Why does he become an engineering genius overnight?
>>219089725He doesn't, he was an underachiever until DS9
>>219089725its the berman star trek waygeordiobrienromtorres
>>219089725Engineering is like that, you suck for a long time and then suddenly it just clicks. An ounce of experience is worth a pound of talent.
>>219089725I assume someone complained that it wasn't pc having a mick be bloody useless.
>>219089725Just shows what could have happened if they let him out of the transporter room sooner.
>>219089725He wasn't even an officer and went under the radar
A guy that's nothing special on the flagship is gonna look pretty spectacular on a remote outpost of no significance.
>>219089725He wasn't a genius he was a fucking hack who got exiled beyond the borders of the federation after his scheme to normalize his pedophilia blew up in his face after Captain Picard was also turned into a child during a transporter "accident".
>>219090850i was gonna say "what about an autist like barclay" but even he was assigned to some high level stuff in VOY then got shit done. though he still had to go through an arc there
>>219089854To be fair Miles probably had more practical experience than the whole crew put together (aside from Data, obviously) despite not being an officer.
>>219089725He was in charge of the transporters on the Federation flagship, makes sense that he has a plethora of skills. He could easily have done Geordi's job but got the transporter chief gig because he isn't an officer.
>>219089725Deep Space 9 was meant to be a backwards shithole where third rate starfleet officers go when their career is over or they want to have a low effort job. He only looks like a genius compared to his new peers. On the flagship of the Federation he was just good enough to manage a transporter room.
>>219089725he quit drinking
>>219093030i feel like he knowingly took a job below his skill level just for the prestige of the gigprobably a lot of competition to get assigned to the enterprise, so he took what he could get
>>219089725He was chief of operations responsible for fixing inferior cardassian tech on the frontier after decades of service on the flagship of the fleet. He didn't know everything, he didn't even know what self sealing stem bolts were
>>219089725Kek how is he not even a fucking officer and in charge of Operations? Can't some fresh out of the academy officer come on board and just start ordering him around because they already outrank him?
>>219093700>Cloverleaf>Stop drinking >Ever ever ever
hypothetically speaking if somebody is in their 30s and has been a big Sci Fi fan their whole life (Stargate SG1, Star Wars, Fringe, Black Mirror etc) but has never seen a single episode of Star Trek what series would you recommend? I've heard DS9 or the original series are the best. I don't mind watching outdated effects/costumes btw I like plenty of old films from the 60s
>>219094515Chronological order but if TOS is too old school then just start with TNG.But TOS is god tier even though it's visuals are dated. Plus it will set you up for the movies because the TOS movies are the best.
>>219094290Yes, that's how military organizations work (and yes, Starfleet is one)But if some fresh Ensign starts ordering around a Senior Chief like a fuckwad, the enlisted men are going to goldbrick and make the Ensign's time terribleThere are literal episodes about this
>>219094515Either TOS or TNGDefinitely do TNG before DS9 since the tone of DS9 is set up as a counterpoint to TNG/TOS
>>219094515Watch in this order>original trekThe third series goes to shit though>tng the next generationtimeless classic>ds9The first series isn't the best but gets way better if you stick with it>voyagerSome don't like it but I think it's underrated.Don't bother with the rest
>>219089725He always was. It's just that he was posted on the flagship of the Federation, where everyone is the best of the best all of Starfleet has to offer (and Barclay). Compared to the monstrous genius of people like Geordie and Data, all Miles was fit for was transporting people up and down. But compared to the average person, he was smart enough to be chief engineer of an alien space station and an academy teacher after that.
