The movie was originally just called "Star Wars" and was later renamed to "Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope" when it did better than expected and sequels were approved as a cash grab. It's a complete story on its own, basically a riff on Dune and the Hero's Journey archetype. Keeping that in mind, ESB and ROTJ feel more like they're just tacking more drama and battles on to the completed story in pursuit of popcorn blockbusters.
