The show touches on nature/nurture a lot but i don't know if ti gives a definitive answer.

Of course anybody with half a brain knows nature is like 60 to 70% of who people are at least, nurture influences who we become but in a different way depending of our nature, for example in Tony's place AJ would have probably never gone into the mob, he didn't have it in him.

Tony was a "sociopath" which in my opinion is just a fancy label that psychiatry has for people who are naturally less "empathetic" or feel less guilt than others, not something tangible you can see on a brain scan and can conclude 100% unlike an actual physical illness.

I understand him, while blaming others or our parents for how we are is pointless, since the choice is always ours, by the time he started wondering "am i a "bad" guy" it was too late he took an oath even if he decided to leave the Mob his life would be in danger from that day on so the whole show is about him trying to deal with who he is in his Mob life and who he is with his family even if those two personas bleed into each other constantly.

Tony was a monster only in the same way anybody who's morals or lack thereof go against what Western Civilization considers "good" aka Slave Morality as Nietzsche would say.

He was smart and had good instincts but a bad temper that probably caused his demise in the end, i empathize with him because i too have some of those antisocial personality traits, the episode when he tries to rationalize killing Christopher as something for "the greater good" hit too close to home to how i reacted privately when i found out my addict brother committed suicide, i too felt a sense of relief that i couldn't disclose due to all the problems he was causing only i recognize that deep down i was glad for my own personal "selfish" reasons because it was convenient to me that he was no longer causing problems to me or my family.

He basically embodies the 7 deadly sins. I guess the only way you wouldn't categorize him as a monster is if you reserve the term for those that perpetuate suffering for their own pure enjoyment like serial killers/rapists/child molesters.

His only somewhat redeeming quality is that he loved his daughter but even then that's the bare minimum for a father
