why do space ships need wings
>>219031869Attachment points for the lasers
>>219031869something something wookiepedia the lasers are so powerful they need to be meters away from the engine/cockpit atmospheric flight
>>219031893can't you put those anywhere
>>219031869If they didn't have wings, you'd never have made this thread. So, you just proved them right in their choice
>>219031869heat dissipation
>>219031934Wider profile = wider firing lineNarrower profile = narrower target
So they can fly in air too. They're flying in air on the very picture you posted.
>>219031869They operate in atmospheres too. Just saw an X-Wing at the Yavin base in an episode of Andor I watched a couple days ago.
>>219031982narrower is just better then, you're more likely to hit the enemy hull
>>219031869because it looks cool
>>219031959If there was never a big bang the universe wouldn't exist. The sheer potentiality of existence creates its instantiation. Legitimate and based answer.
>>219031869your picture shows them flying through atmosphere. how fucking dumb are you?
>>219031869This is a space ship and it has wings
>>219032114The X-wing's wings dont help it at all in an atmosphere, wings have to have curvature to generate lift.
>>219032014B-but so can TIE fighters, and they don't have wings. Those are canonically solar panels, ackchyually.
not wings they are s foils
>>219031869They're s-foils
>X-wings>shaped like an X>S-foils>no S shaperetard???
>>219031869Their called wings. Even the A wings
>>219031869laser canon in the middle would be more effective
>>219032119Exactly, this is why everyone hunts ducks with .22 long rifle and not shotguns...oh wait
>>219031869How else are they supposed to lock S-foils into attack position?
>>219031869to make the toy designs legally distinct.
>>219034517ok redneck
i am one with the force and the force is with me
>>219037255DEI ESLs have been writing star wars scripts for a decade now
>>219037346and what race are you?
>>219032014Repulsor lift tech is so cheep and ubiquitous in the Star Wars universe that even a dirt poor hillbilly on a backwater planet can have a speeder. In a situation like this, there is no need for wings.
>>219031869In atmosphere operation
>>219031869Viper > X-wing
>>219031869Sometimes they are not in space.
>>219039223Nice A wing, FAGGOT
>>219031869Flight mostly
>>219039223keep coping winglet
>>219039223
they fly in atmosphere too
i fucking love spaceships with wings, bros
>>219032621Who says they have as much mobility? If TIEs win in the air it's due to sheer numbers.
sex with gonk
>>219031869They were used in space Vietnam too
Will Star Wars ever be cool again?
To fly
>>219031869star wars movies made all of their props out of random junk and hardware. the boba fett ship was a lamp. the X wing was probably just some piece of shit that they glued together
>>219031869https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXAxZmrAJqI
>>219039223>>219039762BSG had best ship designs of any 21st century sci fi media Cylon Basestars are retarded though
>>219044904yeah
>>219034517>ducks in space>with wings!
>>219032338Because it glides, dumbo.
>>219031982If you played war thunder (don't do it) you'd know that center mounted guns are much mire accurate than wing mounted
>>219032621They also function as wings.
>>219032338It's barly a spaceship. It was too fat and slow and could only go to low orbit. Space shuttle? More like high altitude city bus.
>>219032395Bernoulli's Principle is the biggest misunderstanding in aviation physics and that drawing doesn't even accurately represent it. The air coming off the back of the airfoil is directed downward, it does not continue in a straight path as shown. That's how the lift is created. The negligible pressure differential is a red herring and equal transit is a fallacy easily demonstrated as false with wind tunnel demonstrations. That same airfoil still works upside down with a higher angle of attack, it's just less efficient. Flat wings work too but with a steeper efficiency loss. The flattened teardrop is the standard because it is the best way produce sufficient downforce to generate lift at cruising speed with minimal drag. X-wings are fictional spacecraft that can hover indefinitely so it doesn't need wings that generate lift.
Why do all big space ships have bridges that prominently jut out with windows instead of sticking the command center deep within the ship and have a gorillion cameras feeding full surround view on wall-size monitors
>>219047937>Space shuttle? More like high altitude city bus.
>>219048306Most are designed with boats as the contemporary instead of submarines. Our monkey brains will still want to be able to see when complex systems fail.
>>219044904>>219045196Cantwell mentioned one of the inspirations for the X-Wing was a dart.
>>219044904wasn't the millennium falcon based on a burger or something.
>>219042159Fallen Order was pretty cool. I did not play the sequel.
>>219039223For me? It's Based Rogers' Thunderfighter
It's for stability rockets don't need wings for lift but they still have tail fins
>>219031869Those flat wings on TIE fighters are actually solar panels. Because you know... in space you sure want to have those extra 3 Kilowatts of energy.
