Why does a "trade federation" have a giant robot army?
>>
>>218989681
Because their member planets have a military? Are you retarded?
>>
>>218989681
Both sides were set up by Sheev with the overarching plot of destroying the Jedi and gaining control of the Republic.
>>
Meanwhile in real-life 300 years ago: spice trading companies own half the globe
>>
>>218989681
Hardly the worst plot issue with the movie. It's not that crazy for a major corporation to have a security force. The blockade itself is far fucking dumber and the real narrative problem with The Phantom Menace.
>>
>>218989681
To enforce trade laws. Why does the US have a Navy? To enforce trade laws. Same thing
>>
>>218989681
>Why did a small island nation with a trade empire have the world largest navy
Mysteries abound

I came here to say this.

I know this is a bait thread but the VOC was cool, so was the East India Company and they both had huge armies and navies.
>>
>>218990671
The navy doesn't enforce trade laws, the border agency does that.

To protect trade. If you want to trade, you need to invest in a security system to protect and defend that trade from competitors, rogues, and pirates. Absent of a "Republican Navy" the Trade Federation has a fundamental need to invest in a formidable Space Navy and Droid Army that escort the merchant vessels. Else it will be preyed by rivals, and pirates.
>>
>>218989681
corporations are people goy, they get a 2nd amendment too
>>
It's actually puzzling how the Republic managed to not implode earlier with policies like a lack of an army.
>>
>>218990886
your standing military can detect unauthorized ships coming into your planet. You don't need an entire navy to do that and the only purpose of one is for a blockade or intimidation.
>>
>>218991123

The Republic didn't have a standing military. It is a miracle of bureaucratic inertia and old-money stability that the Republic lasted 25,000 years before the wheels finally came off. The "Ruusan Reformation" (about 1,000 years before the movies) essentially declawed the central government, making it a "soft power" entity that relied on the Jedi and pinky-promises rather than a standing military.

Instead of funding a trillion-credit navy, the Senate used the Jedi Order as a Swiss Army knife for crisis management. edi were "free" (funded by the Order's assets and Republic grants) and highly mobile.Ten thousand Jedi cannot patrol a galaxy of millions of worlds. They were a fire extinguisher, not a fire prevention system. This left the Trade Federation to build their own "hoses."

The Republic operated more like a loose "League of Nations" than a federal government. It stayed together because it didn't actually govern most planets. As long as the core worlds stayed wealthy and the hyperlanes stayed open, the Senate ignored the fact that the Outer Rim was basically controlled by the Hutts and corporate cartels.

The "implosion" was delayed because everyone was making too much money. Even with the Trade Federation’s aggressive expansion, the Core Worlds benefited from the cheap resources flowing in from the rim. The Republic was essentially a "pay-to-play" club; as long as the credits flowed, nobody looked too closely at the private armies being built in the backyard.

The exact moment the stability broke was when the Senate finally tried to assert authority by taxing the Free Trade Zones such as Naboo.
>>
>>218991123
They're an intergalactic business, Anon. Half of known space is controlled by literal cartel slugs.
>>
>>218989681
Why would their leaders be on board the warships? Droids would do the job just fine without them.
>>
Yeah, doesn't Boeing make planes or something?
>>
>>218990671
the US is a sovereign country. the trade federation is a...federation. it's like the WTO having a large standing army.
>>
>>218990625
In star wars they only blockade the hyperspace lanes not the whole planet
>>
>>218990841
>The navy doesn't enforce trade laws, the border agency does that.
LOL

The Navy attacks "rogue nations," defined as anyone who doesn't submit to the central banking cartel.
>>
>>218991282
each planet has their own military to defend itself and can use the republic's military if needed, like NATO. Jedi Knights are just special forces used for special missions and diplomacy.
>>
>>218991459
The Trade Federation identified as a state, you bigot.
>>
>>218991285
the hutts only control a few planets not associated with the republic.
>>
>>218991581
that's what I'm saying. A large navy is only used for intimidation like the US does. You don't need one to enforce trade laws as all you do is just not allow ships to dock if they are unauthorized.
>>
>>218990504
>the EIC mostly used Indian soldiers
>the soldiers used by the Trade Federation are weak, pathetic, cowardly and "the Jedi cut them down like butter"
What did Lucas mean by this?
>>
>>218989681
they run a galaxy wide business and need to protect their interests.
"The Trade Defense Force was created to protect the transports of the Trade Federation. It was created due to the inability of local Planetary Security Forces to protect the Trade Federation's interests"
>>
>>218991459

