The voice translation rhined their relationship, it was more interesting when it was crude communication. How did the alien understand Grace?

Book Rocky was chilling all alone in Tau Ceti for 46 years before Grace showed up. Bit weird how he never got over his fear of sleeping while unwatched.
>>
>>218972847
What does it look like in the book?
>>

So the ship can be full of Grace.
>>
>>218973209
Sure, they found a real rock monster to star in the film
>>
>>218973175
Grace tuned the translator to speak for him at a frequency above human hearing range, but still audible for Rocky. I just made this up in my head to explain it while watching.

One cute thing to note though is that they aren't using translators in the final scene. They both understand each other's language naturally.

Rocky dresses up for celebrations with Grace, though. Also his species has no eyes, so it doesn't matter much if everyone is naked most of the time.

I know this is bait, but only now is it starting to dawn on me that the vast majority of younger Zoomers and Gen Alphas might actually think all movies use CGI to achieve every single effect. No props, no makeup, no puppets, no miniatures or bigiatures.

It was alright. A bit tropey at parts. The jumpscare in the tunnel was so telegraphed, for instance. None of the jokes were particularly funny. A lot of the potential excitement during action scenes was dulled by my belief that they wouldn't be killing off the only human character. I figured Rocky might die, so I was worried for him.

Science-wise I was thinking the premise was need until Grace said Rocky's species doesn't know about relativity or radiation. I thought "that's complete bullshit" as soon as I heard it. Relativity is one thing, but there's no way the eridians built that light speed ship without learning about radiation at some point. They would need to understand it and be able to detect it to figure out the Petrova line business with their own star.
>>
>>218973581

>>
>>218974683
Didn't JD Vance have to fuck a rock in his youth because he was so poor?
>>
>>218970465
One of my main gripes in an otherwise good movie was Making him speak through that computer permanently. Their relationship was more interesting and engaging when it was broken translation he figured out on the fly through the computer. Once they gave him that voice and had him permanently 'talking' it became too juvenile and 'reddit' for my taste. I also wonder how the rock was able to understand Gosling? Did he just suddenly learn the entire english language in the span of a couple days? Maybe the book explains it better.
>>
>>218972847
>>218973384
They hired the premier puppet designer/operator on earth to make the puppet for him. Yes, in some scene's he was CGI, particularly whenever he was rolling around in his glass ball, but when he is on the skyway bridge and communicating with Grace between the glass that is all puppet work.
>>
>>218974405
Well maybe recently they made a bunch of discoveries about radiation, but for them it's just advanced jargon that they never had to deal with in their history until recent disasters, so they understand a few things about radiation but they don't know that radiation=BIG DEAD or other specific things about it

In the book there's a time skip and Grace is like 60-70 and has been living there a while and learned their language.
>>
>>218978518
Thats not how it works you retard, you made the initial claim, you need to prove it. No one can prove the absence of something. God you are so fucking stupid lmao, no wonder you have to make up shit to argue about on /tv/ lolololol
>>
>>218976088
>language spoiler
In the book, it takes about three chapters for them to develop an understanding. Also Rocky's species has a very different brain, they use "music" to communicate so they have a much easier time processing sounds and they also have essentially perfect memory so he can remember each English word much easier than Grace can remember and understand musical cords. Also for his species, maths is instictual they don't have to compute equations. They really glossed over everything about Rocky's biology and culture in the movie.
>>
>>218973175
Eridians have multiple brains and never forget anything. Their mental computing power is vastly better than humans
>>
>>218979467
it was funny how Rocky was ashamed to let Grace see him eat in the book but in the movie they made it a joke with Rocky being proud of it
>>
>>218976088
in the book the translator goes both way iirc
>>
>>218979559
All of that just for a laugh, they really threw out a lot of dramatic moments, the movie was far too comedic.
>>
>>218972847

>>
>>218973681
That momoa series with the blind people still had interesting fashion, there are so many directions to go with blind fashion and heightened hearing
>>
>>218979467
That's what I figured, they had the perfect opportunity in the film through the video logs for Grace to explain more of Rocky's biology and the way he was able to understand Grace so quickly, suprised they didn't take the opportunity to do so.

