For the majority of it, it's pretending to be like any other teenage harem show where they pilot mecha and defeat the new kaiju of the week. They slowly tease out that the mystery with scenes and hints that there's something not right with the Evas like when it goes berserk and such. Still, you're right that I couldn't see anyone else coming up with a lot of the stuff in NGE other than the japanese and that's what I like about it. The weirdness is refreshing