Historically, some companies did have their own armies. The typical image of cyberpunk with corporations having armies is something that already was a thing in the past. Companies like the East Indian Company were wilder and more evil than portrayed in fiction. Companies routinely put their own flag on some land and declared it theirs. They didn't care about how many atrocities their enforced committed as long as the ships keep sailing. They attacked neutral parties or even kingdoms allied to their own crown because they wanted the shipping lanes (they often bribed kings to make them shut up). They traded with drugs. They exported food until you starved to death. They sent 5 years-old to the factory floor to put these little hands to good use. They incited genocide etc.
>>
>Alderaan
>Chandrila

Did they really need three liberal White women planets?
>>

thanks for such a concise explanation, anon.

>>

>They exported food until you starved to death.
Funniest is when they caused a famine in India because they forced everyone there to grow poppies instead of food so they could make opium to sell to China.
>>
At its peak in 1782, the East Indian Company's private army numbered around 260,000 men, twice the size of the actual British Army at the time. They had the legal right to mint their own money, build forts, enact laws, and declare war. They were essentially a "state within a state."
>>

as opposed to the irl east india trading company which took no part in military action ever

The world population in 1600 was like 700 million people. Your pic says the trading company was worth 8 trillion dollars, more than all the tech companies combined. Whoever made that was obviously a redditor who known nothing about finances and just made up a random number to justify muh evil capitalism.
>>
>>218989681
Why did east india company have an army? why did hanseatic league have an army?
>>
>>218993817

It accounts for nearly 400 years of inflation and economic shifts.
>>
>>218991119
Might’ve had something to do with having an order of clairvoyant space wizards running around deescalating issues before they could even be issues.

But hey, the first lines of tpm establish the clairvoyant space wizards don’t actually use their powers except to fight and run.

If The dutch east india company was still in existence its market cap would be the same as those companies today (adjusted for inflation)i think,
Same way Rockefeller is the richest person in history because he owned all the oil in the early 1900's
>>

Why not? Ever heard of the British Empire and the East India Company?
>>

The military-coinage-slavery complex. This was already described explicitly in the Arthashastra, a political guidebook written by Minister Kautilya for the Mauryan dynasty. Coins and markes sprung up, above all, to feed the machinery of WAR. "The treasury is based upon mining, the army upon the treasury; he who has the army and the treasury may conquer the Earth. "
>>
>>218991637
They own multiple galaxies. “Huttspace” is a real thing and the republic/separatists bashed heads to gain access to it repeatedly.
>>
>>218994412
There’s only one galaxy in Star Wars.
>>
>>218989681

interesting fact: we can only see crewed aats in the phantom menace. this is because it's the earliest stage of the war, so the trade federation, that produced weapons and equipment for different customers, used whatever it had in stock
by attack of the clones they completely switched their production for the war effort, making tanks completely autonomous without needing a droid crew
lucas of course shat all over this by adding crewed aats in the cartoon
>>
>>218991487
Then they wouldn't have blockaded the entire planet dumbass.
>>
>>218994967
Now this is some advanced lore autism
>>
>>218995935
They didnt?

They have to run the blockade to make it to the hyperspace lane dumber ass.
>>
>>218994967
Lucas was right. It's far cooler and more fun to have droids crewing armored vehicles rather than a tank itself be a droid. That's boring. People want droids in recognizable, relatable forms such as humanoid. They can speak to them, be similar size, walk with them through hallways, etc. Then that droid can go take its directions and perform tasks elsewhere. You can't talk with a giant tank droid in your spaceship. It just hangs out in the cargo bay or out on the field. It's way cooler seeing big transports deploy thousands of terminator like bots that walk towards the gungans shooting while the tanks blast away from afar
>>
>>218994967
i always wondered why the the tanks needed droids to pilot. also why they need binoculars. i know lucas prob added it in because it reminds him of ww2 films where they did it but still.
>>
>>219000908
>You can't talk with a giant tank droid in your spaceship.
Why not? All the droids were remotely turned on from it
