That's why the reunion feels so rushed, it's a second climax too close to the other. Also i think Goose having no real attachments to Earth made the intersecting flashbacks feel intrusive for the survival scenes. I really liked the close encounters homages.

It gives more emotional weight to his subsequent decision to sacrifice his journey home to save Rocky and Erid. Specifically because we now know that it's something that Earth Grace would NEVER do. It's the surest evidence that he has grown as a person.
