I know, it was "produced" by Kim Il Sung.

HJ: I saw the film version of the The Dresser last night. At one point, Wolfit or Sir, says, “Lear is the greatest tragic part of all time.”
OW: Of course. The Dresser is a parody of Lear. The dresser is the fool—
HJ: Oh, my God. You know, I never even got that. I feel stupid.
OW: It’s a little clumsy, but that’s what it is. The writer, Harwood, is trying to say a lot more than he needed to say to make a very good vehicle play. You mustn’t look too closely at it. But that’s what it is.
HJ: Albert Finney is magnificent.
OW: Stick a dagger in me! I tried so hard to get the rights to that play. You’ve ruined my lunch.

HJ: Did the French know about Kane?
OW: [..]The first thing they heard about it was the violent attack by Jean-Paul Sartre. Wrote a long piece, forty thousand words on it or something.
HJ: Well, maybe it politically offended him in some way.
OW: No. I think it was because, basically, Kane is a comedy.
HJ: It is?
OW: Sure. In the classic sense of the word. Not a fall-in-the-aisles laughing comedy, but because the tragic trappings are parodied.
HJ: I never thought of Kane as a comedy. It’s profoundly moving.
OW: It’s moving, but so can comedies be moving. There is a slight camp to all the great Xanadu business. And Sartre, who has no sense of humor, couldn’t react to it at all.

Notihng will ever be sadder for me than Deer Hunter and The Wind Rises for very similar and very different reasons. Waltz With Bashir is close though, especially the ending where they show a Palestinian mother weeping over a literal street of corpses piled chest-high.
>Most tragic filmmaking stories?
Twilight Zone (1983)
>Most tragic film actor?
I don't think anyone in any film industry has ever been raped and abused in totality as much as Judy Garland.
>Most tragic film director?
Cimino. It was criminal what the studios did to Heaven's Gate all in order to crush New Hollywood and put creative control back in the hands of the suits and producers. Arguably the origin of why the American film industry is so shit today.

It all depends on the momentum the person had built in life. An early death can also take aura, take the soul and reshape it after aeons in hell, for utilization in material form, like a stone. The consciousness is gone forever in those cases.

I just watched Minari (2020). Beautiful movie. Not that it matters, I'm waffling over whether to give it a 9/10 or 10/10. There really are no flaws and the scale is not wide, but runs miles deep.

Have any other anons seen it? Were you similarly moved? The grandma in particular was such a bright light, but everyone played their roles very well. I'm extremely satisfied with the ending, too, which is always tough to stick.

I'm glad you also loved it, anon. I logged it as a 10/10. It deserves it. I'm really glad it leaned into faith as well. The scenes where the farmhand trudges along the road were particularly powerful, as was the water diviner (which also showed that the family stayed together, thankfully).

I saw a cut of Leila Marrakchi's film. Classic Cannes bait: One-note 'heavy social issue' drama of North African women in Europe. Lots of yelling, tears. Acting was ok. Not enough nuance. this chair throw in L'Amour d'une femme stuck out to me as pretty brutal looking when I watched it and it turns out Jean Grémillon had the actor rehearse with a fake padded stool and then replaced it with a real one last second and just let him take it full force lol

He's a hack. His recipe is simply to go 90% on improvisation. It's lazy as hell, which is why he produces like two movies per year. I saw 2 of his movies and found the improvised dialogue to be boring and repetitive. Agreed with a few of the bullets.
