Is this a good movie?
americans can't make movies as good as that anymore
>>218948428>>218948455It's our ultimate example of cinematic bragging rights. Can the euros do it better? Of course. Can they do Apocalypse Now? No way. There are very few things I love more than this movie.
>>218948428It's alright
>>218948455Yeah because the synagogue of satan deliberately ruins movies and video games on purpose. I imagine they also summon demons to help "sway" people to make garbage and ruin once great movies as a demoralization ritual
>>218948428IMO, it's held up the beach assault and the bridge scene. If it weren't for those, it would not be in the popular conscious to the same extent.
>>218949025*held up BY the beach assault FVCK
>>218948428gets pretty boring after the 20th re-watch
>>218949025There's also the briefing in the beginning, the entire scene at daybreak that culminates with Willard and Chef encountering a tiger, when they kill the Vietnamese in a passing boat, the arrival sequence, Kurtz getting clipped.
>>218948428I never liked it. it's an unwatchable piece of shit to me.
>mfw the 3rd act
Why does the french scene filter so many?
>>218950995i don't know either. it adds essential continuity to the whole theme that they're traveling backwards in time to humanity's most primal state. without that scene, the transition to Kurtz's compound feels pretty janky.
>>218950995It could've been a little shorter with more time being added to the arrival sequence, especially when they're traversing through the river at night with all the torches lit. But I understand that it's important given the historical context.
>>218950995Because it's secretly genius
>>218950995because of the girl that's eye fucking Martin Sheen the whole scene
>>218948428>Did you reply to OP?>There's no fuckin' OP here
>>218950995it feels a bit rushed but it has great implications
>>218948761>video gamesYou’re a grown man
>>218951630yeah watching talmudvision is a manly man's hobby
>>218949025Kilgore's surfing antics steal the spotlight and then the movie never truly recovers
>>218948428It's a light-hearted farce. Very enjoyable. There were some people who took it seriously, but that always happens.
>>218953742Ah, yes. All the heads on pikes while they're traversing the river, the soldier screaming in agony with his left leg blown off. Light-hearted.
>>218948428It's the most above-average movie ever made. You'll watch it once, be bored in parts, but think it was pretty good. You'll think you should watch it again in a few years. You'll start it but turn it off. The beach is the only exceptional sequence.
REDUX was a downgrade. The original cut was better.
>>218948428Its kino. Watch the original 2 hour theatrical cut first, Redux only if you want to rewatch again
>>218948428it's like full metal jacket but good
>>218953811Coppola tried as hard as he could to make it serious, but the harder he tries the funnier it is. Same with Oliver Stone films. Dennis Hopper and Marlon Brando are pure comic relief. Martin Sheen trying to act tough and on the edge of insanity is pure cringe. Duvall is a cartoon character.
The best war movie ever made, and I feel like it’s got the popcorn entertainment value that it holds up even to zoomers while having a lot of depth
I watched a snail crawl along the edge of a straight razor. That's my dream; that's my nightmare. Crawling, slithering, along the edge of a straight razor... and surviving.
Hey, man, you don't talk to the Colonel. You listen to him. The man's enlarged my mind. He's a poet warrior in the classic sense. I mean sometimes he'll... uh... well, you'll say "hello" to him, right? And he'll just walk right by you. He won't even notice you. And suddenly he'll grab you, and he'll throw you in a corner, and he'll say, "Do you know that 'if' is the middle word in life? If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you, if you can trust yourself when all men doubt you"... I mean I'm... no, I can't... I'm a little man, I'm a little man, he's... he's a great man! "I should have been a pair of ragged claws scuttling across floors of silent seas."
>>218955385Oh you're one of those. Earnest, serious expression intimidates you because you're not capable of being sincere. It's easy for you to pick things apart because you do it to yourself every day.
I will not hurt or harm you. Just give me back the board, Lance. It was a good board and I like it. You know how hard it is to find a board you like.
>>218950995probably because its very specific to vietnam and france. the rest of the film's themes are pretty universal and easily understood or very specifically american.
>>218955544Do you think he would've shot us?
Duvall looking like Markwayne Mullin with that ridiculous hat. All he needed was a southern string tie and cowboy boots.
>>218948428Still waiting for the fat-free under two hour cut.
>>218949025>if you took out some of the best scenes I don't think the movie would be as good
>>218955511>that can of stella>mfw
>>218950995Chads love it because it's the version with the old school perfect all natural Playboy Bunny tits in a helicopter in addition to the French MILF's
>>218955544>Janny: I will not hurt or harm you. Just give me back the board, Anon. /tv/ was a good board and I like it. You know how hard it is to find a board you like.