>>219094515The Original Series, The Next Generation, and Deep Space Nine all share the crown for the best. But the Original Series requires a certain mindset and sense of taste in order to enjoy it. If you go into it with the wrong expectations then you might not enjoy it. Try this episode to find out how you like it.Star Trek TOS S01E25 - The Devil in the Darkhttps://mega.nz/file/P3IEjZzD#bMRVojGaljINtI6uEGPA8r-IoiZgyqjptFO16auwVYkFor TNG and DS9, the early seasons (TNG especially) have a different writing style and feeling than the later seasons, and it's usually the later seasons that people are praising. If you jump into episode #1 of TNG, then you might not see what people are praising. Try this later season episode and see if it appeals to you.Star Trek TNG S05E02 - Darmokhttps://mega.nz/file/b6hFBTLJ#CKsAhCsNVloXv-NpsDwr82xT8U_YjOCZiA8nT6rayGs
>>219094515Or maybe just watch a handful of the TOS episodes to get familiar with it before jumping to the TOS movies which are all good except ST:V The Final Frontier. That one is just bad there's no way to spin it. Maybe watch the first four TOS movies before jumping to TNG as a shortcut from having to watch the entire run of TOS if it's too much. Because TNG is the peak of the entire franchise before or after. But it's truly if you have context from TOS before going in because the series is a sequel to TOS after all.
>>219094621>>219094675>>219094747Alright I think I'll start with the original. It'll be nice to see some comfy campy sci fi. Nothings really come close to scratching the SG1 itch for me since it aired. Andromeda had its moments
>>219094772>>219094797I appreciate the advice but I think I'll just download season 1 of TOS and go from there. Not sure if I'll like it but it'll be fun to give it a try
>>219094515I'd say try TOS, but if it is too campy for you move on to TNG. Just watch the shows in the order in which they came out (and stop after Enterprise). Most Trek shows have bad first seasons for some reason, especially TNG. So don't give up too early, they do get better. The only exception is TOS, which is good in season 1 and 2 and then has a horrible season 3.
>>219089725>>219094290stop pretending you have any fucking clue about Trek or real life to ask even the dumbest questionsyour Klutzman Trek is a failure and so are you
>>219094629What are some episodes where that happens? I remember there was one in Battlestar Galactica but I don't remember any Star Trek episodes like that.
>>219089725He was trusted to help Data and Beverly disconnect Picard from the collective, behind the scenes this was because LeVar was in hospital when they were filming but it set a precedent that he could do more than energise
>>219095573That is great and it sums it all up.
>>219094290>>219094629Whats the difference between a chief and an officer in starfleet. why isnt everyone an officer?
>>219098164Get a college degree at Starfleet Academy before you start working - officer.Go straight to working without getting a degree first - enlisted.
>>219094515TNG
>>219098164They are low ranking specialists who didn't go to Starfleet Academy (4 year degree). Basically it's easier to get in, but you can't rise that much in rank. Even if you are the most experienced person in the room, some noob officers will be above you in rank.
>>219089725His hatred of spoon heads drove him to greatness
>>219098665>who didn't go to Starfleet AcademyWhen Wesley was going through the Academy he had to do alot of shit that Im sure most of Starfleet officers couldnt even do. Especially that math section wheres hes on the computer. It was also weird that while he was with several others in the class, they were told only 1 of them would be allowed to join Starfleet Academy. Its like why though. Is Starfleet full?
>>219098781>It was also weird that while he was with several others in the class, they were told only 1 of them would be allowed to join Starfleet Academy. Its like why though. Is Starfleet full?Early TNG isn't canon. You might as well ask why the Klingons aren't in the Federation even though early TNG said they are.
>>219096819I forget specifically, the only one I remember clearly is where Troi is the ranking officer and Miles doesn't put himself in charge. Ensign Ro is taking orders from Troi even though she has no fucking clue how to lead or how anything works. Miles suggests courses of action but has to follow their commands
>>219098781I think he was doing some kind of elite program where teenagers can join who are normally too young for the Academy. But yeah it was kind of nonsensical. Most officers we see don't appear to be that competent. On the other hand elite high schools also exist in real life.
>>219094747>The first series isn't the best but gets way better if you stick with itDS9 is good right off the bat. S1 had Duet. It took them a while to figure out how to direct Avery Brooks and there's some random shit episodes, but every season of star trek ever made has a handful of shit episodes.
>>219094515Watch TNG and if an episode sucks just skip it.
>>219089725>loses his rank>becomes a geniusreally makes you think
>>219090953idk, turning your wife into a 12 year old is pretty genius
>>219099532He fucked up by transforming Picard too. Nobody gave a shit about Ro and Guinan was happy about it.
