I don't get it. No really, I don't get it.

A guy shows off how hard he can swim. "Look guiz I can swim a lot!" He swims and swims. And then swims some more. But then, at the end - a big revelation. "Boo hoo the door to my house is locked. I'm outdoors in a Speedo and to top it off it's beginning to rain!"

How did this win Oscar for best swimming?

he's literally me, and i don't post that lightly

...I swim.
>>
The average zoomer completely mogs this guy in height, frame, and definition.

Your life, best not live it

I love this movie so much. Its like 6 short films in one each representing a piece of a man's life and inevitable descent. The first might be my favorite because the way he talks about swimming and the energy it gave him in his youth with his old friends reactions is magic. That public pool one is traumatic

except not remotely true, Burt was 6'1 for one and he had the natural fit body from back when Boomers had good health just from their naturally physical lives
>>

Ya, it's a pretty odd movie. The closest explanation I can come up with is:
> he lived his life as a man-whore pool boy; and now that he's getting older, he's realized that everyone else has moved on

This wasn’t considered a dark depressing movie in the 60s? Watching this ruined my day

Many such cases.

you can never outswim you're own self..

>, I don't get it.

The movie is about a 50 something man who is experiencing a mid life crisis. Something has h append in his career and he no longer makes a lot of money. They never explain exactly what but its hinted at in the dialog. He is no longer a part of the affluent suburban types who own big houses with swimming pools in the east. With his money gone his daughters and wife abandon him and he looses his house and therefore his suburban American dream. He is too old to recover so this is the end of the line.

No, that's just wrong. His life fell apart but he was just too selfish to see it. His little swimming challenge was just a way to cope and forget about his miserable life but the traumatic truth hit him once he got back home.

Moral of the story is;

Do not try to dump your mistress at the best restaurant infront of all your socialite friends

You have to be 40+ to get this movie. He like if Uncle Rico had lived in a big mansion with his sweetheart and then fucked it all up.
>>
almost every pool he goes into is a different stage of his life. at the beginning of the movie everyone is happy to see him the way adults all drop what they're doing to treat children well. but then as time goes on other people grow up and their responsibilities change but he stays the same, thinking selfishly and wondering why people aren't dropping everything to give him a hug just for bellyflopping into their lives. he turns out to have been a bad father and husband and friend.

It’s based on A John Cheever short story. If you ever read anything by him in in English lit class, you know he is exceedingly depressing.
>>
I watched it on tv in my late teens on a day off and thought it was good. It's very hypnotising in a strange way.

literal blonde perfection. They don't make them like this anymore

It's about denial. We are so focused on what's ahead of us we rarely see the life we've left behind us. He discovers he's hurt some people, become a pariah in his community, and has lost everything. It's a sobering film and there have been homages to it After Hours, Falling Down, etc.
