguchi, Bresson, Dreyer were all extremely autistic. It's palpable in their work

The two things I found more interesting about the Scorsese version was how much more graphic the violence was (I was seriously shocked when Cady bit off Lori's face like a demon, the scene with the family finding the PI and maid dead was excellent, while as you said the ending was incredible and made the film worth the wait) and the deep sexual tension between Cady and Danielle that feels like a scary inverse of Taxi Driver.
I feel like a better version of this movie that went in a more Giallo direction which focuses more on the psychosexual between Cady and Danielle and how it relates to the family using an even more saturated, bright color palette than it did here could've easily been made and been both better and even more disturbing than the original, but again given this was a big-budget, mainstream Hollywood release that was never going to happen.
It's still a good movie though, it definitely stands on its own merits despite overall being a slightly worse adaptation than the Southern Gothic, impressionist-influenced original was.
And yes, Cape Feare is a masterpiece. It even has a full-length science fiction play about it:

>>
>dour french people speaking english

>>218990014
They had a complicated relationship. He had the perverted aristocrats quoting Pound's Cantos in Salò.
>Pasolini had been one of the few poets who since 1956 had clearly refused to sign a petition for Pound’s release from the criminal mental hospital in which he had been confined for eleven years, when the death penalty for treason, collaborationism anti-American and fascist propaganda had been converted into confinement on psychiatric grounds. Eugenio Montale, Giuseppe Ungaretti, Salvatore Quasimodo, Elio Vittorini, Vittorio Sereni, and even some who were close to Pasolini such as Sandro Penna, Alberto Moravia, Attilio Bertolucci, together with many others, had signed the petition for Pound’s release, in the name of humanitarian principles, or on the basis of the fact that he was one of the greatest poets of all time.