>>219031869It looks cooler on a toy store shelf.
>>219044904It's pointless to try to explain sci-fi designs that are intentionally made to look otherworldly to the point of being unexplainable. Unless as some sort of thought exercise or mental game. But getting autistically bent out of shape over it or coming up with obviously contrived explanations (wookiepedia & co) is just asinine.
>>219050502To be clear, I mean conventional explanations, using physics etc. when those were obviously of little to no concern for anyone responsible for building the world of Star Wars. Fantastical explanations are a different matter, but those are usually terribly unimaginative, so what's the fucking point.
>>219039943looks like a frog with a bad haircut
>>219039223>>219039762agree>>219042159>incredibly cliche and try hard line>coolLame
>>219031869real spaceships have wings
>>219031869> pic of space ship in atmosphere.> questions the need for wings.some people really do this
>>219031869Space radiators.
>>219031869Radiators.
>>219054618That's cgi
>>219031869to put guns and engines on them, can't you see?
>>219032395The engines and thrusters are powerful and efficient enough that they don't need lift from the wings. The wings are for stability and steering in atmospheric flight. This is partly why we have wings on airplanes today: fuel is expensive and heavy, so with wings generating lift then the engines can be dedicated to pushing the aircraft forward rather than upward. Otherwise, we could just use super powered helicopters and quadcopters for air all travel.
>>219039223>>219039762Why do they name their ships after animals and letters rather than things in their galaxy, like this thing?
>>219032621everyone knows that tie fighters have worse atmospheric flight profiles than chad-wings
>>219031869it looks like an X when u fly at the enemy which is badass because the letter X is cool
For me, it's the Y-Wing
>>219039943I despise this Klingon ship compared to the ships in Star Trek TMP. There's no sense of scale and the green color scheme is awkward. https://youtu.be/HCha8W5rQz0I get that they wanted them to look recognizably alien though
>>219031869You want a flying dildo?
>>219056602Battlestar Galactica happens in Earth galaxy afaik
>>219057179>>219056602The better question is why are Starwars ships named after the english alphabet, when english isn't even a language that exists in that universe
>>219057645They clearly speak in english in the films
For me its the ARC-170
>>219057798>isn't shaped like a 170 degree arc
I always liked the ships from the Sylpheed games. Someone should make a movie or series about them, but I don't know what it would be about, becuase I never had any idea wtf was going on in those games, but they were fun and looked cool
>>219035568You got BTFO
>>219044996i wouldn't go that far, but they definitely had some of the best designskinda want to rewatch it now
>>219056979based
>>219057034It was originally supposed to be a Romulan ship before it was changed to klingon halfway through production.
I worked at ILM in 1976. When they were building the X-wing models, I stood in the middle of the studio and raised my hand, because I was baffled. I said, "Why do these ships need wings? They fly in space. Also the pilots should be wearing space suits". One of the ILM guys said from behind me "Shut the fuck up and leave". I had to leave and I missed out on working on the rest of the Star Wars films and any residuals from them. I'm still mad.
>>219061273I was there and I remember you, I was just about to agree with you when that ILM guy said what he said. Crazy thing is he was just another guy working there and he didn't have any power to fire you. We kept waiting for you to show up back at work, but you never did. Shame that you missed out on all that money, I live in a castle now.
It's dogfighting in space. Dam Busters influence.
>>219031869Cuz when it enters planetary atmosphere, you dummy
>>219034454That's where the torpedo launchers are, you silly goose.
>>219057798is this from something or is it AI slop, I can't tell anymore
>>219063444yes
>>219057727They don't. They speak Galactic Basic, and use the Aurebesh alphabet. So I have to ask again... Why are they naming ships after english alphabet characters
>>219039223Time to take this kid back to school.
>>219031869They don't "need" wings not eve in star wars, It hosts both winged and non winged designs. If you want the short answer, "because it looks cool." It is a good visual shorthand so the audience can tell who is who even in the most chaotic of space battle scenes. If you want a plausible in universe reason than here's an easy one. While spinal mounted weapons offer a tighter and more accurate field of fire, a dogfight in atmosphere or space is going to take place at high speed over considerable distances. spreading your weapons out with either a degree of gimbleing control or even a fixed convergence point allows you to saturate an area that your target is moving into. When a single hit from any of the 4 cannons on the X-wing is capable of crippling or destroying a regular Tie fighter, ( that like to attack in massed formation swarms) spreading out your shots can be more advantageous than having them all aligned with the center axis of the ship. Also the extra surface area can be used to house cooling for the weapons which allows the fighter to equip more powerful cannons and fire them faster.