Pro tip: Hearts of Darkness just hit Tubi
I've seen it
>>218955996Prefer it to the actual film to be honest. And alsohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zcEZM7j9H4
>>218955907The entire 3rd act sucks.
>>218955385>the humor>the humor
>>218955928Stella is a weak ahh brew iirc
>>218948428You just have to go into it knowing that it's a slow burn with lots of highlights but lots of really LoooOOOooooOOOOoooong, drawn out parts in between where nothing happens and Martin Sheen or whoever is just meditating about shit for-fucking-ever. All the movies from the 70's are just slow-paced and have like 20-30 minutes of just pure time waste where nothing is going on except MAYBE people talking, maybe not even that. And even when people ARE talking, nobody ever gets to the fucking point, it's always long, drawn-out, meandering stories about stupid bullshit that is probably not really related to the plot or anything, it's just empty exposition for it's own sake and it just goes ON and ON and ON for like 10, 15, 20 fucking minutes. Apocalypse Now has the same pacing issues as all 70's films but at least it does have good scenes shoehorned in to kind of buoy it up, it's a bloated mess like all 70's films and you could easily cut a half hour or more from it and still have basically the same film. I mean somebody REALLY enterprising could probably cut an hour out of it and still preserve the story. And that's insane, considering the whole film is like three and a half hours, to say you could cut ONE THIRD of it out and still not lose anything from the story at all.
I would say so, yes. Definitely an experience.
70s pacing is ideal. Time disappears, it draws you in.
>>218957058i hope this is bait because if you actually think like this your attention span is FUCKED, like your brain is mush
>>218957387ADHD is one of the most destructive conditions, the utter ruination of your cognition, the deterioration of your personal capability. Like they're so fucking retarded it's astounding, they're cursed
>>218956548isn't it 5.2%? That's ok. But it tastes like piss.
>>218957387Dude, I'm telling you, you could cut an HOUR out of Apocalpyse Now and not even touch any of the big scenes that everybody loves. I'm talking about scenes where the camera is just pointed at the water as the boat is going, or looking at the sunset, there's SO MUCH time spent where there's literally nothing going on, not even Martin Sheen's voiceover. I'm saying you could keep all the action and all the dialogue and all the character interactions and still cut . . . okay, maybe not an hour, but 30-40 minutes easy. And dude, let me tell you something, watching a fucking four hour movie is fine if you're at home and you can pause it and take a break and do other things, but sitting in a theater for that long trying to hold in your pee is fucking ridiculous. I mean if anything, it should be even longer in theaters, they should give it two 10-minute intermissions. The director is just jacking himself off filming sunsets or whatever the fuck. "Oh, wow, man, the sun! Wow, man, and it's like, Vietnam, dude, AMAZING, wow, can you imagine what it must have been like, bro?" It's not even about having a short attention span, I just have better shit to do than watch Francis Ford Coppola fucking jerk himself off pretending that zooming in on a grasshopper's ass is the most artistic fucking thing ever made.
>>218957798If I ever get my hands on the five hour cut, I'm sending you a copy.
>>218957798ask at the concession stand for an empty XL soda cup and piss in that
>>218957906I can probably watch it if I had seven fucking hours to do it in. Do you motherfuckers have maids, or like your mom cooking for you? Like I'm running a household, I actually have shit to do. It is so rare for me to have four hours of time to kill and nothing better to kill it with than a fucking Vietnam movie. Just saying. And I'm sorry but I don't think you're smarter than me because you can fucking sit there and zone out watching the TV for four fucking hours. You know, I read BOOKS, I work on the computer, I sell shit for a living, I'm on the phone 2-3 hours a day, I have to cook and clean and keep house, I have shit going on. You talk about "oh, the 70's pacing is so great, time disappears," fucking LIFE doesn't! I don't have time to put my fucking LIFE on hold for that long, I wish I did.
>>218951630Videogames today are just big budget moves you can interact with. Get with ze times unc.
Duvall and Dennis Hopper carry this thing. Brando’s performance is overhyped. The Lance ‘acid’ scenes are cringe. And even though Martin Sheen is good in this for the most part, it’s hard to buy into him as a CO. On the other hand one of my favorite opening shots ever. The haze of the smoke grenades create a really hallucinogenic quality to some of the scenes. I need to read the book
Good enough for so many iconic parodies.
>>218958094You gotta pay rent, taxes, bills, mortgage while I get free money from the government every month and all I have to do around my house is shit you could train a monkey to do. Know why? I'm a genius and you're a moron. But I'll still send you that copy of the five hour cut, there's like a few hundred out there.
>>218958231Holy hotta!