>>
>muh aliens gotta speak like humans to be relat-able

uh yeah
>>
>>218982470
Rocky doesn't speak like a human tho. It is literally a translator system Grace develops on a computer in order to understand what the fuck Rocky is saying. Rocky's actual "speech" is basically just musical tunes.

oh, you mean like in a 'meta' sense? it's interesting how they make money despite being vapid, empty visual noise? that's not really that interesting, imo. shit like the transformers movies did the same.
>>
I’m re-reading the novel. I think I found a mistake Andy made. Rocky’s ship hovers at a consistent and exact 217 meters from the Hail Mary when they encounter each other. They still have not made contact. Grace is adjusting the threshold of the proximity sensor to 0.26 kilometers to automatically detect the cylinder Rocky’s ship flings back at him. He then mentions that the distance between ships is 271 meters and anything within 260 meters should set off an alarm. Maybe Andy transposed the two digits and didn’t realize? Maybe there’s an explanation in the coming pages for why the ships are farther apart that I’d forgotten about. He did turn on then turn off centrifuge-mode in the interim, but then Rocky’s ship always mirrors the Hail Mary’s movements.

Avatar is supposed parallel to our real life history so making them more human makes sense. Project Hail Mary is a totally different story.

If the Aliens could get to Tau Ceti, Why could they not take him home to earth?
>>
I liked the part where it had all the jokes during the climactic scene. They just kept fucking going with the jokes and when the moment came that it supposedly became serious, they fucked the entire thing with jokes. I basically kept expecting the rock alien to make a joke at first man's lowest point. I don't know if that's the fault of the book or the two faggot directors, but damn that was lame.

I was watching it and at 20 minutes in Ryan Gosling says "Oh my Science!"
I stormed off the screening, it was packed and I was furious, so I didn't really see where I was going and stepped on some women's feet and she screamed "ouch!" and her husband stood up and was like "what the fuck are you doing?"
I was super angry and just bulldozed through him without looking at his face and also made some kid's popcorn fall on the floor, at that point I just ran to the exit at full speed and started crying right outside the exit door.
I felt like a retard because I just wasted 11$ and made a fool of myself in front of a bunch of people, this movie was the worst experience I had in a cinema in my entire life.

There are very minor differences. They did a good job designing Rocky in the movie. I was sure they’d make the alien some cute Ewok looking thing to go after the family demo
>>
>>218992983
his noises are incredibly cute, and using puppetry for him instead of full CGI makes his small hand movements and shaking adorable and realistic
>>
>>218987836
Either a camrip with petty bad video/audio + embedded ads in several places, or a somewhat better camrip with a giant watermark all over your screen throughout the whole movie. Just watch it in a theater, this is one of the rare cases where it's justified.
>>
>>218978972
It took years to get to Rocky’s home planet
>>
>>218974024
Because it is.
>>
>>218978972
>>218993337
I'm fine with them not aging him up in the final scene. I can suspend my disbelief and pretend that he's ~5 years older (vs the earliest scene on Earth) when he first wakes up, and another ~5 years older by the time he reaches Rocky's planet. It's plausible that he could still look like present day Ryan Gosling, more or less. Meanwhile, 20-30 years have passed on Earth due to time dilation, as shown in the last scene with Stratt.
The math probably isn't accurate, but it works well enough, conceptually.
>>
I like how they show a Xenonite space suit when he visits Rocky's ship, that is some great attention to detail. If this movie was made by lazy hacks, they would've used regular space suit again, ignoring the fact that it was only designed for vacuum, and may not be able to handle the environment on the ship. And this was a movie-exclusive scene, apparently, not from the book.
>>
>>218973309
how did he survive 46 years of bombardment from the debris disk? rock is tough but its not magically impervious to the math behind kinetic bombardment
>>
>>218994190
they do say it's really hot in there, pressurized ass well since rocky starts sublimating on Grace's ship.
>>
>>218994190
I was worried about the radiation, though. Grace's suit would at least give him protection from that. Xenonite doesn't stop radiation and we know Rocky's ship is only shielded near the fuel tanks.

I would have had him wear the space suit under the xenonsuit.
>>
>>218996061
I don't think his regular suit protects him from radiation either, only the Hail Mary does. What does protect him though - is not being exposed to it for too long.

>>
>>218973581
Because we're the only ones who ate the fruit that made us realize that we were naked.
>>
>>218994274
A better question is, since rocky has no resistance to radiation nor even knowledge of it, how is he not dead from 46 years of exposure? Did he spend all that time nestled in the fuel compartment, shielded by astrophage?

You talking about Rocky’s ship? I saw it in the trailer. Yeah, in the book it’s described as being like a convex asymmetric polyhedron. Flat panels everywhere. Looks like a nightmare In the trailer. What’s with all that shit poking out of it? I get the outside has some rails for the robot to navigate, but they wouldn’t/shouldn’t protrude that far from the craft.
