why do space ships need wings

something something wookiepedia the lasers are so powerful they need to be meters away from the engine/cockpit atmospheric flight
>>
>>219031893
can't you put those anywhere

If they didn't have wings, you'd never have made this thread. So, you just proved them right in their choice

Wider profile = wider firing line

Narrower profile = narrower target
>>
So they can fly in air too. They're flying in air on the very picture you posted.
>>
>>219031869
They operate in atmospheres too. Just saw an X-Wing at the Yavin base in an episode of Andor I watched a couple days ago.
>>
>>219031982
narrower is just better then, you're more likely to hit the enemy hull
>>

If there was never a big bang the universe wouldn't exist. The sheer potentiality of existence creates its instantiation. Legitimate and based answer.

Repulsor lift tech is so cheep and ubiquitous in the Star Wars universe that even a dirt poor hillbilly on a backwater planet can have a speeder.

In a situation like this, there is no need for wings.

It's barly a spaceship. It was too fat and slow and could only go to low orbit. Space shuttle? More like high altitude city bus.
>>
>>219032395
Bernoulli's Principle is the biggest misunderstanding in aviation physics and that drawing doesn't even accurately represent it. The air coming off the back of the airfoil is directed downward, it does not continue in a straight path as shown. That's how the lift is created. The negligible pressure differential is a red herring and equal transit is a fallacy easily demonstrated as false with wind tunnel demonstrations. That same airfoil still works upside down with a higher angle of attack, it's just less efficient. Flat wings work too but with a steeper efficiency loss. The flattened teardrop is the standard because it is the best way produce sufficient downforce to generate lift at cruising speed with minimal drag. X-wings are fictional spacecraft that can hover indefinitely so it doesn't need wings that generate lift.
>>
Why do all big space ships have bridges that prominently jut out with windows instead of sticking the command center deep within the ship and have a gorillion cameras feeding full surround view on wall-size monitors

Most are designed with boats as the contemporary instead of submarines. Our monkey brains will still want to be able to see when complex systems fail.

Those flat wings on TIE fighters are actually solar panels. Because you know... in space you sure want to have those extra 3 Kilowatts of energy.

It's pointless to try to explain sci-fi designs that are intentionally made to look otherworldly to the point of being unexplainable. Unless as some sort of thought exercise or mental game. But getting autistically bent out of shape over it or coming up with obviously contrived explanations (wookiepedia & co) is just asinine.
>>
>>219050502
To be clear, I mean conventional explanations, using physics etc. when those were obviously of little to no concern for anyone responsible for building the world of Star Wars. Fantastical explanations are a different matter, but those are usually terribly unimaginative, so what's the fucking point.

>>
>>219032395
The engines and thrusters are powerful and efficient enough that they don't need lift from the wings. The wings are for stability and steering in atmospheric flight.
This is partly why we have wings on airplanes today: fuel is expensive and heavy, so with wings generating lift then the engines can be dedicated to pushing the aircraft forward rather than upward. Otherwise, we could just use super powered helicopters and quadcopters for air all travel.

I always liked the ships from the Sylpheed games. Someone should make a movie or series about them, but I don't know what it would be about, becuase I never had any idea wtf was going on in those games, but they were fun and looked cool

I worked at ILM in 1976. When they were building the X-wing models, I stood in the middle of the studio and raised my hand, because I was baffled. I said, "Why do these ships need wings? They fly in space. Also the pilots should be wearing space suits". One of the ILM guys said from behind me "Shut the fuck up and leave". I had to leave and I missed out on working on the rest of the Star Wars films and any residuals from them. I'm still mad.
>>
>>219061273
I was there and I remember you, I was just about to agree with you when that ILM guy said what he said. Crazy thing is he was just another guy working there and he didn't have any power to fire you. We kept waiting for you to show up back at work, but you never did. Shame that you missed out on all that money, I live in a castle now.

They don't "need" wings not eve in star wars, It hosts both winged and non winged designs.

If you want the short answer, "because it looks cool." It is a good visual shorthand so the audience can tell who is who even in the most chaotic of space battle scenes.

If you want a plausible in universe reason than here's an easy one. While spinal mounted weapons offer a tighter and more accurate field of fire, a dogfight in atmosphere or space is going to take place at high speed over considerable distances. spreading your weapons out with either a degree of gimbleing control or even a fixed convergence point allows you to saturate an area that your target is moving into. When a single hit from any of the 4 cannons on the X-wing is capable of crippling or destroying a regular Tie fighter, ( that like to attack in massed formation swarms) spreading out your shots can be more advantageous than having them all aligned with the center axis of the ship.

Also the extra surface area can be used to house cooling for the weapons which allows the fighter to equip more powerful cannons and fire them faster.
