The very consensus on how to handle these things have shifted entirely. Back then, a journalist would fight to assert himself as neutral, now they run away from it as if acting neutral was an active support to whatever shit thing is going on that was not addressed.Another difference is that back then the politically correct way to handle things was to say "don't generalize". Saying things like "not all men" or "not all women" were genuine defenses against prejudice and discrimination. Some people act terribly, but we should not expand that into a category of people. Not it is reversed, everyone is terrible and if you claim not to be, you're just masking and coping and people will assume the worst of you.