>>218950995This scene wasn't in the version I watched
>>218958311>I get free money from the government every monthThat sounds great, what's the secret? Hook me up with free money and I'll happily watch a five-hour version of Apocalypse Now.
>>218958094You can’t do it in segments or take breaks? Or are you just too autistic to have considered those options?
>>218958631What the fuck are you talking about, retard, that's exactly what I said I would and have done in multiple posts in this thread?Who's autistic now?
>>218958683You need to chill out.
>>218958531You're better off that way. Just watch Hearts of Darkness to see what made the editing room floor.
>>218956260>>218950510you're thinking of Full Metal Jacket
>>218948428It's brought down heavily by the druggie hippie photographer who talked a mile a minute. He's like the Gollum of that film: you ffwd every scene he's in. I don't know what's worse: comedians like him or modern woke ones. Neither are funny.
>>218957798Sorry, I couldn't read this meandering banter all the way through. Too many needless words that could have been edited out before posting. Too long and did not read.
>>218964921Feels good to have a sense of humor
>>218948534This is true, and Im saying this as a europoor. Even with todays standards, Apocalypse Now is a very impressive war epic. Cgi has made cinematographers progressively lazy and it shows.>>218950995I dont think its the dialogue; I think its the fact that this part feels like like it belongs to another movie. Its too different from the rest of the movie. I enjoy it though>>218957058Only redux and the final cut feel long. The theatrical feels right paced. I will agree that the movie is a slowburn since the main objective lies in the final part of the movie, but this movie has lots to show before it gets there. Its a journey through the hell of war for the most part, and this is why I feel redux is the best version of this movie, even if its more tiresome.>>218958231How can Xena and Hercules be so based? Here's a question I remember having after I finished the movie. Why there is no fight between Marlon Brando and the main protagonist in the end? Shouldnt be more fulfilling and proper if they had a short skirmish? Im pretty sure there is a symbolic meaning behind Marlon getting slaughtered like a beast out of nowhere, but the movie gave me the idea that the protagonist had grown to respect that man, and would rather kill him in a 1v1 instead of backstabbing him.
>>218955226Worst opinion ever
>>218958231Absolute cinema!
>>218965103If your standards are so low, you think loud, druggie boomers are funny just because they're loud, druggie boomers, no one could convince you otherwise. But if your tastes are that bad, it's not a flex to brag about it.
>>218948428the best
>>218951586>It has great implicationsBeing?
>>218950995I'm a historylet so it went over my head. Can anyone explain?
>>218948428I like it a lot. I'm a big fan of descents into madness and good set design, and this has both. I don't know which version(s) I watched, but I have not seen the French plantation scene. I've been meaning to watch Hearts of Darkness, but it freezes whenever I try playing it on my TV through Plex. It was going to be movie night with my (now ex-)girlfriend because she has a film degree so I thought she'd appreciate it but I could never get it to work. My media library is ~7TB and this is the only movie that does that. Very strange. I guess I'll just watch it on my computer sometime. The statue at the end of the movie makes me want to drop acid and go exploring and die in a Southeast Asian jungle. I don't know how Marlon Brando got away with all the shit he pulled. >h-he's like, the greatest actor ever! uhh sure, whatever. I would have preferred a slightly less good actor who didn't show up to set fat as fuck to play a special forces dude living in the jungle. >>218956482lol
>>218948428One of the best. A rare 9.5/10
>>218957798People like you are why they added new lines to the English dub of Spirited Away.
>>218956482lul
>>218950995Breaks up the pace for some meandering nonsense with a completely different tone. If they were certain that was an essential scene for the movie it should have been much much earlier.
>>218948428>Is this a good movie? It's a great movie, and Copolla's only good movie.
>>218948534i'd be genuinely surprised if any non american posters here have even seen it. I certainly have not and would have guessed it was hot shots based on reading the thread
>>218948428if it's the theatrical release, yeah
>>218969981I rate the Virgin Suicides over it.
>>218948428https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ko97BKLjpdo>Ain't you?Best line in the film
>>218970081LolHow you people manage to not watch apocalipsis now?
>>218948428it's the best
>>218948428>Is this a good movie? No, it's an awesome fucking movieThe real question is a) Theatricalb) Reduxc) Final Cutd) All of the above simultaneously
>>218957798its not four hours you fucking baby, the theatrical cut is less than 2.5
>>218949229You're a pathetic piece shit to me.
>>218953811Classic scenesI like the scene where Lance gets a puppy then Chief gets a spearChief tries to share his spear with Willard but Willard doesn't really like spearsMaybe Willard wanted a puppy too
>>218955226Both are better than Platoon.
